Bob McNair is not very smart for keeping Rick Smith around. RS is costing him millions. He is horribly inexperienced and ignorant in football decision making. They've got $107 million in cap space since they rolled $50 million of unused space from 2016 to 2017. The 89% cap floor is going to eventually be an issue for them. Trading and cutting is a way to get picks, burn some cap space they can't spend anyway, and do so in a manner that doesn't lock them into anything beyond 2017 (which again, they can't spend anyway). The guy can't play for dick, so no reason to keep him.

I thought so at first but after someone explained their cap situation, it's genius by Cleveland.
Cleveland has a crapload of picks this year and next. The downside of that is if they really do their job well then in 3-4 years as they mature they will have a crapload of FA and won't have as much cap space to keep them all. If I understand what they are doing it's the basketball cap philosophy being applied to a much larger roster and draft. Will be interesting to see if it works.
What are the odds Rick Smith picks up Osweiler on the cheap as a backup once he's released?

I only marginally follow this, so would someone explain why you trade for a guy then release him? I'm guessing they got something they really wanted from the Texans. But aren't they on the hook for the guaranteed part of BO's contract?
There is a salary floor so it was money they had to spend anyway...and they have a ton to spend this year. You could argue that they should keep him on the roster and see how he does, but with all of the picks they had last year and will have this year, they need the roster spot.91AggieLawyer said:

They are getting picks to spend money they pretty much have to spend anyway, and with this deal, they do so in a manner that doesn't lock them into bad deals for 2018 and forward which is what they are really building for. It seems to be a sharp move.
