I've always gone back and forth. After dwelling on this a lot over the last few months, I think I am in the skeptic camp. The absurdly unlikely events that have to occur in order for aliens to be visiting us just make it far more likely that all of these phenomena are earth-based in one way or another.
Among other things, you have to assume:
1. There is other life in the universe (which I am not at all convinced of).
2. The other life evolved to be intelligent (even more unlikely).
3. The other intelligent life is on a planet that happens to contain the raw materials to create a propulsion system.
4. The other intelligent life did, in fact, progress to the point of being able to develop a propulsion system that could take them off-world.
5. The other intelligent life developed a propulsion system or method of travel that allows them to travel FTL or bend space or otherwise travel interstellar distances.
6. The other intelligent life happened to find us.
7. The other intelligent life is so advanced that they can travel interstellar distances, but they don't want humanity to know about them, but for some reason they sometimes can't stay hidden and are sighted by people, etc, etc.
The above is only the tip of the iceberg. Some of these things are resolved if the aliens who are visiting us are in our own solar system, but the fact remains that the odds of us being visited by extraterrestrials are astronomically long.
We are already living on a planet with intelligent life and propulsion technology RIGHT NOW. It's almost an infinite amount more likely that there is an earth-based explanation for whatever it is people are seeing that they believe are aliens or alien technology. If it's earth-based, you eliminate all of those filters I listed, any one of which would be a complete barrier to extraterrestrial visitation if it wasn't the case, and all of which I think are highly, highly unlikely (except maybe number 1, that extraterrestrial life exists somewhere just as a general proposition).
I think it's kind of ludicrous to jump to the alien explanation when it's objectively far, FAR more likely that it's all earth-based. If governments lie and cover up (which they do), it's far, FAR more likely that they are lying and covering up advanced human technology, not alien visitation.
