Sign Framber. Trade Tucker (can't let your superstars keep walking away for nothing and we all know tuck will get 400+) sign bregman and let's see what happens
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

If you are going to sign one and trade one, for me it's sign Tucker and move Framber. Teams winning the WS lately have been built with weaker rotations, deep pens and good hitters. The playoffs don't favor pitching depth as much any more.

I would agree, except for the fact that we know, the only one of the two likely to take a deal that crane would extend is framber....

This is why we should've tried to extend these guys a couple of years ago like we did with Yordan and like how the Braves have done with their young guys

After 2022 framber extension should have been done and it likely would have been similar numbers to Yordan's deal

interesting at the trade deadline last year...Dana chose 'strengthening the rotation' as his #1 priority

passed on strengthening the lineup

After 2022 2023, Framber would have 100% taken a deal like 5-6 year extension for about 100M similar to what Yordan got and it would have kept him through 2027 or 2028 season

We did. They were smart and declined it.

What's the Red Sox play here?

Move Devers to full time DH or have the two split time between 3B and DH?

Also just as an aside I may have missed it but did Bregs ever have surgery to repair his bone spurs?

I knew Tucker did, but I did not realize that Valdez had declined a competitive offer from us

Was there another extension that just wasn't talked about?

I don't think I'm comfortable enough with Framber's mental side to give him a huge contract and make him the cornerstone of the rotation.

Talk about a guy I'd be worried about the contract affecting his play.

It's funny, maybe it would calm him down in those moments.

How good have the Sox been since making the smart move to trade Mookie?

Baseball owners and executives aren't exactly strategic geniuses. If you are banking on them moving on from three superstars and then making 15 smart moves in a row to rebuild, you are going to be disappointed.

It's great the window has stayed open this long, but the 2019 team was the peak and it's gotten a little worse every year since .
They were going to lose Mookie either way. Did it work out for them? No but at the end of the day they lost one year of Mookie (a year they weren't contending anyway). They'd have been in even worse shape 2021-2023 than they have been.

Quote:

The Astros have already offered Alex Bregman the largest contract in franchise history: a six-year deal that USA Today said is worth "around $156 million." Deals signed by both Matt Chapman and Willy Adames suggest Houston must increase its bid if there is serious interest in retaining Bregman, who should fetch a contract worth more than the $182 million Adames received from the San Francisco Giants.

On Tuesday, Houston general manager Dana Brown declined to say whether the Astros have made a new offer to Bregman. The Boston Red Sox are among the other clubs in serious pursuit of Bregman, according to multiple people familiar with the negotiations. Whether that will force Houston to extend beyond its original offer remains a mystery.

"For us, we pretty much set our minds on what we think the guy is worth and what we're willing to give a guy and what it means to the organization and how that affects our payroll and different things like that," Brown said on Tuesday. "I don't like to look at what other teams may consider is our market or the players' market. I think we sort of say to ourselves 'This is what we feel it should be, this is what we think he's worth and we try to get the guy signed.'"

Such a rigid stance may suggest the Astros are comfortable with their initial offer to Bregman, but Brown pushed back on that insinuation, claiming his club is "flexible" to adjust its offers. Bear in mind, though, the Astros have never guaranteed a player more than $151 million during Jim Crane's ownership tenure, nor have they exceeded six years on any contract.

"I think we're flexible," Brown said. "There's a range that you always think about. I think there's flexibility within the range."

Of course they're flexible.

The first offer is never what your final and best offer is.

To trade or not to trade? To sign or not to sign? Important questions. I still contend that "the window" that really is most interesting to me is the one built on the Dana drafts and international signings.

We once were the smartest org in the league. Ownership chose Dana because of his evaluation skills, a somewhat different approach to the game. I believe his drafts are the difference between another multiyear run and mediocrity.

Just because there was no formal offer doesn't mean there weren't some discussions. I've got no inside knowledge of if discussions took place - 2015 would have to enlighten us.

Vaguely Astros related. I'm doing a Netflix rewatch of "Lost" with my kids, who have never seen it before. We're into the 5th season when some of the show takes place in 1977, and the one we watched tonight had this great authentic Sports Illustrated issue from March 14, 1977 being read by a character with Fat Boy Slim on the cover.

Entire article is here: https://vault.si.com/vault/1977/03/14/an-infusion-of-fresh-dodgerblue-blood
LaSorda was 49 at this point.

Pretty prescient cover for SI. The Reds had won the pennant back to back years in 75 and 76, but LA took the West easily in '77 and beat Philly before losing to the Yanks. Garvey, Cey, Reggie Smith and a 28-year-old Dusty Baker all hit 30+ homes. The 'Stros finished third that year at 81-81. The Dodgers had more than 120 HR from four guys. The Astros hit 114 as a team.

Old man money. He's been entirely too healthy after an injury riddled career. I guess they didn't learn their lesson with degrom.

The two teams we know are interested in Tucker are the Cubs and Yankees. I suspect the brass prefers to trade him to the NL and the Cubs also need a closer. I'd offer them Tucker and Pressly for Suzuki, Cam Smith, and James Triantos. Suzuki is a downgrade but a nice plug in RF for a couple years. Can Smith is your middle of the order 3B of the future and Trisntos can compete for an OF spot in spring training as a pesky, low k bat that we covet. Trade simulator has that as a slight win for the Astros.

Would Tucker fetch a couple of top 10 prospects? One being someone's top 3?

Maybe last offseason. I think it's gonna be hard to get a huge haul, but it's about getting the right pieces.

Edit: if you mean top 10 org, I would hope so. I was thinking overall, lol

In that org. So someone number 3 and 8 prospects maybe

If you are mainly interested in 2025 then you could do Bellinger with Paredes and Caissie. Bellinger replaces Tucker, Paredes replaces Bregman snd Caissie gives you the lefty OF to platoon with Meyers / Chas that could become a regular. Maybe you could also sign someone like Christian Walker as well.

Trade Tucker, let Bregman go, sign Framber. Rebuild the farm.

I put the odds of us signing Tucker next season at literally 0%, so no reason to forgo a haul for one season, when he might be hurt/lollygagging anyway

Framber is not going to be a cheap signing unless he completely craters this year. He's the guy who wants to wear all the flashy jewelry, the hair, the framberghini, la grasa. He's not taking a discount for anybody.

I think if the goal is to quickly restock the farm, you have to trade then both. It'll suck this year but it'll be a quick rebound.
MaxPower

Yeah Fried getting over $200M is not good for the prospects of extending Framber. He won't get that money with his age but $150M seems probable.
