He's Matt Chapman from last year.

3/54 M

Quote:

Chapman gets a $2 million signing bonus and a $16 million salary this year under the deal announced Sunday, and his agreement includes a $17 million player option for 2025 with a $2 million buyout. If Chapman exercises that option, he has an $18 million player option for 2026 with a $3 million buyout. The deal includes a $20 million mutual option for 2027 with a $1 million buyout.

Hoping we can unload Pressly. Not a fan of him in the set up role and there has to be a team out there that still hold him in high regard. Then go sign Profar or trade for an OFer.

Sentimentally I wish there was a way we could get Alex back if it comes down to a short deal, but I know there's no way the money works and there's not really a spot for him. I imagine there's some hurt feelings over not getting a bigger offer. Gotta hope he doesn't go to Seattle.

Alex would die in Seattle. It's like the opposite of Coors.

Bregman in Seattle would be career suicide for him. Is there a worse ballpark for him? Would have a hard time Seattle fans embrace the guy also. Bregman screwed up. Or maybe he's fine playing 2B in Boston? That's really the only good landing spot for him out of the rumored teams.

If he plays 2B in Boston, what do you do with Trevor Story? He is still owed 72 M over 3 seasons.

Part of me feels sorry for Bregman and the way all of this has turned out for him.

On the other hand, I am ecstatic that Boras has a black eye for having led a client astray. His resume is tarnished and I hope it costs him new clientele.

I don't know that you can say that his resume is tarnished after the Soto deal. He's definitely a complete asshat but the number of owners who are willing to give out megadeals is very small because they've all learned how badly they play out. His philosophy is certainly not matching with the current business reality of baseball.

I think it will cost him lower level players. Negotiating Soto's contract is a lot different than negotiating a mid tier player. Boras approaches all players as they are top tier and it has cost his clients money. You can only ride the name for so long before they get wise.

Edited to Add:
As a Bregs fan and wish he would have stayed with the team. I don't feel bad for him. It was a choice he made, he will not go hungry due to it, but he will not have the legacy that he would have had here. In the end it will be legacy vs about 10-15 million dollars overall. Not going to be as big as a money issue as he was led to believe.

I don't feel an ounce of sympathy for Bregman. I know we all live in a totally different universe, but he turned down a guaranteed $160M with the organization that made him a star (4 WS appearances, 7 ALCS appearances, etc.)...I can't even begin to rationalize in my head turning that down. Totally his prerogative to chase a bigger deal, but this is the price you pay for greed.

could Bregman end up signing a 1-year deal...and reenter the FA market next year?

At this point I expect a 3 year deal with opt outs at the end of each year.
Which is something the Astros would have definitely been interested in. He's going to end up leaving Houston with a worse deal than what we offered him.

It took me a full season to get used to seeing Springer in another jersey. It will take much less than that for Tucker.

Yall act this is gonna be bad for Bregman.

Yeah it's not what he wanted but he'll still get his just like Correa ended up getting and just like Snell ended up getting.

He'll sign a shorter term with opt outs and either not opt out and get his bag or if he's successful he'll opt out and get an even bigger bag.

Different path same result.

Tell that to Monty or Belli. It doesn't always work out.

He just got his client the biggest contract in history. Doubt his reputation is tarnished.

Yep - the stories I heard what really happened are crazy.
I'm guessing we heard the same story, and neither one of us wants to catch a ban by saying it here.

Huh? Why would you be banned, what's the story?
The story I heard and I'll try to be as respectful as possible was he was involved in a car crash somewhat similar to the one that occurred in the movie The World According to Garp except it wasn't a parked car but on the freeway.

The other difference is the act itself was performed by Alm's "friend" who happened to be male. Once he realized his friend was dead along with a key part of his equipment he decided to commit suicide.

I don't think this catches me a ban but I think you can figure it out with the hints provided.

This story was supposedly relayed from the first officer on the scene but in the interest of protecting his family it was covered up. Allegedly.

It's not greed. At least that's what they tell themselves.

They LOVE to say they're getting the best deal possible to help the next generation of players get the best deal. If you accept a hometown discount you are screwing over your brothers when it comes time for them to negotiate.

I'm sure Boras has "advised" his clients of this thousands of times without once mentioning his commissions.

there's still a chance for Bregman to find his team -- it only takes one

I bet he gets the Snell type deal where it's 2-3 years high AAV and an opt out from a team like the Mets

Give him some credit, he didn't change his Instagram info right away. He kept the pic with him in his Astros jersey till recently. At least it was not minutes after the season was over like some.

The fascinating thing on Bregman is the publically known offer from us. I'm not aware of any of those previous guys having an offer like that. I know Chapman got one the year before but that's not really the same. Having to settle for a lower offer in the same offseason would be a total embarrassment for Boras, especially if it's for a crap team like the Angels because then Bregman gets the trifecta of less money, no chance of winning, and giving the middle finger to a strong legacy.

Snell got 6/150 M from NY last offseason and settled for 2/62 M with the opt-out. It worked out well a year later, but that was a significant downgrade in total money.

I will say this about Bregman, when you get married and have kids a lot of what seemed important as a single person or even a married person doesn't seem as important now.

He's won 2 titles and played in 2 other world series. Maybe at age 30, what matters the most to him is living in a particular part of the country, being closer to a family member is older or sick or whatever, or just trying something new.

None of us are going to know his mind and that of his smoking hot wife for sure. He might have wanted to see what else is out there and then return to Houston like a conquering general to increase salsa sales. Some team might have told him, you have to wait until this date when we waive some guy and then we'll sign you.

They're not us ,and we're not them. We look at George and CC leaving and say "AH HA, they went to worse teams, Alex will be smarter!" but it can't all just be about the team. If it was nobody but minor leaguers would ever play for half the teams in the league.

Bregman would have to buck a 5 year trend of downward offensive production though.....doubtful that happens

She is from here so that is not an issue. Being closer to family in New Mexico? With the kind of money he has, New Mexico is close. If anything he will be further away than he was here.

I think it was just a simple miscalculation on him and his agents part. It happens. Can't blame the guy for wanting money, but what was being suggested that he would get is not matching the real offers.

I think he wants a combination of a good team, the most money, and spring training in Arizona. That is where he lives now.

The point I was trying to make is no one knows what he and his wife want to do. We can speculate but we don't know for sure.
