Neighbor got tickets to an Arlington show and they were directed to Seatgeek instead of Ticketmaster. Had never seen that before. They were in and out pretty quickly.
Seatgeek is a third party reseller.

You can nearly always go pick up high demand tickets without waiting on a third party site.

Seatgeek does both. I bought Billy Joel tickets from seat geek and the tickets were straight from the box office.

amazing that Seatgeek was able to pull off the onsale so much better than TM.

huh, yeh looks like they've partnered with a few teams and venues.

Nothing like TM though.

I did the metallica s&m tickets, which was through TM. This was an onsale event that had people buying from not only all 50 states, but literally every corner of the globe at the same time (30+ countries represented at that show).
While there were many complaints of bots getting so many tickets (which justified a second member only show), it didn't take long. I had tickets within 20 min. if I recall.

So they clearly have the capability.

Seatgeek had similar issues that TM did - most people didn't get in to buy until hours after the start.

But it was also only handling 2 venues while TM was handling 10+.

Seatgeek also wasn't having to verify the accounts or events (TM verified fan codes had to match the account and event). Doesn't seem like much, but still takes resources for each and every buyer.

Definitely wasn't aware that venues have started doing this either. I had assumed my neighbor decided to skip the TM mess and were okay with paying whatever it took on SG to get a decent ticket. I heard they got floor seats for what I was seeing at face value elsewhere. So I got curious and tried the Arlington link myself, which took me to SG.

so we're using TM's own "verified fan" requirements as an excuse for why they couldn't do an onsale that didn't take 8 hours and result in timeout errors/getting kicked out of line?

anecdotally, I heard seatgeek was a MUCH smoother process. Obviously a smaller pool but TM should be able to scale this **** by now.

Tickets are on sale at a specific local time. The whole US tour doesn't just go on sale at the same time.

So that's 4 start times for all those venues for TM

Each city had 2-3 dates, so each hour you have roughly 20+ events.

Then when the first hour pushes over into the second hour, you have 40+ events active, etc, etc... I think in total there were 70 something TS events that Ticketmaster is handling. Plus all of their other events. Each one they are verifying the code matches the account and matches the event, sending text verification codes, etc...

For comparison, Seatgeek had 5 Taylor Swift events all day.

Not saying there's not a better way of doing things, but the number of unique users TM had to deal with was probably 100x that of SeatGeek.

That sounds like a lot, but in the age of modern computing, where cloud computing lets you scale to your hearts content, this should not come near the limits of something that can be handled.

Just got home from 3 day Billy Texas run. Good lord in heaven. The Austin show was the best of the three and that new Waterloo outdoor amphitheater is so great.

Very strong possibility now I'm headed back there this week for WEEN on Thursday and My Morning Jacket on Friday same venue. Ticket prices are pretty outrageous for both shows though. Guess it's part of the new normal.

Add me to the list of people furious about the Taylor Swift sh/t show. I didn't even want tickets. I was just trying to help a super sweet family friend get their daughter tickets since I had access to the Capital One pre-sale.

There were 6 of us trying to get tickets on Wednesday to shows in Houston and Arlington. Only one was able to get tickets. And it literally took her ALL day. She didn't get through the line and complete her purchase until after 5 pm, after logging in at 930. The only tickets I've heard anyone get are to the Sunday night NRG show.

The Capital One presale was cancelled and rescheduled for yesterday. So I had to wait to try my presale code. There weren't a lot of tickets but there were some. But you could only get 1, 2, or 3. There were no 4, 5, or 6 purchase options despite the max purchase per person being 6 tickets.

I tried to put tickets in my cart at least a dozen times. Then I would get the "verifying" wheel of death that would sometimes spin for minutes. My account was frozen during that time. Every single attempt, I got an error message saying "sorry, someone beat you to these seats" only to exit out and see those same damn seats still showing as available. I tried for probably 30-45 min to get 2-3 tickets and never passed the "verifying" stage. Finally, there were no more tickets showing up as available, and the whole website locked up. I had to exit out and couldn't get back in. Today the website says there are no more presale tickets available.

The friends who didn't get tickets had problems with their presale codes being denied. This was after waiting all day to get through the queue.

I was actually surprised that there were "reasonably" priced tickets. We were shooting for $200-$250 each (before fees) and there were tickets showing at that price point. The most expensive ticket I saw was $599, but I had the selection filtered based on my specific presale.

Also, fees in general have gotten out of control. My friend who got tickets said they were actually lower than she expected. I was expecting the worst because my son wanted to go to the 6A marching band state finals show last week. It was at the Alamodome, so you had to buy tickets through Ticketmaster.

A one day ticket was $20, but when I went to checkout, it added $13.16 in fees. That's a 66% markup! For a freaking high school band marching show where the vast majority of the attendees are parents/family members. The price gouging is ridiculous.

As a side note, how/why were some people pushed to Seat Geek? Was it completely random who was selected to complete their purchase on that site?

Edited to add: Seat Geek is the official ticketing provider of AT&T Stadium. That explains why the Arlington shows disappeared from the TM website. I was wondering why those shows weren't listed when I got in the queue yesterday.

i have absolutely no idea how someone could willingly pay the resale prices on stubhub to go sit in the nosebleeds in a giant echo chamber of a football stadium and be 500 yards away from the stage.

At that price, id rather go buy some nice speakers and watch on my TV at home

My daughter and her friend spent $900 each after fees for floor seats through ticket master, thanks Taylor $wift.

Again, I agree that they should have handled it better but scaling with cloud computing and load balancing and the like isn't as simple and turnkey as people think. It's not just "oh we need to rent more internet this week". TexAgs has a fraction of the traffic, with very little database activity, yet during big events it will still sometimes go down.

And a % of those fees are going to the artist -- Ticketmaster exists to be the scapegoat for these artists.

Can someone explain Taylor Swift to me? I see a decent pop artist, and I won't change the station if one of her songs comes on, although I don't normally ever listen to a station that would play one of her songs. Am I missing the Elvis of my kids' generation or is this a FOMO event? Are Taylor Swift tickets the Cabbage Patch Dolls of my kids' generation? Got to have them because everyone else is trying to get them.

Part of it is she started country, then went pop, and now her newest album is…edgier. She's gained more and more fans each year.
Broke the record for most Spotify single day streams when her newest album came out a few weeks ago.

Also, FOMO is probably playing a huge part of this with her fans.

I initially thought she was bubble gum pop, but I'm incredibly sexist and didn't actually listen to any of her songs/lyrics until Ryan Adams re-recorded 1989. Some of that stuff is pretty damn well written.

I love T Swizzy but this albums popularity surprised even me. Folklore was huge both commercially and critically, won Album of The Year at the Grammys. Evermore was the same, getting nominated but not winning. To me that (effectively) double album is her masterpiece. So those two should have given a reasonable expectation for the numbers this album would do. With no lead single we didn't even know what the album would sound like, so it was a bit of a surprise just how huge the numbers have been. Personally I like it but it's a mid Taylor album for me.

That's actually exactly how it should be, and one of the entire points of cloud computing. You literally rent server/database space and bandwidth on demand so that you can scale up for a big event and then scale back down for normal activity.

I'm not a fan because I was a little too old for her schtick when she first became popular. But women in their 30s like her for the nostalgia factor. And then there are young girls who still go crazy for her.

Considering some of the skanky performers out there, I think it's great that there is a young(ish) artist who actually cares about her reputation and sets a good example. I think young kids should be discouraged to looking up to any performers, celebrities, or athletes, but if I had a daughter, I'd be happy if she was a Taylor Swift fan.

Haha! I heard one of her new songs recently and was caught a little by surprise by some of the language! I get that she's older and can't stick with bubblegum pop forever, but I remember seeing an interview with her years ago, and she was very aware of her fan base and expressed a desire to at least try to be a good role model for them.

A few f-bombs don't bother me at all. But in an age where "female empowerment" has come to mean becoming an entrepreneur on Only Fans, I've got to give her props for not relying on hyper-sexualized context to be successful.

I'm not sure if it was already mentioned, but it should also be noted that she hasn't toured since Reputation - we're 4 original albums later plus 2 re-releases. There's a lot of pent up demand to see her live - coming from someone who's never seen her live, I had to accept q painful reality that I would be paying a ridiculous amount to finally see her.
