I asked my boyfriend (Aerospace Engineering master's student here at A&M) if the plane would take off. He says no, absolutely not. For the plane to take off it must have enough air speed. In this scenario, the air speed will essentially be nothing so the plane will not take off. If the plane could take off in this situation, it would make taking off on an ocean carrier a whole lot easier.

Your boyfriend is assuming the plane gains speed from the wheels. The plane will not be held stationary. It will be moving forward

I think the conveyor is moot. The plane will take off.
And the whole verbiage of wheels/conveyor is also moot. A plane does not need wheels at all. Has anyone brought up the seaplane which takes off without wheels but instead leaves a body of water?

mkf - good to see you keeping up the good fight. I think that what needs to be explained to non-believers is that if you took the wings off a plane, it wouldnt fly, but would still move forward, despite the treadmill. If they can wrap their heads around that, they will soon be able to figure out that it will fly.

simple terms:
conveyor speed : -x
turbine pushes plane forward at speed y:
wheel speed = y+x (forget about wheel size, etc)
when y becomes > speed necessary for takeoff, the place takes off.
At that point the conveyor can be traveling at -y speed and the wheels will be turning at 2y.
However, plane is still traveling fast enough to take off.
