I think a lot of people don't understand the 'broadcast' part of broadcast tv. These licensed networks are given the privilege of being able to broadcast over the American airwaves on 2 reserved portions or bands of the radio broadcast spectrum, UHF and VHF. As a part of that license, they must adhere to certain rules and regulations. Kimmel knowingly lying to the American public over the airwaves violated certain of those rules/regulations. That put the Network at risk of losing their license. Cable news channels do not operate under those same rules and regulations (CNN is not a broadcast network, so they can get away with a lot more). Nextstar forced their hand and left them no choice but to suspend the show.
