Oof...had to make a decision b/w Abreu and Hidalgo.

We chose.....poorly.

That one bites.

Hidalgo was a monster before he got shot in the arm though. Another what if.

I don't know that I'd put him on a what if. He performed well. Name me another Astros pitcher who has an RBI in the world series

Don Wilson?

Especially if the Mt Rushmore of What If excludes trades. If trades are included than Joe Morgan has to be in the George Washington slot.

don't laugh...but WAR really likes Adam Everett's 2004, 2005, and 2006 seasons

in fact in 2004 Bagwell (3.7) did not out WAR Everett (3.2) by much

even Jeff Kent (4.0) who had a great 2004 season...did not out WAR Everett by a whole lot

WAR is position specific. SS is one of the positions that has some of the largest replacement gaps.

Wins Above Replacement (WAR)

Definition

WAR measures a player's value in all facets of the game by deciphering how many more wins he's worth than a replacement-level player at his same position (e.g., a Minor League replacement or a readily available fill-in free agent).

For example, if a shortstop and a first baseman offer the same overall production (on offense, defense and the basepaths), the shortstop will have a better WAR because his position sees a lower level of production from replacement-level players.

Quantifying what a win is for an individual player is impossible.

Don Wilson threw 2 no hitters before killing himself at age 29.

Richard was as dominating as anyone I've ever seen. Once he became a full time starter he won 12, 20, 18, 18 and 18 again before the stroke. I was listening to the great Gene Elston when he made his debut against the Giants. 15 Ks and 11 walks.

Another note on Dierker. He threw 106 complete games. I got to know him through other friends and the story of how he finally got into a game is pretty good. He signed with the 45's at 17 after HS. He went to Cocoa and blew them away so they called him up but didn't intend to pitch him that year. He told me he kept going by Luman Harris in the dugout between innings saying he was better than these guys. They finally called his dad to get him to cool it. They weren't selling many tickets so they started him on his 18th birthday and gave him a cake on the field. 3rd batter he faced was Willie Mays.

There's pretty compelling evidence that Don Wilson did not kill himself. Or at least that he fell asleep in a parked car and his wife decided to not bother waking him up, then realized that lack of action had killed at least one of her children, and tried to play dumb.

I'd say there is a compelling case for LMJ to replace someone on this list of we are talking about the Golden Era postseason. If that's the case, I'm replacing Tuck.

Think of things LMJ did in the postseason: 2017 the 24 straight curve balls against the Yankees. Six scoreless innings against the White Sox in 2021 ALDS and six scoreless against the Mariners in the 2022 ALDS. Then, in the 2022 WS where he got lit up by the Phillies (likely tipping pitches), but he wore it for the team to save the rest of the staff.

Yeah. Wilson committed suicide by wife.

I don't think they changed the cause of death. Whatever the guy was electric and with Dierker and Tom Griffin (grandfather of Caden Sorrell) they had the makings of an elite staff.

The story on Wilson was he passed out drunk in the garage with the car running. His wife was pissed he was out drinking and left him out there.

Larry Dierker not only faced Willie Mays that night, he struck him out. He basically threw his arm out later in his career. A great read is Jim Bouton's book, Ball Four. The '69 Astros are very prominent the back half of the book. He is, indeed a great guy and an all time Astro.

If we're talking Golden Era then Pressly belongs on this list and probably in the top half.

Dude has to be the most underappreciated Astro ever.

Dierker pitched 13 years for the Astros and was finished by 29. That's crazy when you think about it.

Alex Bregman
The Tigers, with his old Astros manager A.J. Hinch, and Red Sox, with his old Astros coach Alex Cora, have often been linked to this terrific all-around third baseman with a big postseason resum. The Mariners could use him but would any self-respecting right-handed hitter put themselves in T-Mobile?

Quote:

Teoscar Hernandez
He flat told me "1,000 percent" he wanted to return to the Dodgers. And who wouldn't? But the Red Sox and his old Jays (and possibly his old Mariners) are apparently giving him something to think about. A great bat and terrific clubhouse guy who should capitalize on his huge year in LA.

Anthony Santander
Power hitters, even good ones like Santander, are one constituency not getting their due yet. Understandably, he's been looking to crack $100M. The Jays are nearly everyone's best guess, followed by Boston.

I was 8 years old when Dierker pitched his no hitter against the Expos. For reasons I can't explain, I decided to record the entire radio call of the game using my mom's audio cassette recorder. I've never been able to find the cassettes but hope someday to listen to the full broadcast,
