I'm seeing it sits right at around $740 million domestic. That is incredible!!!

But getting to a billion... another $260 million... putting it into perspective, that's a little less than what Mockingjay Part II has made up to this point since November.
$260 million to go? It's going to be out another 3 months, that's 90 days of viewing. That means averaging less than $3 million a day for 90 days. I think it's going to hit a billion by the end of January.

Overseas numbers really picking up steam, lot of records starting to fall internationally.

Already #2 of all time in Australia and UK. Approaching $100M in Germany. Japan actually saw a jump from last weekend.

And from what I've been reading in a lot of articles, they're expecting Star Wars to actually be pretty big in China due to the massive campaign Disney is doing over there. Although it has to compete with a Sherlock movie, which is huge there.

It is China. Just cook the books and claim the record.

well even if it has about a 50% dropoff this week (holidays over) and then 40% dropoff week to week that means

January:
week 1 - 100 million (12 million per weekday and 45ish on the weekend)
week 2 - 60 million
week 3 - 36 million
week 4 - 21 million

that would put it at $957ish million at the end of january.

then
13 million
8 million
5 million
3 million

end of february would be about $986 million

anything LESS than 40% dropoff week to week and it will blow by $1 billion.
if it is steeper like 50% then it will not reach it.

I wonder if there will be a push from fans to try and hit 1 B.

Just to clarify, I didn't say it wasn't happening... just shows how amazing and dang near impossible $1 Billion is in today's world. So many have seen it multiple times already and yet it will still take MJ part 2's current total to hit the mark. The first 1 Billion dollar movie in US history!!!!

I think this might be a big reason it does make it IF it gets close....I'll do my part....

I'm 3 viewings in already but I'll see it 2 more times before the end of the run I bet with family. I still have to see it in IMAX for one thing. I have seen both 2D and 3D already.

And as mentioned on this thread before, maybe in March there is a push to see it one last time in theaters before its gone.

4 viewings in the first 10 days of release or so for me.

I'm definitely planning on watching it one last time before it leaves theaters.

I've done 2 showings... both 2D at standard theaters. Will hit up the Austin Imax in the near future for viewing #3. #4 will only happen if I get a random night to myself (which is rare) in the upcoming weeks and I decide that's how I want to spend my time.

Maybe it's just me, but I was blown away that the theater on Saturday was pretty much sold out and it's two weeks after release. I'm thinking that TFA will be a pretty good weekend earner, despite drop off during the regular week.

Lets look at how long it'll be #1.

This past week #2 was Daddy's home.

1/9
The Revenant

1/15
13 Hours
Norm of the North

1/22
The 5th Wave
Dirty Grandpa

1/29
Kung Fu Panda 3
The Finest Hours

Can it last all month?
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Kung Fu Panda will knock it down to #2
Bruce Almighty
How long do you want to ignore this user?
At least until Kung Fu Panda
Sea Pony 07

I've seen it twice, I want to see it in IMAX tonight, and probably once more at the end of its run.

I wonder if we are underestimating how many people haven't seen it yet but definitely will. My brother in law grew up with this stuff like I did and he just now saw it with his son a few days ago. I guess the next 2-3 weeks will be very telling about it's sustainability.

I personally think there are still a lot of people that really want to see it, but didn't make it a priority during the Holidays.

Here's a new link to marvel at the box office. TFA has 9 of the top 86 single-day grosses in movie history.

Weekend adjusted up to $90.2M.

$742.2M total, needs $18.3M today to overtake Avatar.

Sunday was what they adjusted up...much higher than the estimate. lots of poeple seeing it before going back to work i bet.

today will be VERY telling....

20 million or higher and this thing is a monster, $1 billion easy
18+ would be a very good non holiday weekday number in week 3, $1 billion still in play
15 is more like what i expect, $1 billion would need a long steady run
12 would be low and mean $1 billion is not doable (imho)
Zombie Jon Snow
How long do you want to ignore this user?

by the way that beat Avatars 3rd weekend by almost $22 million

also for comparison going forward...

Avatar in week 3

8, 7, 7, 6 million M-Th and $50 million on the 4th weekend (13, 21, 16 on F/S/S)

The box office for this movie tells a lot about how Disney will target and market future Star Wars releases. I think there's just too much money to be made strolling down the middle of the road so this thing may get reLucasfied pretty quickly. JJ Abrams does know a thing or two about performing a series reboot. He has to be itching to try something original.

Note: I can't remember if I've mentioned, this graph is only based on original theatrical releases, no re-releases.

I still think the staying power for TFA is going to be stronger than anticipated. I have several coworkers and friends that have not seen it yet but are adamant they will. They just wanted nothing to do with the big crowds around the holidays.

I think so, but I would call $1B the ceiling at this point. Let's see how it does next week.

Avatar made $25M on its third Monday (same calendar day). I think tomorrow is the first day that TFA doesn't outgross Avatar. But it still only needs $15M to overtake it.

Whoops, I don't know what the hell I was looking at when I posted this. Avatar made $8M in its third Monday. Should definitely beat that today.

This is my entire, extended family. Christmas season for us is traveling, family get-togethers, hunting, and 4 birthdays. No one (4 families altogether) have seen it and we are all long-time Star Wars fans. I'm going this weekend (hopefully) to take my little boy.

There are a LOT of people who still need to see it once, and will, but just haven't had time. I'll bet the numbers stay good.

Has anybody posted monday's numbers?

EDIT: Just saw it was around $8 mil. Not great, but very much in line with traditional post Holiday drops for a weekday. The most telling will be what it does this weekend where you would expect it to still be very strong when all these slackers finally decide it's "safe" to go see the movie finally.

This was just posted though. Up to #4 on the worldwide all time list. $1.536 billion.

So exactly what Avatar did at the same point then. I figured this would be the week when it would finally fall below Avatar's daily numbers.

If it follow's Avatar's totals through Sunday, it should be at ~$825M after this weekend.

Came across this. Better than mine since it includes re-releases.

absolutely amazing the staying power Cameron's work has. Titanic, those literal steps on the weekend were probably half due to the soundtrack alone.

Wonder how much Celine made off of that movie

Horner soundtracks. I'm a fan.

RIP

And now I'm sad cause I remembered Avatar sequels won't have his music.
