So, I'm not a zombie nor a video game guy and only started this series because I like Pascal, the kid from GOT, and guns. But, years ago I did read World War Z on a recommendation. I loved it so much I read it twice and years later passed it off to my teenage sons to read and they loved it. Unlike the movie, the book is a series of basically stand alone chapters. Most of the chapters tell a very compelling story from the perspective of one individual. It's why so many thought WWZ should have been a series, not a movie.Proc92 said:

I also really hope we get flashbacks to Bill/Frank/Joel/Tess in later episodes. There was obviously 12 or so years worth of story there, where Joel and Tess worked with Bill and Frank on smuggling or taking care of raiders. We may get a flashback to a raider fight scene or something like that if/when Joel encounters raiders or slavers out in the world.

They couldn't have chosen a better song than "Long, Long Time". I had forgotten how haunting and lovely it is.
I agree with some on here about usually rolling my eyes when there's a gay/trans character in a show who serves no purpose other than to represent diversity. But this was so well-done in terms of acting and writing (in combination with the song used), it just became a love story. Not a romance, but a love story.
I also consider most sex scenes in shows to be gratuitous (regardless of who's involved) but the scene in bed was not graphic and it helped explain so much about the dynamic.

I met my gf in 2016, when I was 50. The years since then have been the most joyful of my life. Recently, my blood pressure and heart rate shot through the roof (I've taken bp meds the last few years due to atherosclerosis). I went to the ER, and I was admitted to the hospital because the doc thought one side of my face was drooping a little bit. Thankfully, CT's and MRI's revealed I hadn't had a stroke.
When I woke the next morning in the hospital room, she was sitting that chair you're talking about, and she said, "I think we're gonna have to stay together forever." I could see how bad the thought of a possible stroke had scared her, and I've spent every day since then realizing how fortunate I am that we ran into each other.
And I've no doubt that it's a big part of why that episode was so moving for me, and you, as well. Sharing life with someone you love is God's greatest gift to us. And that includes our friends as well as our families.
I think the best tribute to how great that episode was is all of this discussion about it, including those who were turned off by it.
I loved the episode.

At it's core, making a long marriage/relationship really work necessarily requires a lot of patience, kindness, forgiveness, and ultimately vulnerability. Especially true when you have to accept the fact you're not young anymore and have to allow yourself that vulnerability to let your partner care for you when you can't do it alone.
I thought the writers and actors pulled that reality off masterfully.

Agree completely. I often roll my eyes at sex scenes in any movie or show because 9 times out of 10 they are gratuitous and cheesy. This time around at first I thought it felt forced but after watching the whole episode and digesting it I think every scene with Bill and Frank was important.One Louder said:

Yep. This was me too. It felt like a separate movie within a tv show. I also think this episode will subconsciously factor into our thought processes the rest of the season in how we view others Joel and Ellie encounter. A subtle reminder that they've all had experiences in the last 20 years.

#MeToo. I came here to post almost the same exact thing, but yours is better.
You won't find many posters in F16 who are more conservative than me, and during the episode when it was made clear that they were gay I started my groaning and hollering. I still could do without the beard-rubbing kissing (I have to fast-forward or look away or I will literally retch, sue me)….
But as the episode wore on, I started seeing all these parallels between me and my wife. When we met, I was divorced, LOST and leading a reckless life. She was a single mom living with her grandparents with a pretty bleak future.
We're about to celebrate 20 years, and we always say that we 'saved' each other. And I confess that I've even fantasized about the 'dying together at the same time' thing.
Anyway, I was bawling by the end of the episode, and she had a blast making fun of me.
That was a very unexpected and shockingly moving episode of TV

A straight person being uncomfortable at the visual site of two gay people engaging in physical relations on screen is one thing, and I totally get that. Granted, then choosing to voice that disgust on the internet is beyond immature, and the stuff of teenagers in the mid-'00s, but I understand the core, gut reaction. That said, for a sizable chunk of those complaining about the inclusion of a gay relationship in this series (or any other media), it doesn't stop there. It's more than a wince or finding it physically unpleasant. It's all this agenda/grooming nonsense that they endlessly spout, driven by a core belief that being gay is a sin, thus they don't want that sin "celebrated" in the media they consume or pushed on their children in Disney movies or whatever. When, in reality, their ranting is nothing more than over-the-top, anti-woke nonsense that sees gay people and their actions as "wrong," something they fail to realize is their opinion, not a fact. THAT'S what most of us here have a problem with.

I think having it be two relatively average-looking guys makes this story more real and relatable. If, say, Brad Pitt and Channing Tatum were cast as Bill and Frank in this episode maybe you could say they were pushing an agenda. But even then the writing of the episode is what makes it work, so casting like that might still have worked just as well.
