I am excited for this but the anime style feels so wrong.
I'm ok with the art style but the actual animation just seems off. Felt very rough and choppy to me. Also I don't think I can recall an animation I've seen where the voices and mouth movement being off distracted me but it sure did in this trailer.powerbelly said:

Hmmm... not really feeling it. And I'm the LotR fan who loves everything about Rohan and the Rohirrim.
Also, why are we getting another LotR girlboss story? We already got all the plot points with Eowyn. And her character and what she did was meant to be such an outlier, which is why it was a big deal.

ETA: Just rewatched to understand better. So our King is Helm Hammerhand, and we are focusing on his daughter for the story? Screw that mess. I want to focus on Helm Hammerhand and get his whole backstory.

For some reason I thought this was a show on Max. The fact that it's a theatrical movie makes the animation quality issues I'm seeing even more of an issue to me. It looks rougher than a ton of animated shows. It's going to have to be damn good as a story to make me want to pay to go see it in theaters.

It is a bit funny that the original premise was the story of Helm Hammerhand and the preview is all about his daughter.

Looks like something from a scifi anime...
Plus the boob belt and thigh high boots don't feel middle earth at all.
I also don't really like anime art styles. For something like a true feature-length animated LotR story to be released in theatres, I would have thought they had more money behind it to do something truly unique for LotR. Like how the Spiderverse movies created this amazing animation that is 100% theirs.

I don't mind the anime art style but some of these characters look like they were just copied and pasted out of another anime and don't feel like LOTR character designs at all (as others have said).
Looks like a Merida in Middle Earth story, for teenagers

I bought the Hobbit to read with my son but he's not too interested in it yet. Sonjve been reading it at bedtime while he's reading something else. I pulled up Thorin's Wikipedia tonight and realized that Gloin and Oin's dad is named Groin.

Rankin and Bass style as seen in The Hobbit and RoTK are awesome and nostalgic. The Ralph Bakshi LOTR is super near and dear to my heart as well even with the weird rotoscoping.
That being said, R/B RoTK is TERRIBLE. I found a stream online and couldn't stomach much of it. If not for the animation style I would not have made it past 15 minutes. The story is putrid.
