If past history holds, it will be interesting to see how Ep VIII does overseas versus at home. Domestically I think you can expect Ep VIII to fall short of the VII box office. However, it could do better overseas than VII did because it will be a property growing in notariety. You also wonder if they'll hold back the release in China or not.

well they will have to with a December release again...china allows no foreign films to debut in December usually. They have 2 months every year that they "protect" their domestic productions by not allowing foreign movies and December has been one of them for a while now. the other is in the summer but I forget which month. And they also limit the number of foreign productions that are even shown to soemthing like 34 movies.

Lol, there's always one guy who's gotta bring up the "liberal agenda".

It's a freaking movie and literally nobody overseas saw it as that.

I love Avatar and the reason I brought it up is because many people in the US hate it because they see it as liberal agenda. How many times has that been brought up on this board alone?
I've never heard anyone outside of TexAgs say they don't like Avatar because of its liberal agenda.

You really believe that?

Meantime, 2 billion has been passed.

I've heard phrases like "industrial military complex" used to refer to it quite a few places. It's not as overt elsewhere as it is here, but it's out there. Folks here just sum up what articles outside of this site take a while review to say.

But how many movies basically reference that as a force to "rebel" against? (annnnd, back on topic, eh?)

That goes back to so many espionage, fantasy, underdog movies for the past 50 years.

I thought that pasty little jerk they got to play the main company guy was a really bad caricature. I haven't run across too many corporate pencil necks who are quite so eager to commit genocide.

Just a rough estimate, but its looking like ~930 M projecting per the graph.

Showings are getting more scarce. I think we may try to take it in one more time this week.

I think it finishes around 950. Should run at least as long as JW did.

This is true. Once Deadpool hit theaters, it seemed like SW was dropped from quite a few places. I was going to go once more, but it didn't work out. Now, I will probably just end up waiting for Blu-ray as showings are very scarce.

Gonna aim for my final theater viewing next week sometime.

I can't decide if I want to see it in theaters one more time or wait til bluray to build the excitement.
Brian Earl Spilner

I had the same thought.

Think I'm gonna wait for blu-ray myself. Want to build up a bit of anticipation for it.

Four theater viewings ain't bad.

$3.9M in its 10th weekend, up to $922M domestic. Still outgrossing Jurassic World at the same point.

Needs $26M more to overtake Snow White for #10 on the all-time adjusted list. (JW made $15M in its remaining run, so it probably won't get there, but it's not out of the question.)

Worldwide is up to $2.04B. Crazy thing is it still hasn't outgrossed Furious 7 internationally. ($1.11B vs $1.16B)

Also, how much did it hurt to have China push back the release so far?
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not much. It just isn't big in China.

Just took a look at the numbers. F7 did $390M in China to SW's $125M. That is a massive difference.

Welp, looks like it's just about over. Maybe it manages to make another 2 or 3 million, but it's definitely out of theaters by the time the blu-ray hits on April 5th.

Hell of a run. I mean you look at this graph, and those are all some of the highest-grossing movies of all time and TFA just destroyed them.

$650--700M tops in the US.
Worldwide.... $1.7B

All IMHO, of course.
So you don't even think it tops Avatar. I definitely disagree. I think we have our first 3 B movie.

Crazy thing is, it looks like it could've kept making more if they left it out a full year.

ROFL... these old inflated numbers still make me laugh! Do you really think THAT many more people went to see Snow White back in 1937? I know it takes into account re-releases and movies ran forever back then, but still. There were like 5 total movie theaters back then (sarcasm)... there are thousands of screens in the US today and for 2 weeks each time one of those screens showed Star Wars the theater was 75-100% full.

Slow and steady and wonky accounting wins the race I guess.

IDK. When my dad tells me stories from his childhood (granted, this was the 50s), he went to the movies every Saturday in the summer. It didn't matter what was showing or how many times he had seen it. It was just part of his routine.
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I totally agree. I would say it's pretty definite that TFA was seen by more people on its initial theatrical run.

When Avatar was released, the price of oil as $70... just sayin'
