They might not hit $950MM? Clearly, they need to bring back Jar Jar for VIII. Bring back Lucas too...

Look at my posts again. I've been saying 950 is the ceiling.
Its not a big deal. You made a lot of guesses.

So have you, GTFO
Sure did. I thought it would beat Avatar.

My page 1 prediction of $1.7B international is definitely looking far-fetched now. May start to peter out around $1.5 or lower.

When the Internet was designed, I am pretty sure pissing contests over projected box office figures for a sci fi movie had to have been near the top of the list as to why.

Meantime, it's projected to do about 34.7 over the 4 day weekend.
If it comes through with those numbers, it would pass avatar for adjusted domestic gross at just over 860 million. 11th all time, but that might be as far as it gets, Snow White is next at 938mm. Gonna likely take some re-releases to move up the list, unless it gets a second wind.

I don't have a problem with it being 11th.

If you look at the top 10, other than perhaps Dr. Zhivago, the others are all iconic movies that most recognize as a legendary movie. Most are pop culture reference type movies. Even if people are younger and did not realize those movies were so big for their day, they likely know what the movie is when referenced even if they've never seen it. i base a lot of that on my own kids - if they know of it, most do. the only one they would not know is Dr. Zhivago.

Gone With the Wind - widely regarded as the most seen movie ever, common pop culture reference
Star Wars - obviously
The Sound of Music - huge, still player every year on TV, most everyone recognizes it
ET - another huge sci-fi reference and everyone knows who it is, big pop culture reference
Titanic - recent and it was huge
The Ten Commandments - another longtime legendary film that plays all the time, every year on TV
Jaws - first of the true summer blockbusters, huge pop culture reference
Dr. Zhivago - ok this one escapes even me, never even seen it, but i do know the name and it won some academy awards. also i know alec guiness was in it.
The Exorcist - legendary horror flick, most people know any reference to it
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - biggest film of all-time before Gone with the Wind, legendary, everyone knows it

It crossed a billion foreign today and is at around 1.844 billion globally before the final weekend US numbers.
Avatar looks to be out of reach, the only question is whether it has the legs to catch titanic at 2.186 billion.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think it barely catches Titanic, but not for another few months. Maybe in March before BvS drops.

Only did 3.1mm domestic on Monday.
Looks like the joy ride is coming to an end.
Gonna need international to make up some ore ground on titanic and avatar.
Take a look at my graph above. We'll be seeing the "step effect" come into play that is really pronounced on Titanic and Avatar. The weekdays will be small but I think we'll see significant spikes on the weekends.

Should still have a solid $25M+ weekend coming up here with MLK Day.

Pretty much did $25M exactly, plus an estimated $5.4M tomorrow for MLK day. (Not sure why they're doing estimates for Monday a day early.)

Down 40% from last weekend as expected.

Should be just under $857M by tomorrow night. It should reach $900M sometime in February.

Agreed. I shouldn't be on here.

Now back to the subject.

How in the hell did Ride Along 2 overtake Star Wars this weekend? Its a damn movie getting 14% on RT.

I think its time for Disney to pull out whatever they have in their back pocket. Rogue 1 trailer, Next Civil War trailer, special edition give away, whatever because I don't think its going to see anymore big (relative term) weekends.

Kevin Hart draws, and something tells me most of the audience that that movie is broadcasting to doesn't do research on rottentomatoes.
Brian Earl Spilner

Apparently he has a huge following on social media, which has become pretty significant these days as far as box office goes.

Vin Diesel is (I believe) the most followed celebrity on FB, and that is a huge part of the growing success of the F&F franchise and the likely success of the upcoming xXx sequel.

It is so weird to me these movies have such a draw when I (I know its all about me) have such little interest in them. I guess it can be said about Star Wars for some people, but at least it got fantastic reviews.

Same here. My wife has never scene any of the movies so I have her watching it in the Machete Order before we go to see Episode VII. I have seen it, she clearly hasn't. She knew Darth Vader was Luke's father but the rest of the story is brand new. So far, she's really liking it and just finished Empire Strikes Back.

It'll be in theaters at least another 2 months. Batman vs Superman comes out late March which is the first of the big 2016 releases. It will make it until at least that date.

The only domestic goal left to cross is making the Top 10 Adjusted list. Has to break $938M to edge out Snow White for #10.

Needs $80M more, and it has roughly 2 months to do it.

At this point in their release, Avengers made $69M more and Jurassic World made $60M more. It'll have to outperform those, and I think the weaker competition will be the difference.

Last month I said it was a lock to break $935M+, so let's hope it proves me right...

$14M on the weekend, back up to #2 and just under $2M less than Revenant.

$20M below Avatar's sixth weekend but it's still beating out Avengers and JW. (Both did $11M in its sixth weekend.)

Really is a testament to 2 things:

1) The strength of the Star Wars name
2) The quality of this film and it's throwback to the original style.

Many predicted that EP 1 would break all the records. It had #1 (obviously) but it was a very weak movie. That, unfortunate fact, killed the series. It was just waiting for a revival. It's fans were begging for a real addition to the series rather than a subtraction.

This one delivered and it was rewarded!
