Yeah, but isn't TFA like half of Avatar worldwide?

Is this domestic thing just a moral victory?
Two separate categories.

I still compare films on domestic BO, probably always will. the international record is a separate feather in the cap so to speak.
Precisely this. Think of domestic box office as the NBA Championship and International as the Olympic medal.

perfect analogy....and while i don't like to lose the Olympic medal....the NBA champ is the real prize.

Of course, there's the very valid argument of adjusting for inflation, but not to worry, it'll beat it on that list soon.

One thing that Star Wars can definitely claim -

When adjusting for inflation (or going by ticket sales if you prefer to think of it like that), Star Wars is far and away the most successful franchise in history. Blows Harry Potter, LOTR, and everything else right out of the water.

Just look at the top 20. Not a single Harry Potter film to be found. Star Wars is on there FIVE TIMES.

That's literally a quarter of the top 20 list.

What a world we're living in when $400 million doesn't even get you in the top 20 anymore.

You guys without kids probably aren't unaware, but there actually might be one film coming in 2017 that could crack the top 5 although probably not catch TFA for #1 - the sequel to Frozen, which made $400 million with no existing back story or product tie-in line in front of it in 2013, and has only gotten more popular since then. My girls were 1 year old when it came out, never saw it in the theater, and are completely obsessed with it, know all the songs, and have a ton of toys related to it.

Put that thing out in the beginning of summer vacation where armies of toddlers and tweens need to get out of the hot sun, and you could have a monster on your hands.

THAT is entirely correct. F2 will prison rape some records.

When's it coming out? Ep VIII is coming out that summer, too. You have to think Disney doesn't want to compete with themselves. Gotta put those movies out at LEAST two months apart.

That's true. Disney won't trip over themselves. Still, Frozen is going to do some damage.

I wish there was a first run only all time adjusted list.
That's the true apples to Apples, gone with the wind for example has made the majority of its money in re-releases over nearly 3/4 of a century.

I just love that Stanley Tucci is in the top 20. There's something funny and cool about that at the same time.

What I'd like to see is a list/chart of the highest grossing film series domestically, adjusted for inflation. I don't think that exists anywhere, I only see one on wikipedia with worldwide grosses.

Maybe I'll make on when I have some time.

Will Smith being on there in the top 20 with only 23 movies, Eddie Murphy top 5 with only 38 movies and Gary Oldman top 10 with 37 movies. These are impressive

Do they not have one for inflation adjusted totals?

EDIT: Just read further and your other post suggests not...unfortunate.

Closest I've found just doing random searching to Ford in adjusted domestic numbers is Tom Hanks at $7.1 billion. Ford is at $9.3 billion.

Sounds about right. Adjusted for inflation, between Star Wars and Indy alone, that would be an insane amount of money.

Would love to see a big bump. I just hope pirated copies don't detract too much from box office.

Was trying to find info on older actors like Heston but doesn't look like they have them included in the numbers for whatever reason. It would have to be somebody like that.

Well, here it is. Keep in mind this is before TFA finishes its run. I'll post it again with the final numbers once it finishes.

Pretty much as expected but, no series even comes close to Star Wars. I didn't include the MCU because not only is it way too many movies, but I don't really think it should be considered a singular film franchise. Similarly with the Bond films.

Just passed Skyfall for biggest UK film of all time.

Domestic. It's right on the graph.

Craziest thing to me is that SW's per-film average more than doubles HP's.

I heard somewhere that Star Wars is the second most profitable entertainment franchise (movies, tv, books, music, games) next to Call of Duty.

With its own slate of games, I can't imagine SW is less than COD, after all the merchandising etc.

No way in HELL CoD has been more profitable all things considered.

I don't think it was counting merchandising. Just forms of media. But it said it was ahead of Star Wars even counting books and games. This was a couple of years ago though, so things may have changed.
