Gendry is a good example of how the show story is different than the book and I think that's fine. It may even be spoiling the book.
For instance, we know in the show that Gendry didn't know his mother and grew up an orphan. We also know that he is around the same age as Robb/Jon etc who were all conceived around the end of Robert's Rebellion. We also know that Cersei has a dialogue early in Season 1 where she talks with Catelyn about how her first child with Robert had "dark hair" and "he was taken away from me". The assumption of course is the child died but what if that child was actually Gendry? If that is the case then Gendry is not a ******* at all, he is the rightful heir.
It's a departure from the books but that's fine, as I said the show and books are getting farther and farther apart and are really two different stories now.
I also agree though that the relevance is iffy anyway because whomever wins will be King, not whomever has the rightful claim.
