I have only seen bits and pieces of Titantic. How did it gross so much? How did it have staying power?
My guess is it captured the estrogen demographic and then they all dragged their ***** husbands/bfs to see it.

Teen girls (and Brian) falling in love with Leonardo DiCaprio and seeing the movie 10 times.

And everything Bunk said. And for the guys, say what you will about the love story, but once the iceberg hits until the movie ends, that is absolutely masterful filmmaking.

Yesterday's $38M tops the list of non-opening Wednesdays, with Transformers being a distant second with $29M (on its second day of release).

With ALL Wednesdays included, it sits at #6 behind Spider-Man 2, which did $40M on its opening day.

On pace to hit $500M in 10 days.
Fandango also reporting that they're seeing the most Christmas Day presales in their history.
Assuming the movie hits $500M and then follows the exact same trajectory as Avengers 1 (actual numbers, not percentage drops), TFA would hit $750M. So at this point it's safe to say that $750M is the absolute floor as of now. Avatar is a dead man walking.
Remaining to be seen: Will it cross $800M? $900M? $1B is probably too optimistic, but it's not out of the question.
quote:Per wikipedia, TPM had a box office of $1.027 billion after being re-released in 3D and ROTS had a box office of roughly $848M. I think that TFA will at least be as big as ROTS. Hell, we're already damned close to it as it sits now.

Can someone explain the point of preordering something that by its very nature can not be sold out?

Christmas 2015 is shaping up to be a massive weekend already and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is every bit as big as everyone expected it to be, dropping only a slight percentage from its debut weekend.
Right now -- and it's early in matinees -- the film could take in anywhere between $170M to $180M to help fuel what is likely to be a historic weekend this could be the first true three-day Christmas and weekend in history that crosses $300M. In fact, there is a good chance it could be a $100M day. Last weekend was calculated at $313M but that included that whopping Disney preview number of $57M for Star Wars.
