Vandy and Auburn finish 4th in their divisions and are ranked #5 and #6 in RPI.

This year it's reflecting whether you played UT directly and / or played lots of teams that played UT. Check and check. Add UGA and UF to this list as well.

They both have 5 conference series losses, and Vandy is toting a 14-16 conference record. They are out of hosting as a top 8. Vandy will be a 2 seed (possibly a 3 seed).

In no particular order, it seems we have 3 of the 8 top seeds secured.
  • Tennessee
  • Stanford
  • Oregon State

I'm sure Maryland and Virginia Tech will get top eights as well...in spite of their #101 and #55 strengths of schedule, respectively. So that's 5 of the 8. Who else? I'm guessing Miami and Louisville each get one and the 8th spot is up for grabs (Auburn, Wake, A&M, and Southern Miss are candidates.)

I think the PAC get 2 the SEC get 2 The ACC get 3 and The last spot comes down to conference tourneys with
MD, Frog, GaSouthern,DBU, Texas State, Southern miss all in the mix MD has the inside lane but 2&Que opens the door for another team to get a top 8 seed.
There are a lot of quality teams and marquee programs that will be 2 or even 3 seeds

I wish I had your confidence that the committee will totally scrap RPI this year after using it as the #1 criterion in every previous year. Granted, the about-face would be totally in character for them. They are nothing if not inconsistent.

We are the second best team in the SEC. If the SEC gets 2 in the top 8 we are one of them.

oh yes, it's a great list of 2-seeds this year:

Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Tech, UCLA, Arizona, and several Big 12 teams

perhaps another way to look at...

if A&M is not in the top 8...which team replaces them?

I guess Southern Miss or Notre Dame

The 1 seed who gets one of those teams as their 2 seed and Ole Miss as their 3 seed is going to be pleased.

Teams ranked 10-20 in RPI have major flaws in their resumes. Notre Dame and Virginia are probably both decent options, but you have to consider the committee will have a hard time choosing 4 ACC teams while only giving one to the top ranked SEC.

Also, if you notice that outside of a flawed DBU, there does not appear to be a solid hosting team other than the Aggies in the state of Texas.

8-2 conference series record
19-11conference game record
16-11 Q1 record
#22 SOS
2nd place finish in the toughest conference

That is a National Seed resume.

Tennessee, Oregon State, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Miami, Stanford, Louisville, and Southern Miss.

Those would be your 8 national seeds as of this moment, in my humble opinion.

this is a good point.

A&M, LSU, and Arkansas are all lagging in the RPI --- lower than would be expected --- and they have something in common:

none of them played Tennessee

Yet.....LSU by sweeping Vandy wins the UT sweepstakes as a four seed in the SEC tourney.

If we aren't a national seed, it's a hose job. Our resume does not match the RPI. RPI is whack this year, and the committee would be stupid to follow it blindly

How did A&M drop 3 in RPI after taking 2/3 against Ole Miss on the road? I thought road wins counted a lot more. Wasn't Ole Miss' RPI in the 30's?

Ole Miss actually rose 2 spots by losing the series to us at their place.

Our 2013 team had one of, if not the, worst resume of any SEC team to make the tournament in quite a while. Our 2015 team didn't get a national seed because they gave a couple of them out to conference champions. You win some, you lose some.

If we don't get a national seed this year, we'll hardly be the first SEC division champion not to.

RPI formula needs to be tweaked. A victory should never result in a drop in RPI. The wins versus subpar competition need to be weighted. Defeating a power program (highly ranked) receives more reward than defeating a basement dweller but never punished.
Example (point system below is basic to illustrate my point)
Beat a top 50 team receive 1.5 points
Beat a 50-100 team receive 3/4point
Beat 100-150 team receive 1/2 point
Beat 150+ team receive 1/4 point

Something to that affect.
Losses on the road to subpar teams vs losses on the road to top teams should also be weighted. Inversely as the above system. More points lost for subpar losses on the road.
Losses at home should just be losses.

Tennessee's pull on the RPI is a big problem. The formula needs to be tweaked. It seems to me that all these other teams are getting lifted up because they played Tennessee. Maybe they should throw out the highest and lowest winning percentage opponent of every team or something, so that one team can't skew the results so much.

Did our actual RPI drop or just our RPI rank?

Too many on here just can't seem to distinguish between the two.

It is not the rating but the actual RPI score that is leading to movements. Note how tightly bunched 16-26 are currently (based on Boyds World Pseduo-RPIs):

Rank Rating Team
1 0.628 Tennessee
2 0.623 Oregon State
3 0.603 Vanderbilt
4 0.598 Georgia
5 0.597 Auburn
6 0.597 Miami, Florida
7 0.596 Notre Dame
8 0.595 Oklahoma State
9 0.595 Louisville
10 0.595 Georgia Southern
11 0.594 Dallas Baptist
12 0.593 Virginia Tech
13 0.589 Florida
14 0.588 Maryland
15 0.587 Virginia
16 0.585 Florida State
17 0.585 Gonzaga
18 0.585 Louisiana State
19 0.584 Clemson
20 0.584 Stanford
21 0.584 Texas
22 0.584 Texas A&M
23 0.581 Wake Forest
24 0.580 North Carolina
25 0.580 Oregon
26 0.580 Wofford

Maybe the solution is by limiting it to 2 digits going to the 1/1000's place is the problem if you rounded results it would be
1st UT
2nd Beavers
T-3rd Vandy,Georgia,Auburn, hurricane,Irish Okie lite, Louisville ,Ga So

Most people are following the RPI rank since that is what matters.

Folks need to be less emotionally invested in the daily swings of RPI. I check the RPI daily too, but people need to understand any RPI up to about this point in the season has been entirely irrelevant to what will happen on selection day.

This board has worked itself into an absolute frenzy over the past month and it really didn't need to.

Please, somebody explain to me how Maryland, with 3 Q4 losses, only THREE Q1 wins and a SOS of 101 can have an RPI of #3????

I really am just trying to understand.
