Frank is not in the game in a typical sense. In the game you read letters that provide some backstory and you eventually come across his body. Bill is alive with you until he dies. They changed it quite a bit, but it works much better in this format this way. Bill is essentially the same as in the game but this allows them to tell a much richer story imo.

It was a throwaway moment where you figured out Bill was gay but by no means was 1/100th of the game nonetheless 1/9 of the season.

Not raging, just saying they extrapolated from the story for awards, acclaim, and an extra story.

I wonder how much Caymus paid to be the Official Wine of the Pandemic.

That was a fantastic episode, and not in the way I expected when I tuned in tonight. Great job by both actors and the writers.

I had that same model truck as Bill when I was in high school so I was giddy seeing it be featured on TV. I always knew it could do all those things and not get a scratch.

Great episode

Loved the boobytraps and the raiders getting their asses kicked

Didn't care for the fakeout after bill got shot, but that's just a nitpick

Why was bill having a shootout in the street, 50' from the raiders? Stay hidden and shoot them from behind protection.

Thought it was a fantastic episode, kinda bold to have a one off stand alone episode this early in a shows run, but they pulled it off. Nick Offerman was an excellent casting choice.

Was coming to say the same thing. He did everything right before and during an apocalypse, except he was standing out in the wide open during a shootout.
I'm amazed he survived with only 1 shot.

Otherwise, a well done episode and gave plenty of backstory to the world.

Haha, that is the most "game" this show has felt. Surprised he wasn't no scoping.

I found myself fast forwarding through several portions of that episode. I feel like most of that was unnecessary and put there for an alternative purpose.

Awesome, tragic episode. I love that they set up this apocalyptic paradise where you can live out your days, and showed it. And then Joel and Ellie come in and grab what they need and head on.

I also appreciated how they were in a basement with all the guns they could ever need and made the realistic decision not to just load up on everything. It's not practical to carry that many guns in this scenario. They also had that earlier scene where Joel stashed a semi-automatic rifle because he knew you couldn't find many rounds for that and it was largely useless. Really great world building and attention to detail.

Related to that - to all the gamers in here, does the game limit your inventory like you see in the show? So many survival games let you stock up on everything you find. If TLOU limits you like you would be limited in this situation, that is really awesome.

no spoiler content just my .02 as a big fan of this whole story that's to be told.

All they did was expand (ok REALLY expand) on a foundation that was already there with those 2 characters. And it was awesome!

This reminds me of the episode that Mythic Quest has every season. One episode that tells a bit of backstory but expands on it in a grand way. Sure, it's largely irrelevant to the overarching story, and could've just been a couple of scenes. But it expands on that and tells a great story. I knew the gay aspect of that story would not be well received here, but I think that was a beautiful story of a love grown old.

I thought it was a very good episode. I was completely in that episode the entire time... except for the few jumps ahead during too much bearded gay sex.

I was hoping to get a little more Joel and Tess interaction with Frank and Bill than what we got. I figured, after Joel warned him about the raiders and then Bill was shot, they would call for aid and Joel would help them out or something.

I don't see it as pearl clutching, just that anybody with a half a brain can see the screenplay writers patting themselves on the back for such an "important" episode. Personally I thought the ep was nicely done and gave depth to the world, but c'mon...

I mean, he already did a tactical sweep of his neighborhood in the immediate aftermath of a forced relocation (and execution) with scattergun. Ol Bill made some questions calls in the gun usage department.

Enjoyed the episode, but found myself chortling thinking about how it would be received by some at the onset of their relationship. That was a long and tender love story within our story.

I didn't play much of the game (gasp I mentioned the game!) so I dont know where the story takes us, but I'm interested to see which cities they visit on their journey out west. It'll be cool to see their depiction of different cities in ruins like they did for Boston. In a very haunting way.
I didn't they were leaving Boston based on the show. Thanks taco.

They've made clear in the show they're heading out west in search of bro Tommy. That's why they needed a truck/supplies, etc.

I've never even seen the game or read anything about it.

I had to chuckle when the episode opened with the huge "10 MILES WEST OF BOSTON" text across the screen. Almost like they were trolling this thread specifically.

Fantastic episode.

Why? I was hoping they'd show up and give bill and frank a reason to live.

Bill had a reason to live. It was Frank and Frank was clearly going to die. As he said, there was no cure before the pandemic. If they would have had something to cure him it would have ruined the show. I thought it was a great episode, and something you don't see in Zombie apocalypse movies. It's not like cancer would stop being a thing.

Anyways, the point of the whole episode was to show that there's still more to just surviving than killing zombies. If you're just going to be alone, then what's the point?

At the risk of being band for life, I'll answer your question. Yes, the game limits inventory. There's also not a ton of inventory to be found to begin with. Throw in the clickers that respond to any sound, and you're heavily encouraged to not use your gun.

Could have been, they didn't say. Just some incurable disease. Regardless, it's not like the fungus would cause all of those types of things to stop.
