I'll reserve judgement on Tatis Sr as our hitting coach until Profar repeats last year's performance this year.

Jake hits lefties well so if you could find a platoon lefty it could work. Cedric Mullins could make sense in a Framber trade (you'd need a lot more coming back). Of course the problem is that still leaves RF and LF….

Yup. I mentioned him a while back. Maybe the last trade deadline. He should be available too.

My guess is nope. Capt. Lou Abreu cost a bunch, with turrible results.

Back to Gamel discussed up thread. I would like to see him brought back on the cheap. In his short stint he put together some really quality and patient at bats - something that would benefit this club. Was actually refreshing to see one if our guys work a count and use all fields.

Stros need batters who can have good ABs at the bottom of the order and get on base at a league average clip.

That's why there was an improvement when they picked up Gamel and Heyward last season.

And that is the only real defense I could make of the Arenado play (ignoring the financial side), is that even if his power is gone, he still gets on base and doesn't strike out much, meaning he could lengthen the lineup at the bottom.

Nonetheless, we need another bat for the middle of the lineup, not the bottom.

They need a bigger free agent for the middle of the order but just having an average MLB player capable of professional ABs in 7-8-9 spots is what they need

Framber for Casas seems obvious but he's a butcher at 1B, which is interesting because he got good grades defensively as a prospect.

If you pay him $13,000,000 his first season, do you get to pay him the minimum next season in pre-arb?

The Red Sox and Orioles desperately need SP. Squeeze them Dana. Get something done.

It definitely feels like we should be able to upgrade at least one position in the OF by trading Framber in that direction. I would love to grab Wilyer Abreu, but I don't see how we sweeten the pot on top of Framber to Boston.

We have a real chance to use our expiring contracts to assemble a new multi-year core. Altuve-Alvarez-Diaz-Paredes-Smith +1

If I'm another team looking at Framber, I have to take his mental approach to the game into account. Sure, he's a good lefty…. Until he isn't. Do I really want to carry Machete (or another Hispanic pitcher whisperer) for Framber to pitch to?

They should just start listing teams that are interested besides NYY, Boston, and LAD, Those 3 teams are literally "interested" in every FA.

chandler driving me straight into the athletic's pay wall.

I hate to be the dumb guy in the room more often than necessary, but why are we all so anti-framber? I know he's a FA after '25, but wouldn't it make more sense to see if we're a good team this year, and if not trade him at the deadline where someone is guaranteed to significantly overpay for a top flight starter?

I'd like to extend him if possible personally.

Same.

I really think that if the Astros can get some decent OF in FA and either resign Bregs or let him walk and sign a FA 1B so Paredes is your guy at 3rd and we have a better option at 1B they can still be really competitive.

I don't think it's that we are anti-Framber. It's more about looking at how to best compete in 25 as well as the next few years after that.

All players are assets that you deploy for the most benefit. To that end, how do you maximize the value that Framber provides the organization? His cost is about to skyrocket. Should we extend him? Should we let him walk next off-season and get the comp pick? Do we trade him?

If trade is the choice, then there is risk in waiting until the trade deadline as he could be hurt, playing poorly. If you get a return you are happy with, then you do it

I think everyone loves Framber despite his idiosyncrasies. Unfortunately I think most people realize that with the shipping of Tucker, with us unlikely to get Bregman back, that our window has closed and if you're going to rebuild, do a rebuild all the way.

You could wait til the deadline but if you are competing (within a few games of the division) that could be a hard sell to fans even if you know in your heart you're just playoff cannon fodder.

There are two problems with waiting. One is he could get hurt and you're effed. He has been a workhorse but the wheels can fall off any time. The second is the team acquiring him can't give him a QO. That's got to be a big selling point for any team acquiring him in the offseason.

That said, deadlines drive deals and you may very well get just as much value at the deadline if he's healthy.

It seems like it's more the risk of which Framber you're gonna get. Maybe you give him an extension and that gives him confidence that he's wanted and pitches lights out. Maybe he feels like he's trade bait and not wanted and can't get his head straight.
He's still our Ace.

listening to Bogusevic on 790 this morning...he makes some really good points about the mega top-of-the-market contracts

using Juan Soto's contract as an example...Soto will either meet expectations or fall short

he won't or cannot exceed expectations or return value above his contract...because it's at the top of the market

whereas Yordan with his extension...can exceed expectations and return financial value to the Astros organization beyond his contract

ultimately those are the players and contracts the Astros are looking for now -- where a player has the potential to "out play" his contract

not sure where the Hader contract fits in this mentality however

it was top-of-the-market but at least only 5 years
