I see we've reached the "criticizing things before they even happen" stage of the thread

Maybe if we just watched the show and waited to see what happens, we would be left with a satisfying answer for why Joel either lives or dies. Idk, I know that's a lot to ask.
A big part of these threads is atmAg whining like a 2 year old about things that no one else cares about.

LOL, I didn't even bring the topic up. Clealry others care about it.

Anyone else watch all their shows with subtitles like me because I can never hear voiceover audio well?

The part where Tommy is giving directions to Joel on how to reach the university, the subtitles say "shouldn't be hard to miss".

Spouse paused to get into a deep conversation about how Tommy should have said "should be hard to miss" because "shouldn't be hard to miss" is an improper double negative. We argued about it for 5 minutes

Rewind back to the scene. Tommy says "Should be hard to miss", the subtitles just ****ed it up

Didn't like this one as much as thought I would have.

Pros
- The Native American couple to open the episode, easily. Could have punctuated how good that scene was by making it a cold open, but no biggie. They were funny, informative, and tonally perfect in this universe.
- The cinematography outside of the Jackson scenes.
- The Joel/Ellie exchange in the bedroom.

Cons
- Ellie for the first 70% of the episode. After IMO the best Ellie episode all series, I found her character to be insufferable for most of this episode. Not a knock on Bella Ramsey as much as it's a knock on the script; the cursing, the standoffishness, the general *******ry of her character - whole time I was like please STFU.
- The Tommy reunion felt anticlimactic. It wasn't like it was super drawn out in the game, but it all seemed really undercooked in terms of not just emotional payoff, but backstory fill-in.
- The last 10-15 minutes felt rushed.

Disney+ doesn't allow it now either. It's obnoxious.

I watch everything with subtitles. Every movie and show has become hard to understand in recent years. I saw a youtube video trying to explain why, but I don't buy their excuses. I forgot what they were, but it was basically blaming the public and not the movie makers. I can understand older movies/shows fine on my current TV setup, but not new ones. So I can't see how it's my fault.

There was a whole thread about that here awhile back - pretty interesting as I recall. Maybe somebody can find and post the link.

What sucks is that I'd LIKE to watch without subtitles. I'm missing out on stuff I could be looking at if it wasn't for me reading the bottom of the screen the whole time.

I hate them, and I hate that sometimes I have to use them. I find myself just reading the whole time instead of watching the scene, even if I can hear the dialogue clearly.

IIRC, it was partially because actors aren't primarily trained for the stage anymore, and partially because the directors don't want them projecting their voice like they are on stage in soft spoken scenes anymore.

It might have been in the Tenet thread.

But I can't watch anything on D+ without subtitles.

Sound mixing on streaming services is so bad that I keep the volume lower and just rely on subtitles most of the time. I'd rather do that than have to scramble for the remote when there's a random ad that is 3X as loud as everything else.

Subtitles on everything here except for live sports. Heavy accents, whispers, better shows with better dialogue where most of the words (if not all) matter, etc. All of those are reasons I lean on it and have for probably 15 years.

While I am aware of how muddy the sound mixing is these days I would rather not watch TV than have to watch TV with subtitles.

I much prefer to watch non-live TV with subtitles. So do my kids.

Ok - amidst the subtitle discussion - does anyone watch with audio descriptions?

I have a friend who does and it is the most infuriating thing ever. Like I get the purpose for accessibility reasons, but in my friend's case it's basically just an excuse to not pay attention to what is actually happening on screen. So we just don't watch TV or movies together anymore lol.

For those who have never used them, it's basically a voice-over narrating everything that happens. "Joel and Ellie walk into the room." etc etc etc

I prefer no subtitles, but I agree that the mixing in some shows/movies (*cough* tenent) requires their use. I don't mind them if others want to turn them on though.

I subtitle all streaming but I do find my eyes wandering down to them way too often for no reason at the expense of watching the actual actors, their facial expressions, and their dialog.

I would put it the other way. You WANT to look at the screen, but you can't because you HAVE to read the subtitles.

Been calling them subtitties for years because I've become dependent / can't take my eyes off them.

You read that wrong. I WANT to look at tits, just like I want to look at the main part of the screen, but I HAVE to look at her face (aka the subtitles) despite not wanting to.

The point is that your eyes are drawn to the subtitles rather than the rest of the screen.
