Unjustified claims that A&M was a 'fraud' appear fraudulent

Following Texas A&M's 10-3 loss to Miami in the first round of the CFP, many critics tried to label the Aggies as "frauds" despite an 11-2 record. Of course, that was outrageous then, and as the Hurricanes have continued to win, those claims look even more ridiculous today.

Accusations of fraud are running rampant in America.

A lot of those accusations, indeed most of them, look to be true. However, some charges of fraud have proven to be… Well, fraudulent.

For example, a few foolish college football podcasters and talking heads called Texas A&M a “fraud” for finishing 11-2 and falling to Miami, 10-3, in the College Football Playoff.

Their accusations of fraud ignored several facts that proved otherwise.

A&M had victories over three ranked opponents. The Aggies defeated 10-win Notre Dame on the road. Their strength of schedule was ranked seventh in the nation by ESPN. Their only regular-season loss was on the road against a ranked SEC opponent.

Alas, as Mark Twain once said: “No amount of evidence will ever persuade an idiot.”

The idiots who called A&M’s season fraudulent must have forgotten that it’s quite common for playoff teams to have sustained a regular-season loss.

Will Huffman, TexAgs
Mike Elko’s Aggies won 11 games for the first time since 2012.

Ten of the 12 teams in the playoffs entered the tournament with at least one loss.

Miami had two losses. The Hurricanes were defeated at home by unranked Louisville and on the road by unranked SMU.

Those Miami losses could add legitimacy to the accusations of fraud against A&M, except for one minor detail — Miami plays Indiana for the national championship on Monday night.

Of course, A&M and Miami were tied 3-3 with less than two minutes remaining. The Hurricanes scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:44 to play.

Afterward, A&M reached the Hurricanes’ 5-yard line before an end zone interception ended the game.

Five yards was the difference between A&M and Miami.

Since then, Miami defeated Ohio State, 24-14, and Ole Miss, 31-27.

No accusations of fraud were levied against the Buckeyes or Rebels.
Critically-thinking observers would see those results and rightly deduce that A&M wasn’t a fraud, but rather a legitimate national championship contender.

Will Huffman, TexAgs
Miami will play Indiana for the national championship on Monday.

That probably doesn’t make A&M’s legions of fans feel any better, though.

Miami’s march to the championship game should be seen as another missed opportunity. The Aggies had a realistic chance to beat Miami.

Therefore, it would seem the Aggies had a realistic chance to play for the national title. It's another example of a frustrating near-miss that’s become way too common in College Station.

Perhaps winning in the playoffs will be A&M’s next step under coach Mike Elko.

Some Aggies will have a different viewpoint. They’ll find solace in Miami’s success. They’ll see it as validation and vindication for A&M.

They will be right, too. But that won’t convince the podcast critics.

Idiots ignore evidence.

Olin,

Congratulations on writing an article that continues to grant you access to the football department. Have you already written your sycophant article for next year?

I love Aggies but this type of attitude is why A&M won't ever win a Natty. You sound like my mom when she says that the players tried hard. Oh, G whillickers.

This team had one of the "best" seasons in history. Aggies made fun of the longhorns all year. There was a one game difference. Who do you think finishes with a better record next year? Aggies or longhorns?

I'll know when you take this post down that I'm right.

I think those who use "fraud" a bit harsh.

But the last 6 quarters this year sucked.

The loss to tu screams "fraud" more than the loss to Miami.

The second half against the sips exposed our weakness on both sides of the ball. Miami simply followed the blueprint. Hopefully we're taking steps to shore it up!

The weakness was our physicality in the last few games even south carolina 1st half. soon as I saw that first half I knew it would be a task to beat tu. It's all about who's hot at the right time now.

Actually, we ended up being exactly what I thought we were all season.

But folks like me were labeled 'Pot Bangers' all season long and constantly asked what it's like to be so miserable in every aspect of our lives that could possibly prompt us to say that we didn't have a national championship caliber team led by a Heisman candidate.

I agree with Olin Buchanan that claiming we were a "fraud" is baseless, but we played our 3 worst games in the last 3 games against Power 4 teams. I had expected us to dominate 4-8 (1-7 SEC) South Carolina from start to finish at home, but we trailed 30-3 at halftime before pulling off the largest comeback in school history. It was very disappointing that we ended our season with 2 consecutive losses to Texas (away) in our final regular season game and Miami in a first-round playoff game at home after an 11-0 start, and it was even more frustrating that we scored just 10 points in the last 6 quarters combined. But I consider this to be a great season for several reasons:

1. 11-2 (7-1 SEC) finish, our best season since an 11-2 (6-2 SEC) finish in 2012

2. 11 regular season wins, our most since 12 regular season wins in 1992

3. CFP appearance for the first time and first-ever home playoff game

4. 7-1 SEC record, our best SEC record outside of an 8-1 SEC finish in 2020

5. Undefeated 7-0 regular season home record for the first time ever

6. Snapped a 7-game losing streak in November Road games with a 38-17 win at Missouri on 11/8, our first November or later road win since a 34-13 win at Tennessee on 12/19/2020

7. Snapped 7-game road losing streak to Power 5 nonconference teams with a 41-40 win at Notre Dame on 9/13, our first road win over a Power 5 nonconference team since a 14-12 win at Pittsburgh on 9/7/2002

8. Snapped a 6-game road losing streak to LSU with a 49-24 win on 10/25 with a win in Baton Rouge for the first time since an 18-13 road win on 9/3/1994

If Elko can go at least 9-3 against next year's tougher schedule that features 10 regular season games against Power 4 opponents: 9 conference games and a nonconference game against Arizona State, he will prove that this year's 11-2 (7-1 SEC) finish wasn't just because of a favorable SEC schedule.

Olin is right

every team in the playoff (except Indiana it appears) had flaws and disappointing losses

Last year, Indiana lost in their first playoff game against the team that made it to the finals, but lost in the finals.

Something to ponder For next season!

We proved we can beat the lower half of the SEC and when we play 3 quality teams (Notre Dame, Miami, Texas), we go 1-2.

A&M....give us room!

the point so many folks are missing...

how many teams have a winning record vs. elite competition?

1. Indiana
2. Miami

the semi-final losers...Oregon and Ole Miss do not have winning records vs. the best teams. Ole Miss is 2-2. Oregon is basically 0-2

We played like crap when it mattered most.
We were lucky we didn't have Bama, Georgia, Ole Miss, or Vandy on the schedule.

Good write up.

We didn't play our best when we most needed to against tu. DKR was loud, for once, and affected the OL.
I think the wind affected our O as much as anything versus Miami.

I hate that we were so close, closer than I can remember, and came up short. Let's go ahead and win it all next year and make it right.

The problem with the A&M mentality is that we need to understand we are frauds until we aren't. People on the outside are going to continue to feel this way until we do something…meaningful. Great you go 11-0 and then what? Lose and get beat up and can't score. Teams were more physical, you have players that talk crap and get worked over. I'm sorry but I for one don't like the narrative that is written or talked about with how close we always are. We played Miami good, we are always a play away, if this happened we win, etc. the problem is..we have ALWAYS been that way and that is why fraud isn't a terrible way to describe us.

One is going to find what one looks for. In addition, one can complain that rose bushes have thorns or rejoice that thorn bushes have roses. It was a great season and the future is bright. NO ONE HAD US GOING 11-1 and into the playoffs preseason. Some of you need to get perspective. SMH.

What I've learned from this thread is that a tampon company would make bank advertising at Kyle Field from the amount of bleeders in this fanbase. We had a good season. Let's have another one. Elko improved drastically from year one and none of you dip ****s ever envisioned an 11-0 start because the schedule was supposed to be so tough. So STFU! You clearly don't know *****

1. Easy schedule.

2. Other than a couple of playmakers, looked shaky throughout.

3. Threw way too many INTs.

I hate that the clock struck midnight in Austin in our Cinderella season, but many (most?) of us knew that it was only a matter of time.

And that's not 'BAS', just the ability to objectively evaluate a football team based on the input being provided by my eyeballs.

Thrilled with the season and progression the team is showing. Looking forward to the continued growth, next season can't get here fast enough.

win 10+ next year.....and at least 2 of those need to be over top teams

The characterization of the characterizers who called us frauds is perhaps appropriate. The whole CFP is changing public perception of good v bad teams in a helpful way. The committee still is ranking largely on political pressure from the big 2 as well as minimum losses.

The addition of a second Go5 team is a good example. It wasn't necessary and it wasn't a good choice for improving revenue but the ACC champion wasn't pretty either. While Saban went over the top complaining about that, he wasn't really wrong.

In the event there is a move to a field of 16 the best Go5 team should be in but the best five champions produced a smelly result and the previous year with best 4 champions getting first round byes was equally awful. One imagines best 15+1 with the +1 being Go5 with all seeded by a meaningful, transparent seeding system. But I'm not holding my breath on transparency…

If A&M is accused of being fraudulent, why isn't Tceh and the small 12 not accused of the same. A&M lost to tu but that's usually expected anyway. They lost to Miami by 7 points in a defensive game. At least it was a game down to the last couple of minutes. Undefeated #4??!! Tceh never scored against Oregon and lost by 23 points. That isn't fraud?!
