Numbers for tonight should start rolling in tomorrow morning. We'll have a pretty good idea of whether or not the opening weekend will be broken by early Saturday. From there it will be a race to topple Avatar.

Based on the reviews and instant reactions I've seen so far tonight, I think it has the potential to make $1B domestically and $3.5B worldwide. Sounds crazy, but I think it's doable.

Estimated $55MM from preshows last night. That's 26% higher than the previous record (HP7 Pt 2 - $43.5MM).

Very early estimate, but if it holds TFA will be at $100MM by the end of the day and the opening weekend record will easily fall.

Avatar only did 77 M its opening weekend. Titanic did 28 M. Its about longevity to break some of the all time #s.

Obviously gonna obliterate the opening day record ($91m), but I'm honestly surprised it just barely beat out Harry Potter's midnight record, considering this movie started playing at 7 pm. Did HP really get watched by THAT many people at midnight?

Anecdotal - we got my in-laws to see it. They loved Star Wars in the 80s, saw episode I and tapped out and now haven't been to a movie theater in well over 10 years. Took them to one of the luxury theaters with assigned seats and leather chairs. They were blown away by the experience and will be telling all their old people friends to go see it.

And they found a new date night location other than Cheddar's at 4:30 PM

To be fair, I think HP at its height was just as much of a cultural force as Star Wars is.
Maybe, but SW has lasted decades with peaks as high as anyone. HP lasted a much shorter time and probably won't continue to be a big deal in the future. They have a new movie coming out and I don't think anyone is overly excited about it when compared to SW, Marvel, BvS, etc.

Female lead plus Sci Fi / Comic Books / Fantasy is more widely accepted than it was 20 years ago. I think we will have a ton of females coming with their husbands, BFs, and dads.

At THE TIME Harry Potter had just as much cultural relevance as Star Wars. Some of you olds may not understand this but for children and teens who grew up with the books and the characters themselves, it was huge. HP is the zeitgeist that started the run of YA movies

At my showing, the theater was FULL of all types of people... kids, teenagers, young adults, middle age, old people... man & women. My wife liked it and this is totally not her thing.

If this movie doesn't break all time records it's gonna get dang close because word of mouth is spreading quickly and, like it or not, some people will see the high critical reviews and decide to see it for that reason alone. So it should have good staying power through new years and beyond after the usual suspects see it multiple times.

Did you call me old! I'm the youngest poster on this board probably. I was speaking in terms of Star Wars appealing to more people than HP. And I grew up reading HP and saw those movies when they came out. Just not at release day.

My 2nd viewing wasn't even close to full, although it was middle of the afternoon. I was still surprised. Maybe 25-30 people.

reports are today is pretty damn full, but there is lots of availability for tomorrow (one of the big travel days)

a lot of the pent up demand has been met between last night and today; plus lots of people preordered tickets for the coming days when they can see it with family and friends.

I went to the theater near the sugarland town center today for a 140 showing and the theater was like 1/3 full.

I also think a lot of showtimes were added after the initial round of sellouts. We were all surprised we could get tickets yesterday.

I went this morning.

The first show was at 10 am and it looked like a good crowd, I went to the 10:30 and at 10:00 there were 4 people in the theater. There was probably 25 for the show.

When leaving, the lobby looked pretty full and the parking lot was filling up. I'm sure that the afternoon shows were full especially with an early release for schools today.

My youngling really wants to go. I'm not sure she'll be able to sit and pay attention for a full 135, but we're going to try early in the morning on Saturday. May the force be with her. She's made it through Madagascar Penguins & the Good Dino.

Took my 6 1/2 year old son today. He's seen them all except for the most violent/scary parts of Episode III. He said this was now his favorite, followed by ROTJ and ESB. He loves Jar Jar so take his ratings with a grain of salt .

In my opinion there was nothing in TFA that rivaled the PG-13 scenes in EP III
