The engine propels the car - the wheels on a car are moot.

I have never claimed the wheels to be frictionless.

I live in the same world you do.

You just don't understand as much.

I'm sorry - I live in the REAL WORLD - where wheels make things go and conveyor belts move things.

I bet a conveyor belt moved my delicious breakfast down into a box to be shipped to the store at some point.

Is my breakfast moot?

Brian. If you put a plane on a conveyor and turned it on, the plane would move along with the conveyor. However, you can easily counteract this force using the thrust of the plane's engine.

Brian, in a car, the wheels are connected mechanically to the engine (don't talk to me about the clutch).. in an airplane they are not.

The wheels on Brian's Camry are moot.

Here's where you are wrong, moron. The wheels don't make a plane go, they allow it to go!

BIG EFFIN' DIFFERENCE!!

What if I was in a boat and it was traveling against a current that was the same speed.

I wouldn't be moving - and if I put wings on my boat I wouldn't take off.

gasoline = 14.7:1

it was nothing personal...I just found it funny because a friend of mine mentioned combusting water the other day...thinking it was actually possible.

It seems my posts about aircraft engines were all ignored earlier in this post and the original "will it take off" post.

I can see the answer going either way depending on what speed the conveyor is trying to match, considering mechanical failure as a possibility, and not neglecting rolling resistance of an inflated rubber tire while the conveyor would try to make x = x+y while y!=0.

Will this thread make it to 88 pages?

Brian, you can't assume that the conveyor is trying to match the wheel speed.

it is never stated in the problem...and would be really really difficult to achieve.

the conveyor may also be matching the ground speed of the plane. in which case x = ground speed of the plane y= -x and the wheel speed = 2x. Which is do-able.

OMG...how did I miss this thread....

If the plane is sitting on a conveyer belt moving at the same speed of the plane, isn't it obvious that the plane will NOT BE MOVING!!!!!ONE1!!!1!!ELEVEN1!!!

Brian2003,

Take it from me (a guy who's opinion you take as gospel)... the plane moves forward, even though the wheels spin twice as fast, and it takes off.

If they conveyor isn't matching the wheel speed of the plane then what the hell is it matching???? How do you determine how fast a plane is going on the ground, if you don't do it by the speed of it's wheels?
Husky Boy Jr.

Airspeed? When planes take of, they are still moving even though their wheels aren't turning anymore.

I see there are some really thick skulls around here. Wheel speed has little to no effect on the overall speed of the aircraft. Wheels are really just supporting the plane during take off and landing. That's it.

It doesn't matter how fast the wheels are turning, the engines on the aircraft will accelerate the plane at the same rate, regardless of a conveyor.
PedroJack07
How long do you want to ignore this user?

At what point does the wheel speed become greater than the airspeed and allow the plane to actually move forward?

None of you make sense, the wheels may not be powering the plane but they are allowing it to roll forward. If something is making the wheels move backwards at the same rate the plane is moving forwards it isn't going to go anywhere
