Found this friendly fella near my wife's compost bin. About 1.5 to 2 foot long. Relocated him to a better location to avoid surprising the wife in the future. Eastern garter?

Lots of pattern and a little lighter than a typical ribbon. Now that I pull it up on a monitor (not a phone) it looks more clear though.

Thanks for the explanation. I know someone who used the fake eggs and light bulbs to kill rat snakes in their chicken coop. It seems like a horrible death for the snakes. Especially when I would have taken the snakes to help control gophers on my property.
If you're still interested and in the BCS area, I apparently have a nearly unlimited supply of rat snakes. There were four more big ones in my coop yesterday. I'd love to give them to someone who wants/needs them instead of relocating them all the time. BTW, now I'm relocating them to the woods about 6 miles away from here. SURELY that is far enough??

You could always take them to Austin. Plenty of rats over there.

I don't see him much anymore. I remember the name though from previous years.
I lurk more, since I don't have as much free time. I'll post on here more this summer (I'm a teacher and I'll be off). Working full time and having 3 part time jobs tends to keep one busy. I'm also not working a natural resource-type job right now, so my focus is not there as much.

I'm still trying to leave teaching, but finding it very difficult to do so. Maybe one of these years.

I just thought of a story from when I worked at a particular zoo. It was the 3rd zoo I worked at, but 1st I worked at full time. I was an Education Director, and moving to the location sight unseen.

My first day, one of the reptile keepers (who I later found out had interviewed for the job as well) brought in a 9 foot Mexican Boa. She was attempting to intimidate me (the snake was never handled; it was a cold day, so it wasn't very active), but was surprised when I had no general fear of it.

Later, found out she had been a stripper at the local strip joint (which I couldn't figure out... she was scaarrrry).

After I had worked there for a couple of years, found out a local citizen had been bitten by a Rhino Viper. We didn't have those at the zoo, and this zoo was quite remote, so I found it quite bizarre. Of course, said stripper/zoo keeper owned it illegally, and had let her friend pick it up (of course dude was going to get bitten). She never acknowledged it officially, but she was suspended for 2 weeks and everyone knew why. Got all of her illegal snakes taken by the proper authorities. Fun times.

Well, whomever was stupid enough to get that close to the STD-infested skank, yes, I guess.

Gave new meaning to the word "herp" huh? Sounds like she was more dangerous than the Rhinoceros Viper...LOL.

That's why they keep those places darker than a snake's den.

Or so I've heard....

3 year old black lab may have been bitten by a copperhead. Anything we can do at home or does he need to go to the emergency vet? Thanks!

I'd start a thread on the outdoor board. More people and probably some vets would see it.

ETA: and one on premium. I know some vet grads read that board

Not a vet but the usual remedy is 1mg of Benadryl (believe tablets only) per lb. and then a trip to the vet.

Edit - missed the black lab part...

Much like a human, if airway, breathing or circulation is compromised, seek emergency treatment.

Copperhead venom is hemotoxin meaning it primarily effects the blood.

Saw this little dude munching on some tadpoles. Couldn't get a better picture because he scurried off under the culvert once he noticed me.
