I've enjoyed it. I really truly am not that interested in soccer normally but with all the hype the last few weeks not only with the social media stuff but some of the games have actually been very interesting. I just don't understand some of the rules. The clock going up is still weird to me.

So, El Tri still have not won a Round of 16 game since 1986 (can't really just say they finally won a knockout game since this is the first Mundial with a Round of 32). Mexican fans should be extremely disappointed given they were at the Azteca and had a man advantage for most of the 2nd half and injury time and couldn't even force extra time.

This seems a bit suspicious. Fotmob says Mexico had 1.49 xG in the 2nd half, so roughly 0.7 non-pen xG. Did nearly all that really happen before the red card? Doubtful.

The clock goes up because it's not over at 45' or 90'. That's where stoppage time comes in. If you start at 45 and count down to 0:00 then it looks like it's over. Unless it's a pro game there isn't even a visible clock. It's all on the Referee's watch.

Counting down to 0:00 is exactly how HS soccer works. The rules there do stop the clock for certain things (cards, injuries needing trainers, goals) and when it hits 0:00 the half or game is over. There is no stoppage in HS soccer.

Record by confederation through the first four Round of 16 games:

UEFA: 3-0
CAF: 1-0
CONCACAF: 0-2
CONMEBOL: 0-2

UEFA loses twice tomorrow.

These round-of-16 matches haven't been kind to host teams.

Story Time/My Azteca Experience

Way back in the day (December '93), I went on a high school-organized trip to Mexico City. On a free evening, we realized Cruz Azul was playing at Azteca. So being a bunch of somewhat-responsible teenage guys (mostly juniors and seniors), we decided to go to the game. We managed to get there easily enough, via the subway, and got to the stadium.

Problem is, the ticket booths were closed when we got there. While we were trying to figure out what to do, a security guard of some sort called us over to a gate and told us he'd get us in for (I think) 20 pesos each. We gladly paid, he got us in, and told us to go sit anywhere we wanted to on the upper level. We found some seats, then the game started up. Halftime hit, people left to get concessions and stuff, and then after a while, we realized nobody was coming back (fans, teams, everyone). Then it hit us...it was halftime when we got there, which is why the ticket booths were closed, and some dude got us in for a few bucks each to watch half a game. No problem, it was fun and a cool story.

We made our way back to the subway to head back to the hotel. Most of us were gringos, but we did have one Mexican classmate with us. Anyway, some local fans started talking ****, telling him they were sorry that he was "stuck with a bunch of white *******." One of my friends didn't know Spanish but knew context clues, and started getting really pissed off. Our Mexican classmate somehow managed to mediate everything, and calmed down both sides, but they were still laughing as we walked off.

Made it back to the hotel with no problem, and realized how lucky we may have actually been.

And that's my Azteca Experience. To paraphrase the Iron Shiek and his famous tweet about Monday, "**** the Azteca."

It's easy for Mexicans to self-proclaim themselves as amazing hosts. I'm sure the European tourists loved visiting DF, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Those are great places to visit. And I'm sure, for example, the Moroccan team and fans loved having thousands of extra fans at the expense of the Dutch (not sure why or how the Mexicans chose who they were going to overwhelmingly support in neutral matches). …but what they did to England's hotel, bus, etc, the "chants" that are usually not allowed. I don't see how they can be so confident in self-awarding themselves.
