Sooooooo..... anyone know what America's Foundry Bryan LLC is?

Quote:

Two local governing bodies are now considering incentives to bring a $10 billion dollar manufacturing plant to the RELLIS campus.

The Bryan city council's agenda for next Tuesday (June 18) includes meeting behind closed doors to deliberate an undisclosed property tax abatement and other economic incentives for an unidentified company. The location was only identified as the RELLIS reinvestment zone that was created by the council last month. The council has the option of taking action after next Tuesday's executive session.
Quote:

This follows a notice on Brazos County's website that county commissioners on July 9th will consider a property tax abatement agreement with a company called America's Foundry Bryan LLC.

The notice says on 288 acres in the newly created RELLIS reinvestment zone, the company would spend at least $5 billion dollars to build one or more manufacturing plants and other buildings and ancillary facilities.

And the company would spend at least $5 billion on machinery, equipment, and other tangible personal property.

County judge Duane Peters and Bryan mayor Bobby Gutierrez told WTAW News that they can not release details because they signed a non disclosure agreement.

Can public officials be subject to an NDA where county land or tax dollars are discussed?

This isn't their personal property or checking account we are talking about.

And of course the county will do some abatement while trumpeting the "WE BROUGHT BUSINESS TO THE COUNTY!!!" cheer.

Yes, to a point. The initial discussions with a business regarding their plans can be subject to NDA. Keep in mind, NDA only covers confidential information. Once the project details are out there from another source, the public officials are no longer bound by the NDA when asked to corroborate public information. There are likely some things like revenue projections and such that are part of a request for tax rebates for example that would remain confidential.

While I 100% agree with the quote, that wasn't ole Ben.

From a quick search:

Quote:

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy."
While not exactly the text you sited, the similarity is clear. However, the author attributes it to Alexander Fraser Tytler (15 October 1747 5 January 1813) a "obscure Scotsman." While I could not find an original source in Tytler's writings, it is in line with his somewhat negative feelings about Democracy. So, it may or may not originally be a Tytler quote, but I can say with near certainty that is it not a Franklin quote.

No, but the Foreign LLC application was submitted & approved 5/23/2024. $10B plant has to be a semiconductor fab, so likely a U.S. chip maker who doesn't have a presence in Texas yet.

Interesting to note that SkyWater Technologies CEO Thomas Sonderman was there when Biden signed the CHIPS Act in 2022, and said (excerpted), "Over the past five years, SkyWater has set out to be 'America's foundry' to do our part in the reshoring of semiconductor manufacturing." (emphasis added) Just something I Googled, doesn't necessarily mean anything.

As far as tax abatements, a while back I saw an eye-opening video on the disaster of the state of Louisiana's finances due to politicians enriching themselves by giving all the big corps massive tax abatements. Watch the first minute and a half of "Why Louisiana Stays Poor" and you'll probably want to watch the whole 15 mins (or watch at 2x speed). They have at least realized their 'error' and begun to reform ITEP in recent years.

That's what I was hoping. We need to bring all this high tech manufacturing back home. I won't get political but we can't depend on other countries for this stuff. Chips are literally a matter of national security.

I agree, but it's going to take a while to do it. We will probably need twenty fabs, plus eight to ten packaging and assembly facilities, test houses, etc.

The Samsung plant right outside Austin was a $17-billion dollar plant. It employs around 2k people.

Also very interesting....

Starting in Fall 2025, Texas A&M University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will introduce a new Master of Science program focused on microelectronics and semiconductors. This program will blend digital and analog integrated circuit design with semiconductor manufacturing, ensuring students are proficient in both areas and can collaborate effectively between design and fabrication processes. The development of this program is made possible by a $1 million gift from Samsung Austin Semiconductor.

While not a business that the public goes to, still means some people lost their jobs.

The Kelsey-Seybold call center on Copperfield Parkway has recently closed it appears. The sign is off the building and there hasn't been a single car parked there in weeks. Barely lasted 2 years and now we have two empty call centers in the area; this one and the Wayfair building.

It was opened for a while, then the WuFlu showed its ugly face. I don't think it ever reopened after that.

KS sold out to United Healthcare Optum 2 years ago. Suspect they consolidated or shrunk the spend on call centers. Most of the insurance company acquisitions of physician practices have not been performing well. Many have closed.
