absolutely amazing the staying power Cameron's work has. Titanic, those literal steps on the weekend were probably half due to the soundtrack alone.

Wonder how much Celine made off of that movie
Read something on reddit on how the steps might have to do with the movie coming out before digital and it opening in new theaters for months after the original release.

Not to mention all the date nights on the weekends, teen girls going out in bunches, etc.

Sorry, not getting this even though I've seen JP about 75 times.

This is including the Clone Wars movie which is bringing the average per film WAY down.

The tone of his question about breeding raptors matches my tone about making sequels to Avatar.

Wait. Star Wars has made in a couple weeks just short of what Avatar made in it's entire run domestically?

It will pass Avatar today.

$950MM looks like its very achievable. $1B is definitely in jeopardy but I still think it gets there. I feel like there are still a lot of people that haven't seen this movie because the holidays got in the way. We'll see if the week-to-week declines start to flatten out.

don't count Cameron out....people have done that too many times.

from what I understand he is again investing a lot of time in new film technologies, this time underwater specifically. i'd expect something incredible visually at least. thats been part of the delay, developing new equipment and technology.

people doubted him on Titanic and Avatar.....heck people doubted T2 the first $100 million budget film.

seriously his track record has shown the longer he takes and the more he spends (and develops) the better it is...

Correct.

technically it has already made MORE than Avatar made in it's domestic FIRST RUN.

Avatar made $749.76 million in its initial run. It made another $10.7 million in its special release of 8/2010.

So Star Wars: TFA passed it's domestic first run on Monday with $750.23 million in 18 days...compared to $749.76 million in 234 days for Avatar.

for comparison....18 days in Avatar stood at $360.2 million or 390 million LESS than SW:TFA at the same point.

if....BIG IF....it has Avatar like numbers the rest of its run (which i doubt)....it would hit $1.14 billion domestically..........

if it simply does HALF of what Avatar did from here on out it will hit 945 million domestically.

I think the reality lies somewhere in between.....

Another $8M yesterday, which beats Avatar's $7.3M. Seems to be sticking pretty close to Avatar this week.

Just $2M short of Avatar's $760M. (Again, this includes its re-release.)

Lol, I have to admit I was thinking something like him borrowing story elements from The Little Mermaid for the sequel like the first film was very similar to Pocahontas.

I am really looking forward to Avatar 2. If there is one thing Cameron does better than anybody else, its underwater filming. I'm sure it will have "save the oceans" themes that will piss people off, but it should be spectacular visually. This will definitely be an IMAX movie.

Now that it's #1 domestically.... hang on fools. No it ain't. It's still only really #21 adjusting for inflation. Go ask Tarantino about today's movie prices, or Nolan about 3D ($$$)

I think it finishes #10 behind The Exorcist.

That would actually be more tickets than Empire, Ben Hur, and Avatar, which is impressive.

i know im just messing actually. it's a fantastic feat, esp in only 20 days.

Consider that was re-released constantly for over 40 years.

I bet more people have seen Star Wars.

Yeah, Gone with the Wind can go suck it!!!

I think I said this before on this thread... we should really only be comparing modern movies against movies that have been released since home video has really taken off. In today's world re-releases are very rare and have marginal success because anybody that loves the movie has a home copy. And for the past 10-15 years home audio/video has risen to a point that our home theaters rival most movie theaters.

Also something no one ever considers is....you should add in DVD/BR/PPV sales.

Of course even older movies have that. but not to the level of modern movies.

Frozen is the highest seliing BR of all time with 7.5 million for about $160 million

I can't find good data for all-time DVD/BR right now but as of 2011 it was Finding Nemo with $330 million.

But that was pre Avatar...I'm not sure the record now with that and Frozen.

Still either way it is a lot of potential revenue.

THANK YOU: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS BECOMES THE #1 FILM OF ALL-TIME IN THE US

A SPECIAL MESSAGE TO FANS AS STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS HITS A MAJOR MILESTONE.

Star Wars fans have kept a galaxy far, far away alive for close to 40 years. Without them, there is no Star Wars.

That's why we are humbled and grateful to announce that, thanks to fans new and old, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now the highest grossing film of all-time at the domestic box office, surpassing Avatar's $760.50 million record in just 20 days. The movie now holds the records for biggest opening day at the domestic box office ($119.1 million), biggest opening weekend at the domestic box office ($247.96 million), and biggest IMAX opening at the domestic box office ($30.1 million), among many others.

We are proud of these records, but know that they would not be possible without fans' enthusiasm and continued support. We feel it here and it drives us every day, and it will continue to in the very bright future of Star Wars. There has indeed been an awakening and it's all thanks to you.

StarWars.com. All Star Wars, all the time.
