ok, for the moran losers out there:

picture the conveyor belt in the grocery store.
can you place a toy plane on said conveyor belt.
with the belt moving, can you hold the plane in place. i hope so or don't have the strength of a new born baby.

Now do you think you can push the plane against the conveyor belt so that it can travel in the oposite direction of the conveyor belt. Yes, you can do it.

Now extrapolate ( yes a big word, but look it up ) that so that the toy plane is a real plane and your hand is really the engine. Same concept. The planes engine can push the plane the other direction even if the conveyor belt is turning the wheels on the plane faster than they would be turning if not on a conveyor belt. Once plane is fast enough, the plane takes off.

Wow. How did this get to 27 pages. I won't read it all, but I'll just point out that it has nothing to do with the plane's speed on the ground, but the relative speed of the air around the plane.

A plane could take off from a dead stop if the wind was strong enough. Given normal wind conditions though, there is no extra air moving across the plane's wing if it's essentially sitting still, which it would be doing. Thus it can't take off.

I'm sure this has been repeated.

If we get to page 50 will VideoAg98 leave "for realz" this time?

On another note...

if a seaplane is trying to take off heading away from the shore, and the tide is comming in...will it make a sound?

The plane is not and cannot be held "sitting still." It is in fact moving forward regardless of what the belt is doing.

THis question should be posed at all New Student Converences.

If you can't get it right, you are placed in the college of Liberal Arts.

Obviously, the plane isn't going to take off!

But really, I'm no engineer, but I know enough physics to know that with almost no rolling friction, that the plane is going to take off. It pushes off of the air, not the ground to get up to speed.

All planes have to have conveyor belts to take off. How else can their wheels provide the propulsive force to move them...

If the conveyer belt went 1000 mph, and the maximum forward thrust speed were only 200 mph, would the plane lose ground on the belt?

I dont know much about planes....is it moot because the planes wheels arent connected to a drive shaft, and therefore rotate freely?

If so, I get it...
