I'm now getting the sense that anybody hanging out with Joel and Ellie is a death sentence I guess because the game only revolves those two characters.

My thoughts on the episode....
It was good. Had a terminator 2 type vibe with the kids in the classroom, not sure why.
I was like Ellie, shut the hell up when that shot came out.
Joel was shooting moving targets from 100s of feet away. If there is any lack of verisimilitude that ATMag needs to go on about it, that is it.
I don't mind the vignettes about characters that don't last long, it's entertaining. But they can't keep doing that because as soon as they show a backstory, you'll know that they won't last long. Like a redshirt.
Ellie thinking her blood could heal him was sweet. But I'm think it's not a topical application and the blood needs to be injected.
The suicide wasn't shocking after he shot his brother. Still a good episode and I'm enjoying this show.

lol the zombie hoard coming out of a hole in the ground wasn't "convenient" , they literally showed it was about to happen in the city in the previous episode, so anyone with half a brain was waiting for the zombies to come out of the ground. The ideal time for that to happen? probably would be when a giant truck exploded and there were lots of people around, that's how movies/shows work.

I'm still hating on her character. I never saw any reason anyone would follow her. She made no intelligent choices and ultimately got the entire town killed. I hate to see how bad FEDRA's leadership was to lose to her.
And why would fungus people be buried under ground? How did they get there? Why would they? Don't they need to eat or something?
1. We know her brother was someone everyone loved, believed in forgiveness, etc. Someone more traditionally admirable. But, as we learn, nothing got done under him. It was only when Kathleen took over, with her determination and willingness to use any tool to succeed, that they finally beat FEDRA.
2. The point of the rest, I think, was to show that the same character traits that led her to succeed against FEDRA were ultimately her tragic flaw. She simply couldn't accept that she had won and focus on something else. We are supposed to see this as the flaw that it is, and ultimately the fate of her crew shows us that's correct.
The point, I think, is the juxtaposition. The traits that made her an effective rebel leader didn't make her an effective post-rebellion leader.
I think the missing element in this story working better is that we really just get the pre-Joel/Ellie history from a couple of lines of dialogue. So it works in concept, but while watching it you get so much of Kathleen's flaws and not a lot of "show me" for why she was the one able to break through in their rebellion.

This is a good point, and I think the other context that people are missing/ignoring is that it has only been 10 days since FEDRA has fallen. Her flaws as a leader haven't really had an opportunity to be fully exposed to the broader group.
Plus everyone acts like this was some hardened group of survivalists, not everyday people who had been living in the QZ for 20 years. There was a kid in the ambush party ffs, this wasn't some highly trained/militarized organization

Was it perfect? no. did I have questions as to why things were the way they were? Yes.
but after the episode I turned to my wife and said man this is a really damn good show.
and went on about my day!

the girl being in charge makes a ton of sense, actually. It sounds like the brother was universally loved and very respected. It would make sense that those guys would honor him by not offing his sister.

yeah, that's the point. Kathleen is an average ordinary citizen who survived the outbreak. she's become hardened and ruthless in the post-apocalyptic world.
I do have one complaint. How has there not been any smoking hot women yet on this show! This is HBO. We signed up for some skin!

Ok, my turn to derail this thing temporarily and be triggered. How about we do not use autism as a means to put someone down. As a father of two autistic children, I don't like it being made light of or used in that way, even if it isn't directed at me. Perhaps we can find different ways to insult people. Food for thought. Really enjoyed the episode…and enjoying the series.

It was painful to see how dejected and grown up she is by resigning herself to the reality that this is what the world is - "come on Joel, let's go".
It made me think about kids and the loss of innocence we all go through as we move into adulthood.
