So funny story.

My old roommate and I are eating dinner and drinking beers at the bar at Maple & Motor (a burger joint near UTSouthwestern in Dallas) and the owner of the restaurant is on the other side on his computer talking with us. We'd been there for a solid 1.5 hours talking when he asks us randomly if we're LOTR fans. Totally unconnected. We said sure and he asks if we want to see a picture of an awesome tattoo. We said ok and he tells us to come behind the bar so other patrons can't see his computer screen and we do.

The tattoo was some pretty damn hot chick had tattooed the One Ring inscription around her back door.

I've never been so shocked in my life.

I might qualify as an uber-nerd to participate in this thread.

In high school for my Latin term project I translated the Battle of Pelennor Fields into Latin. I still have that paper somewhere which I actually typed out on an actual typewriter...

I've done the Weta tour in Wellington. Very cool with some incredible examples of movie armor and models and artwork.

And I drove all over NZ stopping at every LOTR filming site I could. The NZ road map that I bought actually had filming sites as marked attractions on the road map so that was cool.

And I hosted Sean Astin on a short visit to College Station. Got a picture of him in Rudder tower. Should have done the dou selfie thing but oh well.

I'm all in on this thread! LOTR is a great book and the trilogy was everything I hoped it would be and more.
Count myself and my 4 boys among the LOTR uber-nerds. We loved the books -- I read the Hobbit and the trilogy to them multiple times when they were young -- as well as the movies, and they had the opportunity to travel to NZ over the Christmas break. Here are some pics my youngest posted to Instagram (I think his account is private) with the caption: "A day may come when I'm back in Texas... but it is not this day."

I just did my rewatch of the LOTR and watched the hobbit trilogy for the first time. Idk why but every time at the end of RotK, tears just start falling. I swear, those movies are a cinematic metaphor for journey of life and all the obstacles we will face throughout. Not trying to be super emotional but damn those films can put you in your feels.

I wonder is the silmarillian will ever be filmed?

Never say never, but I think it's extremely unlikely the Tolkien estate ever gives permission to film the Silmarillion.

For one thing, it would be like 18 movies long.

Nah, you don't try to adapt the entire Silmarillion. There are a couple of ways you could do this:

Good: Adapt the Great Tales: Beren and Luthin, The Children of Hurin, & The Fall of Gondolin as standalone yet interconnected movies (Think Phase 1 MCU). Use flashbacks when necessary to provide backstory.

Better: Adapt those same stories on a streaming service, but use the stories and events of the earlier stories to help fill out those main stories with flashbacks and provide context.

Best: Start at some point in the Quenta Silmarillion after the Noldor have left Valinor, using multiple seasons to the story. I'd pick up the story sometime after men have entered Beleriand, using flashbacks to tell the story of why the Noldor are actually here fighting Morgoth. Go all the way to the voyage of Earendil and the War of Wrath.

What I wouldn't try to do is adapt the first two parts of the Silmarillion. I love the music of the Ainur, but I have no idea how you depict what is going on. Those would have to be extremely unique and stylized. I'm thinking the more esoteric bits of Fantasia.

Though if someone does try to adapt the Ainulindale, do it like this.

Edit: However it is done, I hope we see the epic rap battles of Sauron.

Best case scenario, and then I think it'd be cool if the studio in charge could do a separate "extra" (Think there was something done in GoT, where they got the actors to do explanations for the different houses of Westeros and stuff) similar to that comic. Use animation and CGI and narration and beautiful music to tell the story.

Fans will watch it and those who it doesn't appeal to can skip it and not really miss on any of the actual story.

I question the scale of that map. In the books Aragorn talks about going so far south in his hunt for Gollum that the stars look funny in the sky. I always took that as him going south of the equator.

How far south is Gondor? Or is "Middle Earth" a much smaller sphere?

Damn, I'm a nerd

He didn't go that far South in his hunt for Gollum.

Besides that, the conceit Tolkien uses is that these stories are from a lost mythological pre-history of our own Earth.

Nerd status: Revoked.

So when did he go that far south?

I guess that was just in his travels prior to LOTR?

Probably.

If I were to bet, it would be after he served in Gondor. I doubt Tolkien ever settled on when.

Will TexAgs add a Fantasy/Sci-Fi Nerd Map board if we petition?

I bet half the readers of this thread gave a huge sigh of contentment the first time they saw FOTR and Bilbo had the map out from his journey in The Hobbit.

My brother has an amazing hardback book full of maps of Westeros and Essos that he and I once spent about 90 minutes perusing without either one of us saying more than 50 words.

I don't know how to embed tweets: theonering.net is reporting that the show has been put on hiatus and the writers have been fired.

I'm currently taking this with a grain of salt because they have been wrong in nearly every scoop regarding the show.

If that's true they're the only ones talking about it. Hell, it looks like there was news of a new casting yesterday. I did see production is supposed to take a four to five month hiatus after they film the first two episodes to write the second season as they've already been renewed.

Yeah: The main LOTR on Prime subreddit is taking the news with a great deal of salt, particularly since we had an official casting announcement yesterday.

Besides that, the rights agreement also includes a fairly aggressive production schedule: they apparently have to release this show in 2021 or early 22 or lose the rights they spent $250 million to aquire.
