The problem is those arent Indians, they're Americans. Their parents and grandparents were Indians. The kids in the photo are indistinguishable from white American college students in every way but skin color.

This idea that that picture is filled with a bunch of F1s who barely speak English is just wrong. And using that as the launching point for the argument that we need to limit future immigration, which i agree with, is silly. Those kids are from families that have been here for 2-3 generations in many cases, and they are/will be highly productive and law abiding members of society that offer real financial value.

These kids in the pic aren't the problematic people. They are Americans, born in the US, and assimilated as to attend football games and cheering for their team. They seem like anyone else.... except... they are not white.

You say that, yet, I suspect he only shares those views privately or on anonymous message boards. There is no way he shares them at work, at church, with extended family, or out in the open.

I don't understand why this has to be a contentious or racist related claim.

Is it racist to acknowledge that Japanese people are a distinct ethnicity? There was a time in the past when they were not, but over time they became one due to cultural influx and isolation. Ethnogensis of the Japanese was around 500 AD.

The English later than that, Britons to Anglos and Saxons, more Scandinavian, then the Normans in 1100, producing the now-English broader ethnicity in the 1300s. It took ~200 years from the Normans to English in Parliament because few spoke French any more.

The American colonies were similar. You had a broad European mixture, and over hundreds of years that produced a self-consciously distinct people. Americans described themselves on these terms, a singular people, normally and repeatedly, including founding fathers like John Jay and Thomas Jefferson. This continued and this "white American" identity was a distinct thing. An American was not an Englishman, and American was not Italian.

The fact that there is a civic identity of American doesn't mean there isn't an ethnic identity American. It isnt racist to talk about that American ethnicity any more than it is to talk about a Jewish, Indian, or Japanese identity.

Distinction does not imply opposition. Saying one person is American by ethnicity and another is Indian by ethnicity doesn't mean you're saying on that basis alone one is inferior to the other.

The attack was implied. Apparently, the presence of these kids on the UT campus is some sort of problem that is bigger than what is being acknowledged. They shouldn't be on this campus or they've somehow created a problem with being on campus.
