- FInally, according to Latino Review, the Boba Fett spin-off will NOT feature the cloned Boba Fett from the prequels. Rather, a complete stranger will kill that Boba Fett and take his armor and name. In other words, they're saying the Boba Fett from the original trilogy wasn't a clone, but a "new" character we'll meet in the spin-off who stole the original's identity. Which is kind of awesome, IMO, and resets that version of the character as something far more interesting than the cloned one from the prequels.

Not sure how I feel about his. Seems unnecessary.

Praise Jesus. This was the biggest tragedy of the entire prequel trilogy IMO. Of course then all the writers in the EU had to start retconning to make it make sense and now all that work is being undone....

Are they saying that someone killed the real Boba Fett as a child and has been pretending to be him ever since?

I think it's far more interesting to show how different the clone Boba is from the stormtroopers due to his father's influence as opposed to the stormtrooper training.

The prequel trilogy established that Boba Fett was a clone of Jango Fett (like all of the clone troopers) that Jango requested for himself as part of agreeing to be cloned. He raised him from a boy rather than having him go through the accelerated growth process like the other clones. It was a stupid origin that took away a lot of coolness from the previously mysterious badass Boba Fett of the original trilogy. The rumored movie is attempting to rectify that by having the clone Boba be killed and the Boba Fett mantle taken up by someone else prior to the events of Empire Strikes Back, which means the Boba from those movies was never the clone, but still a mysterious badass.

As I remember, the original "origin" story of Boba Fett was that he was just some guy who got his hands on some ancient mandolarian armor (the mandalorian society being long extinct). He's been retconned several times since to varying degrees, by movies, the Clone Wars cartoon, and the EU.

Yes but the clone retcon was the dumbest.

No, the Mandalorian society being alive but pacifists was the dumbest.

What exactly was badass about Boba Fett in ESB/ROTJ? It's not like he actually captured Han Solo, he just was able to figure out that they headed to Cloud City.

The only time we see him in combat, he's defeated by a blind, bumbling Han Solo.

The orignal Boba Fett story was that he was a "Journeyman Protector" named Jaster Mereel on a world named Concord Dawn who murdered some dude in cold blood and got outlawed, thus becoming Boba Fett.

When the prequels came out and he turned out to be a Jango clone, Jaster Mereel was retconned to being Jango Fett's Mandalorian mentor, whose ship Jango was flying around in until he lost it while escaping the prison planet Oovo IV on a bounty mission in which he first encountered fellow bounty hunter Zam Wessell, who he would later employ to try and kill Padme Amidala.

With his ship destroyed, he ended up stealing a modified Firespray from the prison hangar - destroying the other models in the process - and renaming it Slave I.

This! I thought it had been announced EU wasn't being referenced in Ep VII? IF so, why are we assuming Ben Skywalker is even a character in the film?

Fett was badass because most of us met him in the horrific Star Wars Christmas Special in a cartoon where he seems like a good guy, then totally gets the upper hand on Luke and also rides a dinosaur.

In Empire Strikes Back, he's the only bounty hunter Vader talks to (no disintegrations!), he outsmarts Solo, when Solo has outsmarted the Imperials (also hiding in the garbage stream), he's got bad-ass armor with a jet pack and Wookie braids (scalps). He has an awesome ship. His toy had a missile launcher that had to be recalled after kids were shooting their eyes out with it and before Han gets the lucky shot it, he's going toe to toe with Luke friggin Skywalker.

As for why Boba Fett being seen a badass, I think it's a combination of the following:

-cool looking costume
-not being intimidated by Darth Vader like everyone else
-mysterious

But Han Solo blows Fett outta the water in the badass department. He wears a cool costume in ESB, he gets it in with Leia, and he freaking shoots at Darth Vader when he sees him.

Re: Ben Skywalker - Ha, I had no idea that was even the name of Luke's son in the EU. I guess it was only natural to assume Luke would name him after Obi-Wan. Either way, I was just repeating what Latino Review said. My guess is they were speculating on the name, seeing as it's likely a no-brainer.

Speaking of, yes, Latino Review is one of the best at what they do. They're one of most accurate scoop sites on the internet. That being said, again, just reminder that none of this info is confirmed. It's basically a done deal that there will be a Boba Fett spin-off movie. But whether or not this ends up being the actual plot is far from confirmed.

Every time I heard "Boba Fett spin-off", I think of Boba Fett moving to Los Angeles to try and become an actor.

I'm kind of hesitant about the idea of a Boba Fett movie. As an above poster mentioned, he's kind of just this bounty hunter with a cool suit and helmet. But to carry a movie, we'd have to see a lot more of his face. I wonder if they'd kind of give him the Iron Man treatment in terms of how they handle his abilities and film his combat - especially the face in the suit stuff.

Edit: I do remember liking his fight on the landing pad in the prequels, though.

Same here. Truth be told, I'd rather none of these spin-off / non-main-trilogy movies focus on already-established characters. I especially have no desire to see a Yoda movie or a Han Solo movie, both of which are heavily rumored. At least Boba Fett provides enough mystery to fill in the blanks with a somewhat interesting story, I guess.

I completely understand not wanting these spin-off movies to interfere in "present day" with Episode VII, VIII and IX. But doing prequel movies for many of the main characters isn't the answer, either. Again, from a studio perspective, I get why you'd want that brand recognition. It's safe sticking with these characters. But it's STAR WARS. No matter what story you tell, people will show up.

I just hate how these spin-off movies went from potentially being opportunities for interesting directors to tell cool, unique, off-the-beaten-path stories in the Star Wars universe - to fill-in-the-back-story, character prequels for Boba Fett, Yoda, and Han. Just seems so counter-productive.

I want to see an X-wing movie(s). Those are some of the best EU books.

I hope they don't make a Yoda movie, it would ruin the mystery.

Boba Fett and Han could make a good spinoff movie (especially if they were the antagonist and protagonist in the same movie). You could make it a sort of origin story for both.

Completely agree with this. Maybe a film about the underpinnings of the criminal world on Coruscant, or even an Old Republic story.

Agree with all of the above, including the idea of a Han-Boba movie having potential. The standalone origin tales, though ... I guess I'll wait and see.

X-wing definitely fits that bill. No characters from the original trilogy except for Wedge Antilles, who had very limited face time. And it has great new characters. But that is EU and we know there is an aversion there. They could do an all new and original X-wing though I guess with the same concepts just new characters and stories.

A couple of my favorite EU books were the Tales from Mos Eisly Cantina and Tales from Jabba's Palace. How they took all of those characters and spun stories together that told their stories, but were also part of a larger story was some fun reads.

Something like that could make for a fun movie. Not interpreting those stories exactly, but something of that nature.

I have an idea for a Boba Fett movie, actually.

Think a Star Wars version of Mel Gibson's "Payback" (the theater version, not the surprisingly terrible Director's Cut). They could even steal that movie's tagline: "Get ready to root for the bad guy."

The basic story would be an established, veteran Fett getting double-crossed on a bounty contract, then spending the rest of the movie hunting down and killing progressively higher and higher members of the organization until he gets paid.

The key elements, here, are you let Fett be a bad guy, you don't do an origin story, and there is no ridiculous romance/befriending a child/learning to love nonsense.

Personally, for these "non main story" movies, I would like to see some normal films just set in the star wars world.

Such as a gritty crime drama could be interesting. Or a political machinations type movie. Just having it be set in that world could be interesting enough, ie aliens, planets that aren't earth, foreign technologies.

I would rather not have every off movie just be about a non main character.

Count me amongst those who don't care about a Boba Fett spinoff movie. Boba Fett is a pretty cool character, but I know exactly as much about him as I want or need to. Or at least I did, before episode 2.

Either that or a rom-com about a government contractor who finds love while working on the construction of a large spherical space station only to have it all come crashing down around him in the film's final act.

I'll call Nicholas Sparks and pitch him this idea today!
