Man if Pena could return to 2022 October form that would be very nice.

2025 lineup

Altuve
Alvarez
Walker
Peredes
Diaz
McCormick
Pena
Doubon/Carantini (depending on who is DH vs LF)
Meyers

1-6 is really strong if McCormick can return to form. I think it's only a very small downgrade from last year's full health roster. McCormick may start in CF while we let rookies battle it out in RF
I suspect they are hoping Dezenzo can win the LF job. Chas maybe you can hope gets his **** together but there's just no way you can have Jake and Dubon starting regularly.

Thought this was interesting. Does not bode well for Bregman getting his OBP back up.

Makes sense. His power isn't significant enough to be afraid of throwing him strikes. Think he lived off the fear of 2018-2019 for several years and now teams know he isn't that guy.

Count me in as a guy who doesn't want Bregman back at all. I think he's a ticking time bomb about to explode.

He's been an OBP machine over the years because although his average hasn't been above 270 for 5 years, he walked 1 out of every 5 pa's. Then in 22 and 23 1 out of every 8 pa's. Then last year 1 out of every 15 pa's.

His OPS was 768. Singleton's was 707. Bregman is not anyone I want to throw money at or a long contract. I think his next team id screwed

Agreed.

Curious why Bregman accepted an extension in his prime, but now decided to chase maximum money?

I don't blame him, but he should have bet on himself when he was younger and mashing.

Now he's in decline, with some health issues and questions over his longevity in the game

Are we even sure he's good for the long term throwing from third to first? That was scary this year and I'm not convinced that is gone for good.

Secrets out. Now everyone knows what he does with belt high strikes...Pops them up to the edge of the infield dirt.

If I'm him I'd be pushing for the Red Sox. I don't even know if that's the highest money but I think it's the only place he can be successful. The Yankees would be a disaster.

Emo Puss Pressly of 2024 for Mullins? Sold.

I wouldn't count Singleton out just yet. Our team is stacked with righties and he's one of the few lefties we have in reserve for situational play

Santander would be an awesome fit as he bats left and plays RF. We have a lot of money coming off the books in 2026 so maybe you just bite the bullet and go for it in 2025.

Mullins is OK if he could be acquired in a reasonable trade. Bats left, but nothing too flashy recently at the plate (still a large improvement over Meyers)

I wish we could get a better OBP kind of guy though, seems like we lack in that department after losing Tucker

He can only play 1B or DH and we're full up there.

Walker hits righties well so Singleton isn't needed.

So who's on the bench this year?

Dezenzo, Salazar, Caratini, Singleton and who else?
AggiEE

Could play him at 1B during Walker's rest days, but I guess Carantini fills that role better as he can also bat left but play catcher. Maybe you're right. I just wish we had more lefties on the team

Some free agent OFers. Gonna need some bargain bin finds given current payroll

Santander
Teoscar
Hays
Cahna
Profar
Winker
Duvall
Grichuk

It's going to depend on match up but I would assume we add land handed or switch hitting outfielder. On most days 3 of Dezenzo, Meyers, Chas, and the new player play the majority. Whoever is the odd man out there plus Dubon, Salazar or Caratini (depends on if Caratini is still on the roster), and… Kessinger or Whitcomb. I'd really like to keep Caratini for his veteran leadership and switch hitting bat off the bench.

Edit: Maybe Hummel… not a ton of great option.

Teoscar had nearly the same OPS vs righties as Santander did last year so I think he should still be in the conversation.

Vs righties, our biggest holes are SS (Pena .663 OPS in 2024) and CF (Meyers .603). Altuve and Paredes also have pretty decent sized splits but are at least above .700 OPS against righties. Chas was also bad against everything last year but historically has hit righties ok. We talk a lot about platooning Meyers but Pena would ideally be in one as well. Unfortunately it's a lot harder to find a lefty SS than OF.

Wonder if we shopped Carantini there?

Ok - there are some articles out there from about a month ago that link the Astros and White Sox having a talk or two about Luis Robert.

Here's the question: With Parades at 3B and the signing today of Walker at 1B, is there a world where you include Cam Smith in a trade for Robert?

No, not at all. Smith is part of your future. And Robert isn't worth what he was a year or 2 ago.

Negative.

I would love LuBob but I think we'd be better off spending prospect capital that isn't Smith and on a player that's in pre arb or arb.

The Astros have been talking to them about Robert for a couple years now.

Smith should be virtually untouchable given the state of the farm system. We haven't had a position player prospect of his caliber since Kyle Tucker.

We need him to become a star/impact player of the next gen Astros.

Bregman has a lot of intangibles I'll miss. He seemed like a secret pitching coach. He'd contribute to meetings on the mound with our pitchers. Or say something quick when giving the ball back. If the Astros picked something up on the opposing pitcher it always seemed to start with Bregman. He also has a great eye at the plate. Even when struggling he knew the zone very well.
