Just FYI that is a Texas Spiny lizard, not a Texas horned lizard (aka horny toad).

Almost stepped on this guy today. Luckily he let me know he saw me before i saw him, and he had a rabbit in his mouth lol. Largest rattle snake i have ever seen in person. We let him live and enjoy his lunch.
Awesome! Did you watch him eat it? Or did he retreat and enjoy his meal in peace?

I honestly thought it would take longer than 5 minutes before I got that response.

He wasnt happy for sure but i guess we will find out tomorrow if he finished the rabbit. He kept trying to swallow it like we were going to take it from him lol

Usually getting started and figuring out which way to eat them (literally) can take a little while. Especially with something as big as a cottontail.
Stumbled upon this guy a few years back and the cottontail was still breathing... setup shop and watched him eat the entire thing before deciding to kill him. I actually have video somewhere of the entire deal but I need to find it on YouTube or phone gallery. This is actually the last snake I killed and only because I wanted his skin on my wall.

You wanted the rabbit to die before you killed the snake? Looks like a big ass snake!
The snake already killed the rabbit... it was on its final breaths after being bit when we almost stepped on the snake.
Rabbit was dead as soon as that rattlesnake bit it. He just let the snake swallow the rabbit before he killed it. I'm assuming out of morbid curiosity.

Ahh, yeah I forgot about the whole "venom" thing that meant the rabbit was going to die anyway.
Just consider it giving the snake a last meal...
Any ideas what this is? Found him on my front porch in the middle of Houston when I got home. Sorry about the poor quality images, took a video and then he wandered off under the house before I could get a picture.

they identify it as a water snake. i'm sure there are other diagnostic features of that snake...i was just making a joke.

So this guy was in my wife's cousin's yard in Friendswood. Not great pics but all I have and I can't tell from these. Any guesses?
its slightly hard to tell, but if all else fails, it's probably a rat snake.

With that body position, part of me wants to think it is a racer of some sort, but the markings that I can make out zooming in suggest rat snake.
Do rat snakes tend to raise their head like that? I didn't think about a racer. My father-in-law (a pretty good amateur herper himself) can't tell either.
