Perhaps they were trying to avoid Chicago? I know its following the game, but the route doens't make logistical sense to me...especially since it was man driving.
It's just a story, bro. They could have driven in giant circles around the country before going to Wyoming. It doesn't matter because there are Zombies so they can do anything without explanation!
No, it's because they went to KC in the source material.

Is there no route around the big cities period though? If it was me, I wouldn't be caught within 30 miles of an urban center if I could prevent it. I'm imagining a group like Joel and Ellie trying to cross through Dallas. Dallas and Fort Worth downtowns could both be completely avoided with a little maneuvering around. Why not the same for KC? Just seems like going into any urban downtown is just asking for trouble, like we saw.

It sounded like they ratted out her brother to FEDRA based on the interrogation scene with the doctor. Her motivation seems to be 100% driven by vengeance.

I think it's WAY too early to criticize Militia Rose yet. We don't know anything about her background or how she got into the position she is now. And we know hardly anything about the group or how the hierarchy works.

All the outrage is a bit premature right now. She got to her position somehow and I'm sure we'll find out. There are countless things that could be going on here.

I really enjoyed the episode.
This. aTmag is assuming she came to be the leader through performance in battle. There was clearly an uprising at some point, so it would make more sense that she was involved in that movement rather than being "elected" after proving herself in battle. For all we know, the other leaders were killed, and she stepped up after. This is the exact kind of info we should find out soon, including whether she is competent as a leader or about to drown.

It's also not a given that all soldiers/warriors would want to be the leader. For some, they just play their role and leave the headache of leadership to someone else.

I thought (could be wrong) that he was originally trying to just stay on what amounts to a loop around the outside of the town, but it was blocked off by the semi barricade. So then he was thought he could just hop on an exit and detour around the barricade. Somehow Palpatine returned, and they ended up lost downtown.

I've heard the directors are planning on showing her winning leadership by an arm wrestling competition, to trick viewers into thinking women are stronger than men.

My assumption is based on the environment. We aren't talking about prime minister of a Scandinavian country here. It's a well armed gang acting like African warlords.

Regarding Ellie saying that wasn't the first time she hurt someone, are we assuming she was talking about when she stabbed the zombie in the beginning of episode 3? Or do y'all think she had an incident prior to that?

"The show is fiction and unrealistic so why can't you suspend disbelief about other elements of the story/plot?"

Regardless of what we're talking about specifically in any given story, that kind of question is fallacious reasoning, and it puts an end to any critique at all.

Any story, regardless of how completely unrealistic it is compared to real life, still has to be internally consistent and we still need to see characters react to the fantasy elements in a way that's relatable, otherwise you don't have a meaningful story.

So that type of response is a cop out, really. A fungi-zombie apocalypse might not be "realistic," but if the characters don't behave in response to it in a way we find believable or relatable, then it's not good fiction. So we expect a great deal of realism even in the most fantastical worlds.

I don't know if Kathleen will end up being a realistic choice for her role as yet, because we don't know enough about her or her backstory. But whether her role is "realistic" is definitely relevant and an important factor in the story.

lol i just thought Melanie Lynskey wasn't the best choice for this role and of course the discussion became about 'women in charge'
I had to look her up as she looked vaguely familliar. I only remember her from playing a paedophile in Perks of Being a WallFlower.

I wonder if the point was to have a soft looking woman in the role.

Would we be having this discussion of Terminator 2 Linda Hamilton was playing the role?

Ya i only knew her from 2 and a Half Men lol so my basis wasn't much better. And ya, if I'm being honest, she doesn't have the 'physical presence' to support the role she's in. She is soft. From her voice to the way she walks/carries herself...like, I'm hardly a gun expert but even the way she threatened the Doctor with a gun seemed farcical. It has nothing to do with her being a woman, it's just about her playing this 'mustache twirling' ruthless villain that is just so absurd for the actor. There's no weight behind her. Like when she says "find the collaborators and kill them all" I wanted to laugh.

I never once doubted Marlene as the leader of the Fireflies. Or Tess as the alpha in Joel/smuggling operation. So to me, it has nothing to do with her gender, just her overall...aesthetic in contrast to the role.
Totally agree with this. For me, it's not having a woman in the role. It's the woman they chose. Maybe they'll have an explanation later, but as it is right now, it doesn't appear to be great casting. Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, I'd buy it.

There's a pretty easy way to comprehend how someone in her position could become the leader of a revolutionary force. All these strong, strapping men? Its been 10 years since the fall and who knows how long they battled FEDRA at the QZs. Whose to say she was the first leader? if anything, the smart play is to let the cavalier people fight the early, tough battles and take over in a power vacuum. Not to mention, there are plenty of examples of women leading a revolutionary force, in both battle or symbolism.

If the woman holds symbolic value, then I agree. If she was the daughter of the previous leader to the rebellion who everyone basically worshipped, then I can see how that adoration could be inherited.

Again, we'll see how they explain that in the next episode.

I don't see anything wrong with people commenting on this episode with what we have been given so far. If anything, maybe it's a failing in storytelling, and maybe they should have done a better job at laying the groundwork in this episode.
