if Vince Young was the pilot, the plane would take off.
Fran's plane would certainly not take off.
It will take off. Say the the conveyor is roliing backward at 10 mph, the wheels are rolling forward at 10 mph. So it is sitting still, but soon as forward thrust from the engine pull sthe plane forward, the only thing different is that the wheels of the plane roll faster than if it was on a stationary surface. The conveyor is moot

What if the conveyor is moving in the same direction as the plane? Will the plane take off any faster?
Lets define there being 0 wind speed because the problem doesn’t state any.
Lets define the speed of the airplane in relation to the ground. V1
Lets define the speed of the conveyor in relation to the ground. V2
Using these definitions: The problem states that V2=-V1.
Wheel speed (V3) is equal to the difference between the airplane speed and the speed of the surface they are setting on.
V3=V1-V(surface) where V(surface) is the surface they set on. For the ground V(surface)=0 thus making V3=V1.
For a stationary plane:
V1=0
V2=0
V3=0
For a plane moving at 10mph in relation to the ground:
V1=10
V2=-10
V3=V1- (-10) = 20
This trend will continue in that V2, conveyor speed, equals the opposite of V1, the plane speed. Therefore V1 can increase regardless of V2 and V2 is DEPENDANT on V1. Also V3 equals TWICE V1.
Since airplane wheels are nowhere near their failure point at takeoff speeds, it is logical to conclude that they will not fail at TWICE the normal takeoff speed. Therefore, the plane will takeoff, but the wheels will wear out twice as fast.

Yes - multiply speed by length of plane and divide by 60 seconds. Thats how much faster.

Political Science Majors: The true reason the plane will take off is because Bush wanted to go to war for oil.
An airplane has "lift" because its wings are shaped such that the velocity of air above the wings is greater than the velocity of air below the wings. This creates a "vacuum"” above the wings causing the plane to lift. I do not believe a plane could take off if the wind velocity was zero (would be the case if it was on a conveyor belt).

I'm no where near an engineer. Doesn't a plane need wind moving over it's wing to take off? If the converor makes the plane "run in place" so to say, is there not any wind moving over the wings? If not, how does it take off?
