Where was the defense today…care to share your thoughts on them giving up 36 points or nah?

The defense sucked. But, I have history that proves they will be good. We already know what Stroud will be.

Ah so, your comment is history..got it…this is a new year…CJ played good today and you ignore the biggest issue in this game for the Texans, the D…we are literally talking about today's game, not history or the future, but today's game…the D was terrible….just own that…CJ did more than enough to win.

They put 31 points on the board, that should be a win on any day….the defense failed them today and suggesting otherwise, is just wanting to s*** on CJ, nothing more or less.

That last drive is where you earn your big fat extension.

And there is 2 seasons and a game's worth of evidence that CJ is not up to the challenge.

At the end of the day, he's JAG.

1st & goal at the 8…and that's the result??!! The Stroud Cloud is back again…

He also got us there on a clutch drive situation. Yall are crazy. I thought this was a great sign today that this is gonna be a really good team since there's no way the defense plays like this again.

I'm not a rabid fan. My unemotional view is CJ looked really good today. The sack and then then fumble were on the OL there at the end. RG completely whiffed on the sack.

Hate to break it to you but if Stroud plays like this all year, he's getting a 60+ mill extension.

The defense was atrocious all day. The loss is on them. But on one of the few times in his career when the defense lays an egg and needs the offense to bail them out, CJ shows yet again he can't handle pressure situations.

He's an Ohio State QB. Good, but never great. His rookie season was the outlier.

The O bailed them out with 31 points…what the heck are you talking about? Did the O need to score 40, 50…as I said to another poster, you're nothing more than someone that calls into sports talk radio to make your complaint…I am not one that thinks that CJ should be extended, but if we are just talking about this game, he did more than enough.

It was a pressure situation to get the ball down inside the ten with 90 seconds left in the first place. Stroud is getting flak because he ultimately wasn't able to finish an extremely difficult drive which was only necessary because of a comedy of errors by the defense.

Very few people are talking about the fact that we allowed Buffalo to drive 94 yards, or that we dropped a gimme int, or that we blew coverage on a 4th option receiver, or that we gave up 36, or that we created 0 turnovers.

Sure. I'd take Josh Allen over CJ. But I don't think that's an option.

The Texans are a "win now" team and no all pro is walking through the door. Their options are CJ, someone with similar warts to CJ, or a rookie. Maybe there's an outside chance for a blockbuster trade but I really doubt it. My guess is the Texans will choose CJ over someone who doesn't know the system and has his own question marks and/or a rookie.

Well…we have a D that is paying their DE's $80+ million and a corner $30 million, I expect them not to give up 36 points…but again, your issue is just CJ…soooo, I think, for this game, the D is the issue…they are more than paid to not give up that many points.

I genuinely don't understand how anyone who watched that game can come away being anything but encouraged by how stroud played today with the bad taste of his playoff performance hanging over his head. The only way I can make sense out of it is if you already had your mind made up and what happened today didn't matter to you regardless of the outcome.

Was he perfect? obviously not, he had a few plays that he'd like to have back I'm sure and he needs to work on securing the ball, but tearing into him for that 3rd and goal on the 18 on what would have been a miraculous drive had it succeeded at all seems a little bit much. Of course I would have loved to see him not fumble there, but it's not as if you can really throw it away there, and the protection did fail him at the worst time. The game was all but over, and it was only because of his play that we were even in a situation that we had a chance to come back at all. It didn't work out but the game was lost long before that play.

Stroud played well enough to win today. And I say this as someone who had completely written the guy off and had very little hope for him this year. We did not lose this game because of CJ Stroud. I know some people want a scapegoat to take all their frustration out on, but it wasn't on him this time.

Lassiter had easily his worst game as a pro, and even when he wasn't making a mistake he couldn't catch a break for anything. Even when he had a gift thrown right at him that could have ended the game and made up for how he has played up to that point, it just wasn't his day. If nothing else, I am confident he will get it together, he's too good a player not to. Bad games happen.

Blankenship was a bit of a disaster from what I could tell watching live, though I'll have to rewatch and focus more on him to verify what I believe to be the case. It certainly seemed like he was struggling to catch on to the scheme in a big way though. It appeared that he had issues with picking up or passing the right player at times, and he seemed to be slow to react over and over again. His coverage seemed piss poor from when I had a good view of it- definitely wasn't good enough that he should have had the confidence to start trying to jump on routes like he did. But again, this is just from watching casually, so I could find that I'm wrong when I watch again more attentively. Maybe he wasn't as bad as it appeared initially. I'm not real optimistic that will be the case though.

The whole secondary seemed off today, even Stingley was uncharacteristically average from what I saw. He wasn't bad necessarily but he wasn't playing like he's shown he's capable of. Nobody really stood out in a good way in the secondary. There's too much talent in that group to not get better.

Of course it wasn't as if they were helped by a pass rush today either… I loved the Clowney signing and thought (and obviously still do think) it was a much bigger deal than was being made of it, and that he can and will prove to be a difference maker this year. That said, Clowney cannot be the only player on the line getting in the backfield and disrupting plays for much of the game. Not when WAJ and Hunter are on the line. They have to play better, there's no way around it. I would really like to see what this group looks like with macdonald so let's hope he gets healthy enough to be ready for game 5.

In short, the defense sucked out loud. The offense, while not perfect, played surprisingly well imo. And because I feel like the defense is much closer to a known commodity that's likely to play much better, I actually feel better about this teams prospects moving forward than I did before the game as weird as that sounds to admit.

Stroud may fall apart and ruin the whole season yet, but that's not what I saw today. If you hate the guy or are so done with him that there's nothing he could do to redeem himself in your eyes, that's fair after the way he imploded in the playoffs after a bad season last year. But if that's the case just say that, we dont need to pretend he had a bad day for that.

Sorry this turned out a lot longer than I intended.

Great…I agree he shouldn't…but you blamed him for the loss…this wasn't on him…it is pretty simple, but you're hyper-focused on him…again, $100+ million paid on 3 players on the D, they are being paid and didn't show up…tryi focusing on that rather than 2 plays on CJ…literally 2 plays, and this is where you are…I could point to 20 plays on defense that lost this game, but you pick 2 CJ plays…it is so ridiculous.

The loss wasn't on him at all, no qualifiers necessary. If he plays every game this season just like he did today, you give him that massive deal no question. I'm starting to wonder if everyone watched the same game

eta: if the texans got a full season of cj playing like he did today last year, at the very least they're in the super bowl.

While I, in theory, understand not wanting to pay top 5 money for a player who's not top 5, that's not how it works in the nfl. If you're above average and you're up for a new deal, you're getting a top contract. That's why Baker Mayfield now makes as much as Josh Allen. Timing is everything. If CJ is resigned, he will be one of the top 3 highest paid QBs in the game. Just the cost of doing business.

this is 100% correct, I don't know why people struggle with this. The question isn't how much you pay him, it's whether you pay him at all or let him walk. But if you pay him, the amount is basically already determined within a certain range

This. The money is about to get reset big time at QB too. Lamar will get a big extension and Daniels, Maye and Nix are all about to be extension eligible.

That's why CJ turned 50 down.

They probably won't let him walk either. It seems completely backwards but it's a massive risk when you've got the talent the Texans have got on the other side of the ball.
JCA1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah. The fact that the defense is so good and ready to compete for titles right now gives CJ a ton of leverage. Starting over at QB would potentially waste the prime years of this team and CJ's agent knows it. All he has to do is not steer the ship into the rocks and he's getting paid.

This is what I wanted to post, but didn't want to take the time to type it

While I, in theory, understand not wanting to pay top 5 money for a player who's not top 5, that's not how it works in the nfl. If you're above average and you're up for a new deal, you're getting a top contract. That's why Baker Mayfield now makes as much as Josh Allen. Timing is everything. If CJ is resigned, he will be one of the top 3 highest paid QBs in the game. Just the cost of doing business.

This is sort of how I see the Texans position on Stroud- I think they knew his market value was over 50 mil going into negotiations. I think they just decided that if he was willing to agree to that deal that they were willing to gamble that he could get back to his rookie form with the right pieces around him. But I think they knew it was a long shot and the likely situation was where we are now- a season long audition to prove himself for better or worse.

I know they were negotiating, but I'm still of the mind that the default position of the team, now that it's been established there won't be any discounts, is letting him walk. But he's going to have every opportunity to demonstrate that he's worthy of keeping. He's got a running game again, he's got a seemingly much better line, he's got some playmakers, and he's got a defense (we hope). It's all on him. If he proves to be holding the team back I have no doubt that he will be gone. But if he plays like he did today, I definitely see him getting a deal here and it would be the right move. But it's a long season so we'll see what happens. Credit where it's due though, a lot of guys wouldnt ever come back from that playoff disaster. He's at least got some fight left in him

whoa, are folks forgetting that the biggest mistake a franchise can make is give a second contract to an average to above average QB?

so many examples out there...

Dak, Kyler, Tua, et al

I think the only comparison is Dak…he is better than Tia and Kyler…but I understand your point.

Yeah, if your quarterback is not great to elite, you don't sign them to the second contract.

CJ is who he is; a talented quarterback, who can make all the throws, but doesn't have it upstairs with respect to the clutch factor, and intangibles.

CJ is an average NFL quarterback.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

My question with this comment, is who would you want if you don't sign CJ?

ETA…I agree with you, to a point, and I don't know the answer to this question…I actually liked the Baker thought, but he fumbled 3 times today.

Yeah. There's only about 5 or 6 guys in the world who can play QB at an elite level and if you don't have one of them, you're just picking between a host of risky options. While I don't love giving CJ a monster deal, if he can consistently play like he did today, that's good enough for this team to compete for a Super Bowl. That's worth the risk IMO.
