The FBI took a while to crack the San Bernardino shooters phone but some dude in bum f/ck nowhere Alaska cracks it in a few hours? I just don't have time for stupidity like this. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a few more episodes of Love On The Spectrum to watch.
They explained it...he was under 30 years old...duh.
I think TCTTS brought this up earlier and that it seemed weak. My only way to rationale that would be maybe he had a set of fingerprints from her he could mold up or something (it looked like an older thumbprint iphone).

I can't recall but was it him who cracked it?

I thought he said 'they' cracked it and we didn't know who they was.

And FWIW all they did was unlock the phone. Is that THAT hard to do? It wasn't like they had raw cell records and location data and all that stuff that would take a long time to get.

This season is good (better than 2 or 3), unfortunately, it does not have an Alexandra Daddario.

The first two episodes were easily better than just about any two episodes from seasons two and three. Episode two, in particular, was one of the best episodes of television, period, I've seen in a while. Were the first two episodes in league with season one? Of course not. But like many here have already noted, nothing is (nor have I seen anyone comparing this season to season one in terms of quality, so I don't know what that poster was talking about earlier).

Anyway, yes, I totally agree that episode three was a dud, but the sudden, "this show sucks," ready-to-throw-in-the-towel responses have felt a bit premature/out of nowhere.
My wife and I watched Ep 3 last night. I told her afterwards that I'm not sure I can watch anymore.

To me, one word describes the show so far - Depressing.

The Location - Depressing
The Main Characters - Depressing
The Townspeople - Depressing
Always Night - Depressing
The Victims - Disturbing (OK - that's a different word )

As someone said earlier, I just can't connect with any of the characters - they all seem so miserable all the time.

Am I kinda interested in finding out what happened to the victims - sure. Just not sure I can get through another episode.

Just my 2 cents.

I hear you... but that's True Detective. It's *supposed* to be bleak and miserable and depressing as hell. We're on season four now, and its brand has long since been established, so I don't know what else you were expecting.

That said, I totally get the character critique. I don't think Danvers or Navarro are particularly bad - I actually Danvers' characters quite a bit - but I understand not being able to connect with either of them. Each of their plights feel more rooted in their pasts than in the hear and now, so everything about them ends up feeling like exposition/backstory rather than defining their characters through plights/decisions they make in the present.

Honestly, I think Pete is the most interesting character on the show, caught between an assh*le dad, an assh*le boss, and a wife/kid he can't seem to please/make time for. I'm genuinely invested in his allegiance to each and how he's being pulled in all three directions. None of it's backstory. Instead, we're watching it all unfold in real time.

I get that - sure. My wife and I actually watched all of season 3 a few weeks ago for the first time. Just seemed like the overall theme of that season was a little less bleak as you say. We never watched Season 2 and I don't remember much of Season 1 since we only watched it when it aired the first time. From what I remember, Season 1 was dark/bleak but I at least was intrigued by McConaughey and Harrelson's characters.

All that being said, I'll probably stick with it to see it through, because I do want to see the explanation for what happened to the victims. And as always, I enjoy reading others' thoughts on the show as well.

Was it the guy with no limbs and half a face sitting up and talking to Navarro?

I don't know, doing a rewatch now, and both characters weren't all that great to start. McConaughey had past trauma, was quite bleak, and held the view humans shouldn't exist. Harrelson was an adulterer. Around episode 3/4 is when they started to grow on me.

Maybe Danver's is getting a bit of the Skylar White treatment from us and they should avoid putting grumpy women as lead characters.

I dunno, Danvers' line to Peter about calling Immigration on his Dad's mail order bride made me chuckle.

And Navarro's porn chat with Qavvik was a funny scene.

I could see that...but the interactions between the two characters was still awesome, even if they didn't care much for one another or exhibit the best morals or judgment. Marty's reactions to Cohle's hyper-pessimism and nihilism will always be hilarious to me. One of Marty's major flaws was that he always wanted to be assured that everything was ok, even if it was turmoil behind the scenes, he wanted to "fake it til you make it" and maintain the facade...with the case, the state of the world, his marriage, all of it. But he was really just a big self-centered kid who was responsible for a lot of the turmoil and still had a lot of work to do. Cohle was almost the opposite in a lot of ways

I may not have loved both of the characters in the initial episodes, but I was still drawn to them more than characters of any other TD season.

Honestly, if you've ever worked for a long time in an isolated environment where you only see the same people every day for months or years, you get pretty douchy. Totally get the characters from that perspective.

Eye candy never hurts (season 1 is a REALLY good example of that with Marty's gf and wife) but they would REALLY have to shoehorn it into this bleak setting where it would feel ridiculous and completely forced so I understand why they didn't.

Also, if Navarro was super hot you would be wondering WTF is she in this little mining town in nowhere Alaska...she would have moved on a long time ago.

Time to introduce a little chaos and say that...

Michelle Monaghan > Alexandra Daddario

For me at least.

I totally get Marty's "Why not both?" approach, but if I had already landed Monaghan I couldn't imagine for a second A) not being fulfilled, and B) risking it all for Daddario. Daddario has *a* package, to be sure, but Monaghan is the complete package, and absolute dream scenario wife material.

Absolutely. And even though there was ulterior motive involved, her seduction of Cohle was pretty dang hot (and realistic) even though we didn't see Daddario level "goods". Give me a smokin natural looking woman in her 40's with a strong sex drive over a 21 year old hottie any day of the week (if I wasn't married of course). An older woman is more likely gettin down because she really wants it, whereas a college grad aged chick is most likely trying to impress or get something out of someone, or just be liked, to some degree.

I realize this is prob controversial. Not sorry.

Even though she's built like a female MMA fighter and could probably star in a modern "Girlz N Tha Hood" remake with all of the hard ass faces she makes… I bet if you made Navarro up and put her in something that complimented her bod, she'd be very attractive. I'd put money on it.

On our recent rewatch of S1 my wife mentioned that Woody really outkicks his coverage on that show. I noticed he was an exec producer so of I figured that was part of his contract that he got to make out with the hottest actresses available at the time.

I don't know why but over the last week it's really been bothering me that the scientists are the bigger plot. Annie K fits the traditional True Detective victim and overall theme of the show. Normally it's one victim that's the tip of the iceberg, like Annie K, a mass of frozen scientists is the iceberg - no pun intended. They just feel so separate from each other in so many ways. It feels like the writer didn't know how to compel the audience with Annie K by herself so this other wrinkle was added which is way harder to tie to her murder and really stands out to me. The spiral's presence on the guy's head feels more forced as time goes on. To me the murders are too divergent from each other.

Generally it's people that won't be missed that are murdered. People that are ignored and won't draw attention. This is taking place present day, Danvers is on Tinder, and the national news hasn't shown up? Hell not even Anchorage news has showed up or been calling every single person in town? As isolated as Ennis is geographically, something like this happens and the world is going to know about it. Especially with the competence levels of their police force. Also, the scientists are from all over the world, this is an international incident, not just a local jurisdiction issue.

The only plausible explanation is the blizzard Prior mentions to Danvers that delayed the forensic doctor from getting there on time is delaying the news crew. Or maybe they're just waiting in Anchorage to cover it from there (who would blame them for not wanting to travel to Ennis).

Not to get too woke (which unlike some I don't feel this show is too over the top with) I think the scientists vs Annie aspect is one to show the discourse between outsiders and natives. I think Navarro mentions it early that if it's not a big deal until white people start dying.

I think it's also a paralell between Navarro and Danvers. Navarro is the native local who comes back home by choice and Danvers is the white outsider who's there due to a transfer.

As I mentioned earlier I think we're going to start see a coming together of all of this. Everything started contentious but I think as this finishes up we're gonna see and the characters are going to realize that at the end of the day they're a lot alike and not that dissimilar.

Ha, damn it, I missed that. Yeah, I just checked and Blair is definitely the same woman who had just been hit in the face in the pilot. Still, the way she reacts to the symbol is just as weird, and for such a minor character has now appeared two episodes in a row.
She's definitely going to come back around at some point. It's not a knock on this season, or TD in general, but it can become all too easy to spot this kind of tell.

Also the actress who plays Blair is Gene Wilder's daughter so I have a feeling her character will play a much larger role.

Haha no doubt.

Funny story...my wife was standing near a luggage carousel by herself as a recent t.u. college grad in the early 2000's at Austin-Bergstrom when she looked over and noticed Woody Harrelson and some lady peepin her from a distance a carousel or two over.

A few minutes later she decided to smoke a cigarette outside while waiting for a friend to pick her up and the British lady who was hangin with Woody asked if she could bum one...she was under the impression this lady worked for Woody in some capacity. They talked for a bit and I believe the lady casually mentioned that Woody thought she was attractive. A few minutes later, Woody came outside and the lady went back to hang with him on the sidewalk and my wife looked over and saw them both kind of looking and pointing at her.

She decided to be brave and go talk to him and tell him she was a fan. Said he was very polite but definitely had had a few cocktails and definitely seemed interested in her. Fast fwd to 2008 and he marries an Asian woman. My wife still jokingly takes credit for him coming down with "yellow fever".
