Do seriously need to explain that 5th grade math problem to you?

Here is the original friggin question (cut and pasted from the OP):

quote:
If a plane is traveling at takeoff speed on a conveyor belt, and the belt is matching that speed in the opposite direction, can the plane take off?

Where in that question does it state that the conveyor speed is RELATIVE TO THE AIRPLANE?

And the plane flys because the gravitational pull of the sun on it lifts it into the air!!!!

I'm sorry for exposing your ignorance but I will explain it in terms so you can understand.

If a car is going 50 mph relative to stationary and it is on a belt going 50 mph relative to stationary, they are boing going the same speed. This means that the wheels on the car are spinning at 100mph.

I'm not going to go back and read what has been posted - but has anyone pointed out that since the plane was moving forward - the conveyor obviously wasn't matching its speed????

I busted MythBusters bust. Pwned.

AT TAKE OFF SPEED RELATIVE TO WHAT? If the plane is moving at takeoff speed relative to the ground, it will take off no matter what.

Actually, in this math problem, the wheels are not moving at all...

Look, if the truck took off before the plane got rolling at all the cloth would most likely have torn. Still, assuming it were strong enough the plane would not move backwards on the cloth. The wheels would start spinning and it would stay in place, sort of like someone removing a tablecloth from a fully set table and all the plates staying in place. It would then start moving and take off. Why is this concept so hard for you? They proved it three different ways last night.

This kind of reminds me of convincing nonbelievers that there is a God. God could appear right before their eyes and still they would doubt.

Sorry, this is not even closely related. When you can prove that God exists, get back to me. That the plane will always take off is provable.

Thats why I said the plane was off, I would assume the brakes would be on.

Sigh. Even if the brakes were on and you could get the cloth moving backwards to 25 mph without tearing and then start the plane up it would take off. They had like 2000 feet of it. The plane would have taken off no problem even if starting going backwards.

So if the truck took off the opposite direction with the plane sitting on the top - the plane should still take off - assuming the truck is going greater than 20 MPH.

That would be weird though - I guess it would kind of just hover and then you would have to turn the engines on.

The plane took off.

Motion of the tires is irrelevant to the airplane's ground speed. Airplanes are driven by props/jet engines. Power is not transmitted to the tires.

This thread is moot.
