I'm not a regular on this thread but I got a cool picture of this snake last week. He was catching some rays early in the morning, laying on a gravel road.

natures biggest a-holes. This thread has convinced me not to be prejudiced against snakes, but there is no argument that will convince me to not pour gasoline on every wasp/yellow jacket i come across. sorry for the derail.
Seems like the red (or brown) ones go out of their way NOT to sting me so I'm okay with them, but I'm with you on the yellow jackets. F those a-holes!

As you know, I've had hundreds of rat snakes in the coop this year, but this one acted VERY VERY different from all the others when I was catching him and letting him go. Just wanted to ask the experts and make sure!

A few recent sightings, at or near our home in East Montgomery County.

Couple months ago, found this Gulf Coast Ribbon that had obviously just shed, nice and shiny. Got my granddaughter Addy to hold it, her 5 year old brother was not quite ready to take that step. Found the skin that had been shed a little while later, almost intact. The kids were more excited about that than the snake.

A week or so later, found this Copperhead at my mother-in-law's home down the street from us. First pic is as found on the driveway, then rolled it over. It was so perfect, I thought it was a fake at first.Could not see any obvious injury. Then when I was carrying it away to toss in the woods, thought it moved and might be alive so quickly dropped it. It didn't move so I picked it up and chunked it a short distance into cover. When I went by a little while later, it was gone.

Couple weeks later, my wife calls me from where I was working across the yard to "come kill this Coral snake on the back porch". I respond before seeing it, "probably a milk snake" but she's sure it's a Coral due to the yellow and red bands. Sure enough, Louisiana Milk Snake as I guessed. I was surprised she didn't scream when she saw it.

Weekend before last, the wife calls me to come take care of another GCR sitting in a flower bed behind the pool. After it went for a brief swim, trying to elude me, I picked him up whereupon he got a little excited and bit me. But he calmed right down after that. I see GCRs and Texas Brown Snakes all the time, don't usually even mess with them unless the wife sees them and then have to take "emergency action" so that she doesn't have a heart attack LOL!

All except the Copperhead were safely relocated/released elsewhere on the property.
I am not the Six Million Dollar Man, but I might need that surgery. "We have the technology, we can rebuild him!"

If you, Zooguy and/or 12f Mane ever schedule an excursion to see snakes in the wild let us know. I'd love to go and take my son to learn about them. I'm still deathly afraid of them but I no longer kill every snake I see.

Well, I am in Tennessee, so that would be quite difficult. I am in Austin today and while hiking yesterday saw two blotched water snakes, so that was cool.

Found this guy in our bushes in south Fort Worth. Didn't see him when he was right in front of my face.

Rough green snake?

The only thing throwing me off is it isn't bright green.

Didnt even think about a racer. Thank you.

Just a couple questions.
1. Green snakes aren't that big, right?
2. Are all green snakes bright green?

Green snakes aren't that thick but some specimens get very long (around 4 feet). They are not all bright green, but the vast, vast majority are bright green. Some rare genetic disorders create blue ones.

Yellow bellied racers are far more varied in their color forms. Some yellow bellied racers are bright green as well, but most racers are less monochromatic and will get darker toward the tail. Rough green snakes are a solid color throughout.

Blotched water snake
I am on a FB page (Central Texas Snake ID) and they do not use the name blotched. They call this Plain-bellied water snake. Which is correct? Both?

Blotched and PBWS are essentially the same thing. The blotched water snake, in my non-professional opinion, is really a matter of pattern/observable trait vs a separate species.

Essentially they're the same species, one just has a more defined pattern than the other and some people separate them into subspecies based on that alone... I think. I always call them blotched if they clearly have a blotched pattern. If not, it's just a PBWS. Many times it's somewhere in between.

As always, I defer to 12fmane for his expert opinion

Nerodia erythrogaster is the nominate species for PBWS, YBWS, blotched WS, redbellied WS, copper bellied WS, and Bogert's WS. These common names all refer to the same species of snake.

Each of these common names are usually considered subspecies of N. Erythrogaster, but some experts conclude there is not enough genetic variation to designate them subspecies and these experts consider the "subspecies" merely different color morphs of one widespread species of snake.

To answer your question more directly, the answer would be that both are correct and those names refer to the same species of snake along with the others I listed above.

Leaning towards coral snake on this one but no idea. Found him chowing down on a lizard in Palo Duro Canyon this morning.

The pic is very blurry on my phone when I try to enlarge it, but I'm pretty sure that is a longnose snake and definitely sure it is not a coral snake.

I've had so many Copperhead sightings next to my garage, I feel the need to run your trap system. I may not go so far as to glue mohawks on them, but do want to relocate them to the woods.

Can you walk me through your trap system? Do you bait it? I know you place it next to a wall, etc. correct?

Thanks for the help

Minnow traps from Academy. Square ones would work better, like perch traps, but they cost a lot more. I use the round cheap ones. I just position them along the foundation, or fence lines, or in corners or at the base of trees. Snakes tend to work along these natural obstacles investigating for prey, and simply wander into the trap openings to have a look inside, then can't get out.

They'd work a lot better with a 6 to 12 inch high wall to funnel the snakes in the immediate area towards the trap opening.

Thanks for that.

How do you get them out of the minnow trap and into your 5 gallon bucket to move them out?

Also, no bait, right?
