Speak for yourself. I recently started reading book 1 and there is so much more detail (obviously) that could be added. Don't get me wrong its the show is fantastic when it comes to following book 1, but then again I like that kind of stuff. I enjoy 4 hour LOTR extended versions.

I found that reading the books after the respective season has aired is a great way to flesh out the story.

These past two seasons made it a little tricky since I had heard the third book wasn't going to be covered in one. I definitely started that one late to make sure I didn't get ahead of this season. Can't wait to read how the Red Wedding plays out in print.

I think a couple more episodes could be added each season, but as a book reader and show watcher, I think its a great balance.

i think people don't realize it is so much more than a typical network TV show...networks average 18-21 minutes of commercials per hour.

So 10 episodes without commercials is like 13+ episodes with commercials.

but i'd still take more if we could have it - but with an estimated budget of $50-$60 million per season already, 3 more episodes would jack that up to $65-$78 million. not sure they could justify it.

Quite different, you'll be surprised. The general gist is the same, but the show changed a LOT.

For example (and this isn't a spoiler as I remember discussing this in the Season 3 thread last year), there is no Talisa Maegyr of Volantis (Robb's wife in the show). Yeah. Pretty big difference! She was created for the show only.

There are loads of people canceling their subscriptions for 9 months....If that number is greater than 2 million, then hbo loses money.

The problem with this is that you don't know in what order the show runners are choosing to reveal the "History of Westeros". So just because something was revealed/explained in book 1 or 2 or 3, but hasn't happened in the show, DOES NOT mean that it won't eventually be brought back up in the show and turn out to be something of a spoiler for those who are relying on the show to live and breathe on its own instead of merely being a visual supplement to the books.

The "history" the poster before you mentioned was in reference to the histories on the first season's DVDs. I don't think the writers of the show are dumb enough to have "spoilers" on the DVDs themselves therefore they should be fair game.

I can easily think of enough material from each book to fill an extra 3 episodes per season. Some of it better show up eventually.

I'm actually surprised they don't do 12 episode seasons and release one per month. They could do that with 4 of their shows simultaneously to fill up a single time slot for the full year. That way people are incentivized to keep the subscription all year.

I had a few drinks last night and accidentally opened up the spoilers thread by mistake. I didn't read it for very long, but I think I did see something that I wish I hadn't.

Dr. - i think once a month airings would not keep people engaged enough.

They do try to roll from one show to the next like True Blood starts shortly after Game of Thrones ends so they always try to have one show in rotation.

I've never watched all of their shows but enough of them and I've never cancelled between seasons. There is enough great programming to keep me subscribed.

Been watching more or less since Dream On in 90's....

Sopranos, The Wire, Big Love, Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, true Detective

plus comedies - Curb your Enthusiasm, Larry Sanders Show, Sex and the City, Extras, Entourage, Veep and now Silicon Valley, etc.

plus docudrama miniseries like From The Earth to the Moon, John Adams, Band of Brothers, the Pacific

Looking forward to The Leftovers.

just so much quality TV. I can't imagine not having HBO...I hate network TV generally...the only broadcast network drama I've watched in the last 10+ years is LOST.

You're not alone brotha, I did the same damn thing! I hate myself so much for a) being an idiot and b) not reading the books fast enough... I punish myself by not posting predictions or theories on here.

I did the same thing in season one. Before I realized where I was, the SINGLE post I read said that both Drogo and Ned were going to die........ I was pissed at myself. I'm extra careful since then.

Is it wrong that I actually enjoyed John from Cincinnati? By the end of the season I was very confused but definitely intrigued and interested in everything that was going on.

I wonder if it just aired five years too soon.

Just because that guy asked, I removed the harmless but interesting book details from the episode summaries that I post each week. I don't think it's asking too much to restrict the discussion in this thread to what has happened on the show and stop posting "guesses" that are obviously NOT just from one's imagination. But, I guess some people just need the attention they didn't get from their momma. ******bags.

Just to make things MORE confusing they have actually changed things in the show histories as well. I started as an obsessed watcher and turned reader and there was one person that was listed in the family tree of one of the Houses on the HBO site that then disappeared in Season 2. That person is just a minor character in the books.

They have made adjustments to the show as they have gone along. There is another character in Season 2 that is in the Show briefly but then just kind of disappears but she is still in the books. Much of it has to do with the show staying away from the prophecies and flashbacks or backstory, they started to have more of it early on but have minimized it likely because they thought it was too confusing.

So yes, you can actually "spoil" the show by reading some of the source material from previous seasons as they are adjusting the show story slightly as they go along from what the show creators planned. Rarely is any of it significant enough to change the story really but it still is different.

Same and Gilly dont climb the wall or use the tunnel at Castle black.

It is not being defended.

Why dont the wildlings use that tunnel? Did I miss something?

Wonder if Ned's brother ever comes back. Is he presumed dead? Er, cousin. I think. No it is brother.

I'd have to go back and watch but I thought they went through a "secret" tunnel at an abandoned night's watch castle. That's where they met Bran and his friends.

From the show wiki

quote:
At last, they make it to the wall and stay overnight in the Nightfort, an abandoned castle on the Wall that is rumored to be haunted. During the night, Jon Snow's fellow Night's Watch comrade Samwell Tarly, with Gilly and her child, emerge from a secret passageway. Samwell, noticing the gigantic Hodor and Summer, realizes who Bran is and offers to take them to Castle Black, but Jojen tells Sam that they are going beyond the Wall, as no force in the realm of Westeros could withstand the threat posed by the White Walkers. Sam reluctantly shows them the secret sally port and gives them the obsidian blades found North of the Wall, which he earlier used to slay a White Walker. That night, Bran, the Reeds, Hodor and Summer finally pass beyond the Wall.[25]
