Cat had this monster in his mouth when I got home, about 12-15" long. It had an attitude like I have never seen before, typically they back down but this one was aggressive as heck.

Well...in his defense, he had just been picked up by what he undoubtedly believed was a huge bobcat in the driveway!

You'd be aggressive too after being pried from the jaws of certain death

What is this? I found him laying out dead like this in a field near my home just outside Cody WY one morning a couple of weeks ago. It had been close to zero that morning. Did it get caught above ground and freeze? About 3 ft long. A bull snake?

I'm going to try and guess before I look it up. Sort of a test to see how much I've learned from this thread.

I'm going Gopher Snake. Final answer

It is probably what people would refer to as a bullsnake, but you are not wrong. Bullsnakes and gopher snakes are subspecies of the same species of snake (Pituophis catenifer).

Technically they are gopher snakes but lots of people call them bull snakes.

These pics are a couple months old. I never posted them before because I thought I'd get better shots of the same species later in the year. Running out of time though...

The first one is a Burmese python that I ran over near the Everglades. Sorry for the awkward cropping. The rest of the pic is mostly guts and snake poop, so I left it out.

This one was long enough to get the left and right tire. The cars behind me put him out of his misery, otherwise I bet he would have lived. According to local game wardens, a lot of pythons turned in by the professional hunters have signs of surviving cars.

The second is a pygmy rattler that my neighbor saw hanging out on the sidewalk in Fort Myers.

Hopefully I can get some better pics before the 2020 thread.

Question for the board...

Does snake venom get more potent as the snake ages or is it simply a matter of the volume that gets injected?

Neighbors sent an email blast out to our community that their maintenance people had killed a baby rattlesnake and since I have a small dog I walk mainly in the dark, the thought that babies are more dangerous because they will just inject as much venom as they can crossed my mind.

It's not true. Bigger snake, more volume.

1. Venomous, not poisonous. You can eat venomous snakes, you will be o.k. If you ate a poisonous animal you would regret it.

2. Triangular shaped heads are a poor indicator for whether or not a snake is venomous. Many non-venomous snakes will flatten out their heads into a more triangular shape when threatened in a "threat display". The snake above is a good example of this as are most of our local water snakes.

I'm pretty much in this agreement ... little green grass snakes and blue indigos I will let go, other snakes don't need to be crossing my path.

My mom has this giant and I mean big blue indigo snake that comes into her yard a few times a year.. I let him go because i believe they eat rattle snakes ? He's an intimidating snake he's so big .. but he hauls ass when he sees you. She will call on the cell phone when she sees him, I've seen him 2-3 times myself .. he gets in her pecan tree to try and catch the hummingbirds she feeds I think

Snakes are generally shy creatures and will get the hell out of your way if you give them a wide berth. The fastest snake in the world moves at a whopping 10-12 mph which is a moderate jog for most humans and most snakes move no faster than 5 mph. Moral is... you can get away. A snake can only strike up to 2/3 of the length of its body, so if you are farther away than that, even venomous snakes pose no real threat to humans. The true threat of snakes lies in stepping on one that you never saw. If you see a snake before it bites you, you have won the battle.

Dead? If not, all it takes is a little olive oil and the snakes come right off that stuff.

Nope. I didn't think of olive oil. It has already been handled. Thanks for future reference.

Great tip. I've had a couple rough earth snakes get stuck and couldn't think of anyway to get them loose.

The keys are to cover the entire sticky surface first so they don't restick themselves and you have to add oil as they work themselves out

This thread has gotten me not to kill snakes unless they're venomous (used to say poisonous!), and not even them unless I nearly step on them and they scare the crap out of me or they're in our camp, but not sure I'll ever be touching snakes and oiling them in order to save them. That's a different level of loving reptiles that I'm not to yet.

We prefer if you oil your own snake around here...oiling other snakes is for that school up in Austin.

Aren't those glue traps pretty inhumane anyway? (NOT judging, I've used them too!).
