There are timber rattlers in that area. This is not one but the pattern and black tail make it look like one. Likely hognose....

I saw pictures of hognoses and some
have a "ring" near the tail. To me it looks like there is one on that snake as well. Is that correct?

Typically a western hog is black with a few orangish checkers. The picture you provided is captive produced genetic mutant. Plus not really in range of westerns in halletsville. While they use to have pockets throughout the area (east Texas, gulf coast) it would be a significant find.

The color is one thing I think is off. I do not think it is really black, just looks that way due to the lack of color of the overall photo.

There were some pretty awesome snakes in there. You should name them (and whether "poisonous" or not) so we folks can learn wtf not to kill.

1. Baird's ratsnake
2. Rock rattlesnake (ven)
3. Copperhead (Ven)
4. Alterna (grey-banded kingsnake)
5. Same as above
6 Mexican Hognose
7 Mexican Hognose
8 Mexican hognose as found

All these snakes were found in Terrell, Jeff Davis or Presidio counties.

This was my second guess, and seeing it on a computer and not my cellphone, I'm much more confident that this is a headless cottonmouth.

I will defer to 12f Mane. My main hangup on cottonmouth is I do not think that is true to color, based off all the other colors I am seeing it as lighter. Plus he knows more about LECHS (Lame east coast herps). LOL.

Saw this guy at Halls Bayou Ranch in Galveston County (Santa Fe, TX).
Almost ran over him with my Polaris but safely relocated him to side of road. Really neat snake.

The speckled king snake is one of the prettiest snakes. Since its preferred food includes venomous snakes, it's a great snake to have around.

Got my first capture of the year today. About a 2 foot hognose, and it put up quite the hiss and hood show. Even a couple of mock strikes. I'll put up a couple of pictures in a bit.
