I figured he was just on the cusp of being controlled by the fungus the next morning.

Can the infected control themselves? I'm wondering why Sam didn't attack Ellie…

How I saw it. Sam is deaf. Infected need a stimulus to attack. He was sitting not facing her and it was only when Ellie nudged Sam that he attacks. Sam couldn't hear here say "hey" or he would have attacked. It took Ellie touching him to stimulate a response.

One more thing that I'm very impressed with is the show's ability to get viewers to attach on to, empathize with, and ultimately feel strongly about these new peripheral characters. We're only five episodes in and, from the general discourse, it seems like we all engaged with and were, to different degrees, affected by Sarah, Tess, Bill, Frank, Henry, and Sam, and how they were portrayed on screen. A testament to pacing, casting, writing, and acting.

Except for Kathleen though. That preteen infected who took her out was the real MVP of episode 5.

That was good entertainment.

Spoiler alert-

Even the bad frumpy girl everyone was hating on here redeemed her story, and did a good job acting it out to the end

The big blob bear doesnt make much sense though…very much a rando first person shooter game obstacle on film. Maybe it comes around with an explanation later.

I didnt figure it was a good idea to just do a little cut and rub a little blood on it…but wouldnt amputation have been a good choice? Then again, what chance does a deaf mute one legged leukemia survivor have in that world.

And definitely, ellie is making really, really dumb choices. But not so much out of character that it is ruining the show.

I'm still hating on her character. I never saw any reason anyone would follow her. She made no intelligent choices and ultimately got the entire town killed. I hate to see how bad FEDRA's leadership was to lose to her.

Yeah I'm with you, the fact that her brother was a leader shouldn't be a compelling reason that she took over. If they really hate FEDRA and their Nazi-like tendencies I'm sure they're not a fan of bloodline reigns either.

They just needed to cast a bad ass female if they were dead set on going in that direction. She certainly did not have the charisma I would expect from a leader of a militia group.

Agreed. She was definitely a horrible leader and had no business being in that position.

However, I'm not calling out her character/position or how stupid Ellie is as problems with the show/plot/writing, but just reflecting on the characters themselves. I think frumpy lady was a horrible leader who should have never been in that position, but crazier things have happened. I can see a scenario where she was thrust into leadership for a few days due to high emotions around her brother being killed, and before anyone else had time to really take power from her.

From what we saw, we are only about 11 days after the revolution. It could have been as simple as her brother's death causing her to lash out and kill one of the FEDRA guys at the hanging, which then was a catalyst for everyone else reacting. Did she really lead a rebellion or was she just the symbol of the rebellion for that time? Her brother was the one who was loved and organized the resistance.

And, as for Ellie, she really is an ungrateful little ***** I am not finding any redeemable quality in her at all. My entire investment in this story and show is strictly for Joel. I care more about him finding his brother than I do about Ellie surviving all the way to Wyoming. I wish the writers didn't make her to be such a brat. I understand she's supposed to be a teenager, but you are literally trekking through the US during a zombie apocalypse with a man who has already demonstrated countless times how brutal, resourceful, and competent he is. You can show the man some respect while simultaneously busting his balls every once in a while. However, she doesn't seem to show him ANY respect or gratefulness at all.

Ungrateful, spoiled, incredibly stupid and oblivious teenagers failing to respect a situation or great people is a story as old as time.

That said, before they get very far down the road joel needs to slap some sense into her.

The one guy did tell her that they all knew the success was all her and not her brother. So they did address that. But still agree it is a horrible miscast, could have done better. I even thought her acting was sub par as well (especially since she is a good actress).

Not to start a 15 page derail, but while I agree Ellie made some stupid decisions, I thought this episode really forced her to grow up and showed Joel he was being stupid too. Joel and Henry were talking about how it's easier to be a kid, because you don't have anyone who relies on you. But then Joel sees the note she left on Sam's grave, and it seemed to me he realized that he was wrong about her, because she felt the same way about Sam as he feels for her.

Just a great episode of TV, and I can't wait for the next one.

Going back to the last episode, do you think that crater was another pit full of zombies like we saw in this one, or something else?
Head Ninja In Charge
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Agreed. I thought that was the best Ellie episode by far. She showed social graces when they were getting to know Henry and Sam, she peeled back more of her innocent side when there was another albeit younger kid around, she was able to jokingly knock down some of Joel's walls for him to gain Henry's trust, and she was protective of Sam which shows she's just not a Princess Zelda there to just be rescued. And then in the end, after that traumatic finale, she was the one that went Joel-style cold and said let's get back to the mission.

Didn't see any of the admittedly annoying tendencies she showed in the earlier episodes.

I'll also agree that it was the best Ellie we've seen so far, but I still don't find her nearly as endearing as Video Game Ellie.

Yep. And she showed a lot of leadership. At the very end when she said "lets go" and Joel followed her, I was thinking she was going to be a teenage OG in a few episodes. Never played the game (hell, don't even own a PS4) so not sure if that is in the cards.

Agree. She didn't redeem herself at all. We are supposed to believe that that bumbling idiot could have led that band of misfits to beat FEDRA? There is no way.

And why would fungus people be buried under ground? How did they get there? Why would they? Don't they need to eat or something?

But that was under a house. Not buildings downtown.

And now I wonder how would FEDRA do that (in the city) in the first place? It's not like fungus people retreat. And if they were able to somehow pull that off, how could they be defeated by that Kathleen moron?

When Joel and the Ambushers get into a shootout, you can see the clear unfrosted glass window pane that Henry uses to spy on the ambush as it's happening

Joel had real trouble hitting the driver of the truck with the zombie guard, but man - he was on fire after taking the time to get Granpappy's rifle all sighted in.

I like how in each episode they do a deep dive into a character's back story, only to kill them off at the end.

I wonder who we will meet and then watch die in the next episode?

Also. Why aren't all the females in this apocalyptic world pregnant? Unless there is some massive stockpile of 20 year old condoms and birth control pills, you would think more of them would be.

You mean that he simply saw them out the window? I don't get how it being unfrosted was a praiseworthy detail. Almost all windows are unfrosted. (I'm not being a smartass, I assume I'm missing something)

This was a big trope on the TWD. The would introduce a character give you a reason to get attached and then kill them off that episode. Really hope this isn't the case going forward. Otherwise, the emotional strings get worn out.

Why don't you go and watch it, instead of arguing about it? It's the only unfrosted pane that he looks out of, and you see it from the other perspective in episode 4.
