Reading rumors on Texans message boards that Chip Kelly may be in play as the Texans OC.

Only reference I can find is Walters Football which generally has marginal info and player evals but thought it interesting.

Quote:

The Houston Texans mutually parted ways with offensive coordinator George Godsey after their playoff loss to the Patriots, and afterward, they announced that head coach Bill O'Brien would basically run the offense without hiring a new coordinator. However, sources say there is a name to keep an eye on as joining the Texans staff as an offensive assistant, and that is none other than Chip Kelly. The pro-style offense of O'Brien seems like an odd fit for Kelly and his college spread system, but Kelly and O'Brien are close friends with a lot of mutual respect for each other's football knowledge.

i don't believe this for some reason. ... i guess it's just hard to believe that Chip has friends.

In trying to find more info I actually saw other news references to them being friends that go back 2-3 years.

I just watched some tape on Nathan Peterman. I really like his throwing motion and he gets the ball out QUICK. His shovel passes are a thing of beauty. He also can run pretty well too. It looks like his talent would translate much better to the NFL than someone like Mahomes. Plus, beating the eventual National Championship winning team doesn't look too bad either.

Look for Welker to be joining the Texans staff..

Kelly and OB have been friends since the early 90's when Kelly was at John Hopkins I believe and OB was at Brown. Both grew up in New England also. A little smoke there but tap the breaks a bit. LONG way to go if it were to happen. This is the second time this fire has been lit

Welker has plenty of experience from being a real coach on the field during his playing days.

wait-a-minute...Larry Izzo kept his job?

the hype of his coaching ability far, far exceeds the actual results on the field

You do realize this is Izzo's first time to be in charge? He's only be an assistant before the job here.

When will the Texans get a kicker that can kick it out of end zone on kickoffs? Seems like a regular occurrence today and Novak can barely get it to the goal line
bilbobag

That was going to be Ka'imi Fairbairn. He was leading to get the job last year until he got hurt and they put him on IR

To be fair, Novak was banged up towards the end of the season. Also, he was responsible for like 90% of our points so we can't really complain

oh hell yes we can complain about our kicker being responsible for 90% of our points. in fact, that's pretty much the bulk of Texan fan complaints this past season.

That's not really Novak's fault though. He was one of very few players doing his job well

McNair hopes to lock up DeAndre Hopkins, A.J. Bouye

Bob McNair expects competition at quarterback

Quote:

"The challenge is what can we do with what we got," he said. "We'll still probably look at a young quarterback as we go into the draft. It's a question of what's available."
Quote:

(on Osweiler) "It's up to him to meet the challenge," McNair said. "He has to step up. We need better performance out of the position."

McNair said Osweiler would have to play better and that he expects Savage to compete hard for the starting job.
Quote:

CBS Sports' Joel Corry expects impending free agent CB A.J. Bouye to command "at least Janoris Jenkins money" on his new contract.

Jenkins received $12.5 million annually and $28.8 million guaranteed from the Giants as the league's seventh-highest-paid corner last offseason. He answered with the best year of his career. Bouye is nearly three full years younger than Jenkins and doesn't turn 26 until August. Youth is the biggest thing working in his favor. Bouye is one of the top free agents set to hit the market.

http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/02/03/colin-kaepernick-ditching-49ers-cant-happen-for-another-month/

Quote:

Kaepernick's exit has been almost a foregone conclusion since October, when his contract was revised and allows him or the 49ers to terminate the upcoming final season of his deal, when he's owed a $14.5 million base salary.

Kaepernick has not officially opted out but he is still "expected" to do so, ESPN reported Friday.

Pats tried to deal Collins to Texans before trading LB to Browns
Quote:

The Patriots asked for frustrated receiver DeAndre Hopkins in a potential trade for Collins -- offensive building block in need of an extension for defensive building block in need of an extension. That was a non-starter for the Texans, even with Hopkins battling uneven quarterback play.

The other offer the Patriots spent weeks researching: Veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph for Collins. New England loves him. Though intriguing, Joseph is so valuable to Houston that the team would not part with him.

the situation with Hopkins is an interesting one.

it's possible that he has already had his best season in the NFL (2015).

he was not good in 2016. Now maybe 70-80% of that can be blamed on the QB, but as discussed many times last year, too often Hopkins couldn't beat man coverage --- couldn't get separation. And more than likely Osweiler will be the guy throwing to him again in 2017.

on the flipside though...Fuller was a major disappointment in 2016 after the first month of the season. With his granite hands, he doesn't look like a #1 WR

My thing with Hopkins is that they had no real receiving threats outside of the TEs. Fuller was his best defender and then nobody. Teams could plan around Hopkins and be OK.

What was the biggest change to the offense from 2015 (his best season) and 2016? There's your answer for his drop-off

Even in 2015, Hopkins played well with 4+ starting QBs. It's time to stop pushing the narrative that his failure of a 2016 season was ALL due to Brock Osweiler, because it wasn't. Yes, Brock had something to do with it, but Hopkins was just fine with mediocre play in 2015

Quote:

s it that he passed the ball 40 times and averaged fewer than 5 yards per attempt? [He's thrown 40-plus times for fewer than 200 yards four times this year no player since 1950 (at least) has posted two such games in a campaign.]

Perhaps it's the fact that he didn't complete a pass longer than 20 yards.

The three interceptions, each pick somehow worse than the one that preceded it, might be a good place to go to as well.

Osweiler wasn't just of zero value to the Texans on Saturday he was of negative value. He significantly hurt his team's chances to win a playoff game.

"mediocre" ?

It wasn't all Brock. The line wasn't very good and the coaching on the offensive side of the ball was pretty suspect as well. I'm not really interested in laying too much blame on Hopkins though. He dropped a few more balls than he normally does, but much of his struggles were due to poor QB play.

I'm not sure Hopkins has ever been considered a big "separation" guy. He is really good at catching a contested ball WHEN YOU GIVE HIM A CHANCE. Last year Hoyer and co. did a good job at throwing the ball where only Deandre could get it. Brock was terrible this year and consistently threw it right at the DB. Deandre had to fight over or through the defender and often the play ended in an interception. If a QB throws the ball on time and accurately it will appear that the receiver has "separated" from his man....wait to long and the player is covered again. Brock is only good when he is hitting a wide open player because he can't really place his throws and he has horrible timing/feel for the game. I dont think I saw him "throw open" a single player this year. He is basically the anti-Tom Brady.
