Hmm... that seemed like a short episode; kind of wish more had happened.

Immediate reaction: It's hard for me to believe that Kathleen from HR has the screen presence needed to represent someone who is supposed to be a leader of this heavily armed militia group. Maybe the next episode will convince me otherwise…or maybe this lady was really miscast.

I liked everything else about to this episode though.

Another good episode, but why would they drive into a city instead of skirting around them?

They were up against, by all accounts according to Twitter, a pretty good Grammy's tonight. The SB this Sunday and then they'll also be up against the Oscars, I think at the end.

I felt the same way. I saw nothing that would have put her in charge of the entire group of people. Perhaps they end up showing us why she's looked to as the leader, but nothing there so far.

This episode was good, not great for me. Hard to directly follow episode 3. This one felt more like TWD to me (when it was good) than the previous 3.

I think this is one of those moments where you have to remember that it's based on a video game. Driving backroads and avoiding conflict do not make for a good game, and whatever happens in this city seems like it represented a decent chunk of the game. Sure, the show could've decided to have them make the smart decision to avoid cities, but I think it would make the world feel less dangerous if they were able to drive across country without any confrontation.

Yeah, and how hard is it to jump off the highway and back on without getting lost?

I thought it was bc they need to refuel every hour or 2. If you get too rural, then you risk ending up stranded.

Organized enough to destroy the feds. No known rainbow coalition guerrilla do-gooders. Control a city.

I'm rooting for the militia.

So cool to see Joel drop his guard and laugh at the end.

Good episode, very solid for a builder type episode where they have to lay out a new area and characters.

I like that he never *****ed her out for having a gun when he explicitly told her not to have one. So many shows would have the tired dialogue exchange of "I told you not to take a gun!" "Yeah, well, if I didn't you'd be dead right now, you're welcome!" We've seen that done plenty of times.

Also really like the True Faith New Order acoustic cover at the end…another 80's song to signify that **** hit the fan although obviously this cover was not done in the 80's.

Short, simple episode, but in agreement that it was a great, character/relationship building one. Really starting to care and root for these two.

This coming Friday at 9 PM Eastern.

I know it was mentioned earlier, but just a reminder as to when, exactly, episode five discussion will start showing up in this thread, a full 48 hours before it usually does (and yes, it's due to the Super Bowl, as HBO does this nearly every year)...

Apparently in the game he got mad at her for it so that's a nice change for the show

Will second that this was a great episode for building the Ellie-Joel relationship and making us care about the two of them.

That moment at the end where Joel lightened up and laughed at the joke was performed perfectly by the two of them, especially Pascal.

The scene where Ellie shot the guy was incredibly done as well - acting, writing, direction, everything.

I thought this was a pretty weak episode (comparatively). It had great moments (Joel and Ellie telling jokes and Bryan pleading for his life, were the best scenes), but it didn't feel like an HBO show. The actress who is playing the "leader" of the resistance is horribly miscast. I'm not even sure why we should care about their hunt for "Henry" but I can't believe these dudes would take orders from Rose from 2 & Half men. This episode felt the most like a video game in a bad way with the side quest mission and cartoonish villain. Overall I'd give it a 5.5/10.

Melanie Lynskey is a pretty highly regarded actress, who's been in a ton of stuff and nominated for multiple awards (most recently an Emmy last year for Yellowjackets). I totally get how she felt miscast, but she's such a big, indie name that I'm assuming there's a point to casting her, specifically. I would at least give her a chance, and I'm betting we learn more about her character in a way that makes more sense of her casting. Her whole storyline felt deliberately vague and discombobulating, and like they were actively placing someone in that role who you wouldn't think would be in charge in the way she is. But she was ruthless with that doctor, and I loved her argument with him, so I can at least understand how some people would follow her. I would be surprised if the rest of her story doesn't snap into place next week.

This episode seemed a little too Walking Dead for my taste. People didn't act with any common sense. Why wouldn't Joel go up the ramp, cross over, and then go on the other side of the highway? Why would the idiots in KC assume that every lone car driving by was some sort of enemy and start shooting at them? In what universe would a bunch of militant people follow that pathetic woman? That dude with a beard would have been a much more clear choice. At least they made it clear that she was supposed to be an incompetent leader. I assume that is going to come into play later. It would have been worse if they made her laughably "tough" like most of the rest of modern shows (and this show in Ep 1).

I'm very willing to give Mazin the benefit of the doubt with her casting and again like my earlier comment about how I'm glad we didn't hear the tired old trope of "I told you not to take a gun" I enjoy characters playing against type. Would folks be happier if there was a "Negan" running KC?

Ya I didn't mean to say she's a bad actor, I just question her choice for this role. We'll see if that changes but just from this episode it felt horribly incongruent.

This was the first episode we didn't see a flashback, so I was kind of bummed about that. Also felt short changed on the length.

I also told my wife it felt very video game like, but not terribly so. I did like the relationship building between Joel and Ellie.

Overall it was fine. Won't impact my desire to keep wa thing.

Yeah, she'd fine as an actor, but I can think of no scenario where somebody like that would become leader of anything other than a knitting club.

What was the story behind the attic room with the canned food and Superman drawings? Obviously someone was hiding out there but I couldn't make sense of it.
