This.
The first two episodes were easily better than just about any two episodes from seasons two and three. Episode two, in particular, was one of the best episodes of television, period, I've seen in a while. Were the first two episodes in league with season one? Of course not. But like many here have already noted, nothing is (nor have I seen anyone comparing this season to season one in terms of quality, so I don't know what that poster was talking about earlier).
Anyway, yes, I totally agree that episode three was a dud, but the sudden, "this show sucks," ready-to-throw-in-the-towel responses have felt a bit premature/out of nowhere.
My wife and I watched Ep 3 last night. I told her afterwards that I'm not sure I can watch anymore.
To me, one word describes the show so far - Depressing.
The Location - Depressing
The Main Characters - Depressing
The Townspeople - Depressing
Always Night - Depressing
The Victims - Disturbing (OK - that's a different word )
As someone said earlier, I just can't connect with any of the characters - they all seem so miserable all the time.
Am I kinda interested in finding out what happened to the victims - sure. Just not sure I can get through another episode.
Just my 2 cents.
I hear you... but that's
True Detective. It's *supposed* to be bleak and miserable and depressing as hell. We're on season four now, and its brand has long since been established, so I don't know what else you were expecting.
That said, I totally get the character critique. I don't think Danvers or Navarro are particularly bad - I actually Danvers' characters quite a bit - but I understand not being able to connect with either of them. Each of their plights feel more rooted in their pasts than in the hear and now, so everything about them ends up feeling like exposition/backstory rather than defining their characters through plights/decisions they make in the present.
Honestly, I think Pete is the most interesting character on the show, caught between an assh*le dad, an assh*le boss, and a wife/kid he can't seem to please/make time for. I'm genuinely invested in his allegiance to each and how he's being pulled in all three directions. None of it's backstory. Instead, we're watching it all unfold in real time.
