The main reason to hate Avatar isn't for the horrible acting, or recycled plot line, but for the deviation from the recycled plot line. The Deus Ex Machina of Mother Nature coming to save them at the end of the movie should have signaled to everyone that this is a terrible movie.

I thought Avatar was very good but I was just going by what I hear so often on this board.

It always makes me laugh how some people refuse to be entertained by Avatar because they see it as liberal propaganda.

It's a freaking movie. And a very entertaining one. Amazing how some refuse to put their political leanings aside and just enjoy a movie.

I didn't like it at all, but I didn't see it in the theater, so there's that.

My first viewing of Avatar was in IMAX - wow!!!

Avatar: The story was not that great and a complete ripoff of other movies but it was like nothing I've ever seen in a theater.

I can see why the desperately lonely people got depressed when not in the world/at the theater.

Welp...got a seat at a 11pm showing; would be my 2nd viewing, but this time in 3D.

Avatar was actually the only other movie I've seen twice in theaters that I can ever remember (2D & 3D).

I think it'll beat Avatar domestically but not globally.
This is just my gut feeling: but I believe that the pent-up anticipation for this movie in China is at a level never seen before in that country. I get the feeling that entire country is climbing the walls right now.

Chalk that up to the near-universal acclaim for the film and I think that, when this film FINALLY opens in China, the amount of money that it will make will be staggering for that country. They may see crowds at theaters never seen before.

It's just a gut feeling, but I think that depriving the second-largest market for three weeks from seeing this film is going to result in a box-office total that no box-office analyst will see coming. They will be stunned.

Yeah, I don't even really care as much about the liberal stuff. I am conservative so it probably had a negative undercurrent but it isn't what I immidiately thought of coming out of it. I saw it in IMAX 3D as well and it was fantastic visually, and I appreciate it for that. It just doesn't have a staying power to go see again to me.

The deus ex machina is the biggest part of it as mentioned. Not to mention the complete recycling of a plot. It's also my only big problem with TFA.

I will give people a break about not "putting their political leanings aside", though, BES. Enjoying a movie with a plot where the side representing the viewer gets portrayed very negatively is not like putting the politics of a singer aside to enjoy music. It's like asking a native German to enjoy a WW2 movie portraying Germans terribly. Some people are very passionate and don't like entertainment glorifies their fictional downfall. I personally think avatar was more than that, but I can see why some people didn't enjoy it for that reason.

I need to check out Avatar apparently. I've tried watching it bits and pieces at a time, but just haven't really had the itch to sit down and watch it from start to end.

It kind of need the whole 3d huge screen experience to really appreciate it IMO.

It's not high art, but it's not as bad as people say, either. People say it's a ripoff of Fern Gully or Dances With Wolves, but the truth is that all three are archetypical "going native" stories in the same way that Star Wars is a "hero cycle" story from countless epics.

Still feel the same way about it. And it ruined the crush I had on Adam Driver.

Have you seen Disney's Pocahontas and Fern Gully?

Then you've seen Avatar.

When the full trailer for Avatar came out, I posted on a thread what I gathered was the entire plot of the movie (including plot twists and which characters would align with the good guys and bad guys). I asked someone who had read the script (I believe it was TCTTS) if I was correct in my guesses.

He informed me that I had described the entire plot 100% accurately......just from watching the trailer. I had no desire to see the movie after that because I felt I had already seen it. I've only watched bits and pieces and still have no desire to watch the whole movie. Great special effects can't cover up the subpar story and ham-handed "message" of the plot.

Agree with 1906. Works best on a big screen with 3D. To me it was a one and done type of movie. I enjoyed it and am liberal but I probably won't watch it again.

Some folks take their movie experiences a little extreme and can't enjoy entertainment for entertainments sake. If you want to see some cool fighting scenes and some great visuals, check it out.

At the end of the day it's a movie, not a news expose.

I've heard more about avatar from 1-3 posters on Texags over the last week than I have heard of it since it came out half a decade ago.

But you can say that about how 75% of most movies are gonna go, if not based on the trailer then the typical Hollywood model that so many follow.

It's about how the plot and themes are executed. Avatar gets such a bad rap about the "outsiders trying to ruin what is pure, blah blah blah, liberal agenda", etc.

But how many classic and loved films and books for that matter use that same trope? Stranger in a strange land, and they bring the bad people behind them? That is and has always been something that creates drama.

And the idea that technology or militaristic forces can be the bad guy? Yeah, that happens a lot too in movies.

Avatar has its faults but was a popular and successful movie because Cameron is a damn good filmmaker.

$60MM Saturday per the estimates. Should clear $155MM for the weekend.

If that's true it's amazing. Hardly any drop off from last Saturday which was 68 million. Wow. And that would put it over 500 million in 9 days. Incredible. Previous record was 17 days for JW which is basically 3 weekends. This did it in less than 2.

Official estimates for the weekend are $153M. Highly likely Disney is lowballing that number as per usual. Expect $155-$160M final number.

Obviously demolishes the second weekend record, but perhaps more impressively, puts it in the top ten of all weekends.

Thinking back to how big the Dark Knight was in 2008, how many people I knew saw it that never saw movies like that; all the momentum of Heath Ledger's final performance ... and TFA passed its box office total in 9 days.

Finally going for my 2nd showing on New Year's Day.

And Avatar sucked.
