Official for yesterday is $31.4 million. Estimates were basically dead on.

Tally is $571.45M.

Needs 28.55 today to cross 600.

Global is up to $1.16 billion and #10 all time. Just went past Minions, ROTK, Skyfall, and a couple of the Transformers movies.

And that's without many of the international updated figures (most are from the 27th and a bunch are still from the 20th), and again no China yet, and less than 2 weeks in.

One more thing before I get back to work.
I just did some quick math, the movie has done somewhere over 4 million dollars an hour every hour since its release. 67k a minute and just over 1000 dollars a second.

Word on the street in Hollywood is that Sam Worthington has put in to his manager at Discount Tire to get Monday so he can make the talk show circuit rounds to congratulate The Force Awakens for passing Avatar at the box office.

Ok, threw a logarithmic trendline on there. Probably still too high but it's definitely more realistic.

Just eyeball test, based on those trends, I think it finishes between $950M and $1B.

Just did the same thing. At my local theater (16 screens), it's sold out 4 showings today so far, and will probably continue to do so the rest of the night. Although to be fair it's discount tuesday.

my theater today for 12:30 showing only had a handful of people - maybe 20 max in a theater of 100 (all lounge/recliner type seats).......

but there was a 12:00 show just before it and....this theater is an out of the way location and never really very busy at all....thats a decent crowd at this theater on some early in the release weekend evenings. the opening weekend shows for TFA here did not even sell out they were close but the first few rows were open for most shows.

Starting with Episode 8, all Star Wars movies will be May releases. One per year.

I think the anticipation for 7 will keep it tops over 8, but the other hand is that May movies do WAY beter than December movies, traditionally.

Came to watch Hateful Eight and the theater is jam packed. Six sold out showings for SW so far.

Seeing a range of $28.5MM to $29.5MM for Tuesday.

The low end of the range means $600MM will come tomorrow. The high end means it hits that threshold today.

Regardless, the day-to-day percentage declines are now consistently coming in higher than Avatar, so I've updated my nerd model. I'm assuming a 33% drop from last weekend to this weekend, and then settling in at 45% week-to-week drops thereafter. Updated projections:

- $27MM tomorrow
- $21MM on NYE
- $100MM upcoming weekend, cumulative total of $748MM

- $63MM next weekend, cumulative total of $858MM

- $1.0B achieved after 7 weeks

Star Wars has long been part of geek culture.

While that's true, I would argue it's the most mainstream of any of the major fantasy franchises. You can make casual references during everyday conversation and nobody bats an eye.

I think Star Wars entered mainstream with the first prequel. I wasn't alive with the release of the first movie and was too young for the second and third, but I don't recall Star Wars being part of mainstream culture in the late 80s and 90s. To be honest though, I don't think any movie could really hit mainstream pre internet. With things like Comic-Con and multiple comic book movies coming out every year, geek culture is now part of pop culture.

Absolutely ridiculous. It was one of most popular movies of all time. It was at the theaters for over 1 year. Every kid had tons of Star Wars toys and shirts.

It was a summer film. We returned to school in fall. On third day of school, principle had to bring entire school into auditorium. We were threatened with suspensions. All of us were doing the Vader breathing noises constantly and disrupting teachers.
