I think it could be an awesome one season HBO deal, or at most MAYBE two seasons. The hardest part would be illustrating the weight loss. I've never read the other books in the series primarily because I don't think they could conjure up the same feelings that the first book generated (it stands just fine on its own), so I'm not sure I'd want it to go much further but I think it would make an awesome limited series.

Surely someone already owns the movie/television rights to it, right?
From Wiki

Adaptation:
The option for the film rights to One Second After was initially sold to Warner Bros., but has subsequently expired. As of August 2011, a new option was being negotiated with another unknown studio.[6]
In November 2021 the TV rights for the book series were licensed MPI Original Films. J. Michael Straczynski is involved with the production and will be writing the pilot.

A TV show based on a book is always better than a movie.
You can always expand on minor characters.
Each season should be 1 book.

Just my thoughts.

Interesting. That's the guy that wrote and ran Babylon 5, a favorite show of mine that's criminally underrated.

i'm also disappointed in you texags...i opened this thread ready to read a hundred comments about how Ellie was carrying/holding the rifle under her arm.

I thought it was intentional to show the rifle is way too heavy for her and she's a relative newbie to using the gun. And David could pick up on that.

the companion podcast with the show runners said as much. It was a real rifle (not prop) and Bella could barely hold it. Enough takes in the scene where she was sore the next day from holding it up.

I enjoyed this episode.

After 20 years of infection, post apocalyptic living and constant fear of death, most people are not going to be well educated rational thinkers. When someone says "I have the way" and mostly delivers why wouldn't people go along? Then that leader finds men that are willing to get the job done in order to protect their own. Which means killing others in order to survive. America and its government are gone, groups have become tribal.

Even Joel and his brother fit this mold. They have killed and taken in order to survive. It's stated repeatedly.

The party of 4 that was out scavenging, away from the eyes of their wives and children, will do whatever it takes to get through another day. Another week. And they already know this winter is harder, colder and longer as their food supplies dwindle. To that end, it's resulted in cannibalism, they had 3 other bodies already strung up ready to be butchered.

Starving people being fed probably aren't going to ask too many questions.

A solid series to read is called "1 Second After".
The only thing I questioned from the episode was how did the women and children not know about the cannibalism? There is literally nothing to do in the dead of winter for those kids and they didn't snoop around and find the meat locker?

I get not asking too many questions when you're starving but you would think one of the men would confide in his wife/partner at some point so that was strange.

I guess the iron fist rule was so harsh they dared not to go investigate anything...like gun shots and the warehouse literally ablaze.

It's cold and windy out. Why exert the effort and burn calories you don't have unless necessary?

Gunshots were inside and empty building with cinder block walls, which to me indicates a basement since the windows were higher up. By the time the sound gets to neighboring buildings it may have not been noticeable, along with the wind blowing hard.

Inside the building was on fire, strong winds and with everyone Bing inside, it may go unnoticed for awhile. There were only 20-30 people during the dining scene. Joel killed 3 and Ellie killed 2 of the expedition team...so that doesn't leave many men roaming about.

I put all this in the plausible category.
To me it was more that they only go and do what they are told when they are told.

There are tons of subtle hints to that. They all waited to eat until he came in, nobody questions much of anything or they get ***** slapped like the girl did. And he got a much larger portion than anyone else. And they left and walked back to their homes. Nobody was ever out on the streets which you could chalk up to it being cold but I think that was secondary.

He has them under thumb screws and has his enforcers who know whats really going on. And they have the guns. Nobody likely dares to disobey.

I don't think any of them would dare come and interefere unless told to.

Another fan of One Second After here (plan to read the others soon). I would also love to see a series/mini-series like that done since the primary issues at that point are lack of resources to support the current population size.

A related one is the Change/Emberverse series by SM Stirling. Physical laws related to electricity, firearms (gunpowder doesn't burn quickly), etc. all just change (mostly stop working) in an instant. The original trilogy starting with Dies the Fire is the best part. Read the next part of the series (some great, some bad). Never read the third part of the series.

Around 15 years ago or so, wasn't there a TV show where gunpowder stopped working, or am I just imagining that?

I've probably given out 20 copies of the first book of that series (Self-titled) as gifts. Most everyone buys the other 2 soon after.
I just put it on my watchlist at the libraries.

Ironic thing is that they will now all probably die (at least most of them) in short order because they no longer have this evil leader ruling them. They didn't look too happy to be alive though either I guess.

One thing that shows like this sometime gloss over (I think 28 Days Later touched on it), is the astounding number of people that would commit suicide, both at the onset of a breakout and in the years to follow, as they realize it's almost certain death anyways and the world they once knew is never ever coming back. But suicides/intentional overdoses would be off the charts IRL.

Also he speculates that when the girl asks at the start of the episode if they can bury her father it's because she knows they're eating them and obviously doesn't want papa for supper. Of course he says it's too cold to bury him, which should have been our first clue something wasn't kosher.

I think it's pretty clear the people in the town at least had a suspicion what they were eating, and I agree that the girl asking if they could bury him was because she didn't want him eaten. But David was lying and the people believe it because they didn't want to face what they were doing.

That part is actually not unheard of. You can't dig graves by hand in the winter in many areas. The ground is frozen.

That comment by him didn't throw me at all. When they claimed "venison" with a funny look followed by the two of them dragging in a non-dressed-out deer? Then it became pretty obvious

I've figured out my biggest (albeit trivial) suspension-of-disbelief gripe.

Everyone's gear is completely pristine. I think except for Tess early on, how TF does everyone have coats, beanies, jeans, boots, even firearms that look like they were pulled off of a Cabela's shelf just last night? No wear, no tear, no scuffs or scrapes. Nothing.

I grilled chicken thighs last night and accidentally got coal marks on my t-shirt. Everyone in TLOU looks like they just got done with a Patagonia F/W 2023 shoot.

Great episode! Probably my first or second favorite so far. Loved Ellie.

Not ashamed to say but I loved the brutality of this episode and how it started out low…killing a deer, putting a syringe in a wound, then built…Joel torturing and killing those two guys…then the crescendo of Ellie breaking fingers, cleaver to the neck, and going ape**** stabbing David like 35 times…all this against the backdrop of a group resorting to cannibalism.

Ellie was incredible this episode. I know she's been annoying at times, but a lot of that showed her innocence. And now we see that juxtaposed against a little girl pushed to her absolute limits to, first, take care of her and Joel, and then literally fight for her life.

The ending was touching and, as a dad, "baby girl" totally got me in the feels.

Minor annoyances:
- she said they could have half the deer but gave them all of it.
- I realize it is cold, but the deer sits for hours outside with no one making any attempt to gut it.
- Joel miraculously gains all his strength back just in time to take out 3 guys. Lol

What'd you want her to do? Field dress the deer holding them at gunpoint knowing that these are the guys that tried to kill Joel?
