Still lol last season that Heyward and Gamel were picked off the scrap heap and brought better production than the Meyers/Chas duo

Stros use free agency wisely and they're still a contender
Yeah I don't know why Gamel isn't already back on the team.

This isn't hard. Either Teoscar or Santander is a solid add. The both play both corners. Santander is a switch hitter. Teoscar is the more rounded hitter but less pop. Both would be better and cost more than Profar who is strictly a LFer. Both about the same age and a 4 year contract will likely be an ugly 4th year but that is what it is.

Profar is 2 years older so the negative on him is track record plus the wheels likely falling off sooner.

The problem is his GB% has risen from around 30% to 40% and his barrel % has dropped to a minuscule 3.2%. How much you pull is irrelevant if you can't get the ball in the air with minimal force.

For comparison, slappy Mauricio Dubon had a barrel % of 3.5. Yikes.

"If and when Arenado gets traded, he will first have to waive his no-trade clause. He's named six teams he would be willing to waive it for: the Mets, Phillies, Red Sox, Dodgers, Padres, and Angels, according to John Denton of MLB.com."

https://sports.yahoo.com/mets-free-agency-trade-buzz-154222113.html

So Arenado pursuit may just be wasted effort regardless.

Go after Teoscar/Santander then look at mid tier free agents for RF, can live with Meyers in 9 hole as CF

Trade Pressly and Caratini for some lotto tickets prospects. That will free up 20M on top of the net 11M from Tuck.

Sign Santander or Two. For Santander, a deal no longer than 4 years at about 20M AAV. Teo, no longer than 3.

Move Paredes to 1B. Sign Moncada or Urshela to a short deal to fill at 3B and split time with Dezenzo until Cam Smith is ready.

I DO NOT want N.A. He's slowing down and is nowhere near the player he once was. Astros do not need to trade and prospects for him. Not worth it at all imo. I much prefer throwing a young kid in there over the aging vet who'd command so much

Kinda feels like we like Paredes' bat but don't like his defense at 3B so we are desperate to find an alternative.

I wonder if Jim told Dana "I'll let you trade tucker but you have to get Nolan in a trade while you're at it"

Trading tucker and then trading for arenado seem like polar opposite moves. One is a shrewd move with an eye toward the future and the other is a dumb desperation win-now move.

I don't have a problem with the payroll situation, simply from the standpoint that I think the war required would be catastrophic for the game...however there needs to be some regulation of deferrals. At a minimum the full value needs to account on the AAV calculations.

I don't have an issue with deferring money but I think it should count toward the AAV and luxury tax.

Like the dodgers should be on the hook for a 70M AAV with Ohtani

MLBPA would like a word with you

Never gonna happen without the longest strike we've ever seen that will kill the game unfortunately

This one doesn't hurt like Springer. I hated to see him go. To me he was the heart and soul of the team.

Correa was the spine. Literally.

Tucker was the embodiment of his broken shin.

The club will miss Bregman's fire and lower skill set way more than Tucker.

This sums up where I'm at pretty well. Someone else earlier said something to the effect that Tucker's talent will be missed, but not necessarily him personally. I don't get the sense that any team cohesion will be lost with Tucker's departure.

If/when Bregman departs, he'll be missed in the clubhouse.

I'll withhold putting forth an opinion on 2025 until the dust settles re: transactions.

Wonder if the Cardinals would throw Jordan Walker in an Arenado trade and send less money. Rough start to his career there, could benefit from a change of scenery.

I'd do that without hesitation….as long as no Smith in the deal.

I think they need a salary cap just because the competitive balance is being effed by some of these spend crazy teams. The descending draft stock does a decent amount to push parity but if you've got mega market teams throwing billions around it gets tough for a small market to do anything.

I dunno if it's him but I only have remote interest if we are getting other big league pieces like Donovan or Nootbaar. Wasting all your remaining budget on him without upgrading our current garbage OF is unacceptable.

I don't think it should count 1 for 1. There is inherent risk, although still very safe, with deferred monies. Not to mention the time value of money problem.

I think it should be a percentage of each dollar should count toward the yearly AAV, something like 50-70%.

I don't like punishing teams and players who make contracts that both parties consent to and are non predatory. But I do think there should be some stipulation for teams as it is a clear way to avoid the luxury tax, or at least help lesson the penalty.

They have discussed Brendon Donovan with the Cards

If I'm trying to think of what the Cardinals want then both Caratini and one of our CF make sense. The Cardinals had the worst CF production in MLB so sadly either Meyers or Chas are upgrades. With Contreras moving to 1B, they could also use a lefty hitting catcher. Their pen is pretty good and they have a closer, so I don't see them wanting Pressly or Pressly waiving his no trade.

Interesting… would he basically be the new Dubon? Or do they have a full time position planned?

He should be a platoon starter in the OF. Possibly spell a right handed infielder occasionally.

If we are determined to move Paredes off 3B then this move seems more sensible than Arenado. Baty has been just ok at 3B but better than Paredes and has good scouting defensive reports from the minors. He gives you a lefty bat with upside that is big league ready now. McLean I've already mentioned but mid 90s heat with one of the best sweepers in the minors. He would immediately be our #1 pitching prospect and having already reached AA could feasibly contribute the second half of this season. Benge is further away from the majors than most of the Mets OF prospects but has the most upside. He is in the top 100 and ranked lower than Melton but I fully expect he will be ranked higher by end of the season.

This also frees up all of Framber's projected salary, which should make it easy to add Santander and a mid tier starter to replace Framber. Because you no longer need to offer any QO's next offseason, the penalty for going over the luxury tax will effectively just be money.
